Current squad can match 1999 treble success says Ryan Giggs

Manchester United's veteran winger Ryan Giggs believes the current squad at Old Trafford could match the success the treble winning team of 1999 achieved at some stage under new manager David Moyes.

It's a bold statement and one many may disagree with but Manchester United's veteran winger Ryan Giggs believes the current squad could match the success achieved by the treble winning side of 1999.

Giggs, 38, was a part of that treble winning side under Sir Alex Ferguson and feels the quality within the United playing ranks in 2012 is comparable to that of the 1999 side that swept all before them.

"Any squad that's successful at Old Trafford since 1999 has been compared to the treble winning side, it's natural I guess and in terms of achievements no team has matched that one yet, which I guess isn't that surprising because it's very rare and you need a little bit of luck along the way," said the 38 year old.

"In saying that I think if any squad had a real chance of matching the treble winning side of 1999 it's the current squad. We've a very strong defence, an exciting midfield with pace, flair and it's also quite youthful whilst our strikers all possess unbelievable qualities just like the four we had in 1999," added Giggs.

The winger has been at Old Trafford his entire career and has made 638 Premier League appearances scoring 111 times. Giggs, who has won 12 Premier League titles in his career, has a year remaining on his contract and will make no decision regarding his future in football until the latter stages of the season.

Giggs scored 12 times in 64 appearances for Wales in an international career spanning almost 16 years.

David Moyes confident of success at Old Trafford

David Moyes is confident he can succeed at Old Trafford with his first Premier League game as Manchester United manager just just five days away, the Scot excited that his first game in charge will be at Old Trafford.

Manchester United will head into the Manchester derby against fierce rivals and Premier League champions Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday full of confidence after a very successful pre-season under new manager David Moyes in which they won all five of their games, scoring 11 goals and conceding none.

Moyes, 49, was handed a six year contract when he was named as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor last month.

The former Everton boss says a winning start against City is important but believes regardless of the result at Old Trafford on Sunday the Premier League title will be decided at various crossroads during the season.

"When we play City this weekend it's important to start the season with a good performance and result, the fans won't want to lose against our fiercest rivals two years on the trot at Old Trafford, so we've been talking about that and educating the players on the importance of this game throughout pre-season," said Moyes.

"Personally I'd like to start with a win, but the Premier League title won't be lost on Sunday if we don't pick up the three points. The Premier League season is a very long, hard and unforgiving journey, there will be a lot of tricky crossroads for us to navigate and it's during those tricky periods that a title can be won and lost, so we've got to prepare as best as possible for those moments," added the new Manchester United manager.

When asked if he believed he could succeed at Old Trafford the Scot was confident in his ability.

"Definitely, the facilities and setup make it difficult not to succeed," said Moyes with a smirk.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says he doesn't mind playing in midfield and is prepared to do so this season if asked to by new manager David Moyes, although he stressed that he'd need time to adapt.

With the arrival of Robin van Persie at Old Trafford many expect striker Wayne Rooney to play a deeper role in the midfield and the England international has for the first time spoken about the possibility of converting into a midfielder, the 26 year old revealing he'd be happy to play in midfield if asked to do so.

"Playing in midfield would be a good challenge and if it helps the team then I'm not against it," said Rooney.

"I think it would take time for me to adapt to the role, to figure out when it's best to attack and when it's best to defend, but after awhile I think I'd settle into it. It isn't about Wayne Rooney or Robin van Persie, it's about what's best for the club and if I'm asked to play there I will gladly do it," added the 26 year old striker.

Rooney is expected to start in midfield against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday in what will be David Moyes first Premier League game in charge of Manchester United since his appointment last month.

Rio Ferdinand has urged his Manchester United team-mates to do all they can to begin the new Premier League season with victory over fierce rivals Manchester City when they meet at Old Trafford tomorrow afternoon.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand wants to start the new Premier League season tomorrow afternoon with victory over fierce rivals and champions Manchester City. The 33 year old has taken to twitter calling on his team-mates to deliver a victory at Old Trafford for the fans and new manager David Moyes.

Ferdinand tweeted late last night saying: "Want to deliver a win for the new boss and the fans against City tomorrow, let's do it boys. It'll be a tough game, but we can beat them."

"Losing the title to City hurt and it's now time to go get our trophy back. Time for another hard season, it'll be a lot of fun, can't wait," read another post on the players official twitter account.

City thumped United 6-1 last season at Old Trafford and a goal from captain Vincent Kompany at the Etihad Stadium gave the citizens a vital 1-0 win over the Red Devils to swing the title race in their favour. United led City by eight points with just five games to go but defeat against Wigan Athletic, a draw against Everton and defeat at the Etihad allowed Roberto Mancini's side to take control of the Premier League title race again and they won it on the final day of the season when Sergio Agüero scored an injury time winner against QPR.

Manchester City began the defence of their Premier League title in the best possible fashion as they spoilt David Moyes first game in charge of Manchester United by beating their fierce rivals who had Wayne Rooney sent off.

The new era at Manchester United under David Moyes has begun with defeat at the hands of fierce rivals and Premier League champions Manchester City after Vincent Kompany scored the winner for the second consecutive meeting between the two clubs, the Belgians goal enough to give the citizens victory over United who had been reduced to ten men just before half time following Wayne Rooney's dismissal.

As expected Moyes named Rooney in a midfield role as he employed a five man midfield in his first Premier League game as United boss and United started well in the opening exchanges, Rooney finding Antonio Valencia in some space, the Ecuadorian international firing wide of post as Joe Hart looked beaten.

City responded quickly though and Sergio Agüero was unlucky to see his long range effort smash into David De Gea's crossbar before Rio Ferdinand cleared the loose ball away for a corner just as Edin Džeko looked set to tap home from about nine yards out. It mattered little however as Džeko did break the deadlock moments later following David Silva's corner, a poor back pass from Rooney gifting the City striker with a one on one opportunity and Džeko made no mistake as he calmly slotted the ball beyond De Gea.

The reigning Premier League champions weren't ahead for long however, two minutes to be exact, as Ferdinand rose highest to powerfully head a corner from Robin van Persie beyond Hart.

Unfortunately for Moyes his side couldn't push on after equalising and they were soon behind again as Kompany prodded home unmarked inside the United penalty area after De Gea couldn't hold a powerful drive from Agüero who was causing Nemanja Vidić and Ferdinand all sorts of nightmares.

The home supporters cried for a penalty on the half hour mark as Yaya Touré sent Rooney tumbling inside the City penalty area, although they were disappointed to see no penalty awarded and Rooney booked for simulation by referee Jon Moss. That booking would prove very important as Rooney would see red just before the half time break for a cynical foul on Yaya Touré, a second yellow card followed by the mandatory red, the striker sent off with his team behind in the Manchester derby.

After the half time break the home side looked likely to draw level as Nani, Ferdinand and Anderson all went close, however City eventually settled and managed to dictate the tempo for large parts of the second half at Old Trafford. Just past the hour mark United manager David Moyes put Ryan Giggs and Tom Cleverley on in an attempt to change things but neither was able to make a difference and the citizens held on to record their third consecutive Premier League victory over their fiercest rivals.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has apologised to his team-mates, manager and fans following his first half dismissal in the Manchester derby against Manchester City yesterday at Old Trafford.

A booking for simulation and a booking for a cynical foul on Yaya Touré led to Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney being dismissed in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford yesterday, referee Jon Moss left with little alternative, the 26 year old striker given his marching orders just before the half time interval

In the end United lost the game 2-1 as Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany scored the winner.

A statement on the official Manchester United website that was released an hour ago saw the striker apologise for the dismissal, the England international expressing his disappointment at being shown a red card in the Manchester derby and the fact he'll miss the trip to Loftus Road to face QPR on Saturday.

The statement read: "Manchester United players are reminded that they're expected to maintain high standards of discipline both on and off the pitch. Following the dismissal of Wayne Rooney in the Manchester derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford yesterday the club have taken the chance to remind the playing staff of this expectation. We've also discussed this privately with Wayne Rooney and the player has expressed his regret at the incident, accepted responsibility, apologised and voiced his disappointment that he'll now be suspended for the Premier League clash against QPR this Saturday at Loftus Road."

Rooney was directly responsible for the citizens opener, his woeful back pass gifting Edin Džeko the chance to open the scoring after just five minutes and the Bosnia and Herzegovina international made no mistake.

Manchester derby defeat hard to take says Rafael

Manchester United defender Rafael says losing the Manchester derby against fierce rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford is hard to take and believes it's the worst game the Red Devils can lose during the season.

A defeat in the Manchester derby is the worst game that Manchester United can lose according to right back Rafael. The Brazilian international told BBC Sport it was very hard to digest the 2-1 defeat against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday and believes QPR could feel the backlash on Saturday at Loftus Road.

"Losing the Manchester derby hurts and it's never a good game to lose. If there is any game you don't want to lose that's the game, it hurts a lot and I really feel for the fans. Hopefully we can put it behind us and bounce back quickly, that'll be important for us to focus on the next game and not let one bad result effect other results. We'll work hard during the week and prepare as best as we can for the QPR game," stated Rafael.

"If I was a QPR player I'd be nervous about what could happen on Saturday, I'd fear the backlash because Manchester United tend to bounce back in fine fashion following big disappointments," added the defender.

The 22 year old has been at Old Trafford since January 2008 and has made 53 Premier League appearances in that time, he is expected to be the first choice right back under new United manager David Moyes.

Carrick urges team-mates to bounce back against QPR

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has urged his Old Trafford team-mates to forget about their disappointing 2-1 defeat against Manchester City last Sunday ahead of their clash with QPR at Loftus Road.

England international Michael Carrick has urged his team-mates to put their disappointing 2-1 defeat in last weekends Manchester derby behind them as they prepare for their upcoming Premier League clash with QPR.

"It was disappointing to lose the first game of the season, the first game under David Moyes and with it being the derby against City it was even more upsetting. I felt things just didn't go our way, I mean we had Wayne sent off and conceded two goals we probably wouldn't usually," said the England international.

"City are a fantastic team, that's why they're the current Premier League champions and we didn't play at our best. That's all in the past now though and we need to focus on the game against QPR, we need to be ready for that and prepare as well as we possibly can, because they'll be up for the game," added Carrick.

United beat QPR 2-0 in both Premier League games last season and you would have to go back to January 1992 to find the last time the Red Devils suffered defeat against QPR, losing 4-1 at Old Trafford that day.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has heaped praise on Robin van Persie after the Dutch striker scored a match winning first half brace against QPR yesterday at Loftus Road.

QPR will go 21 years without beating Manchester United after a Robin van Persie brace at Loftus Road sealed a vital 2-0 win for the Red Devils who registered their first Premier League win under new boss David Moyes.

The Dutch striker, who joined the Old Trafford club from rivals Arsenal in the summer for £24 million, netted on the half hour mark and then five minutes before the half time interval and his manager was full of praise when interviewed earlier today, Moyes labelling van Persie's performance as fantastic and world class.

"The victory yesterday was important and the lads all knew that," said Moyes at the interview started.

"Robin was fantastic yesterday, the best player on the pitch and he took his two goals very well. He's a world class player and he put in a world class performance yesterday against QPR, he was the difference, our match winner. It's great as a manager when you've got players like him in your squad, it makes everything much easier, it's been a pleasure so far and it's only going to get better," added the United boss.

United beat QPR without the suspended Wayne Rooney who was serving a mandatory one match ban following his dismissal against Manchester City on the opening day of the Premier League season.

The England international will be available for United's next Premier League game against Swansea City but is likely to start on the bench according to reports, although Moyes denied that a decision had been made.
