Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has announced his immediate retirement from football following 25 years at Old Trafford which seen the Red Devils win 37 trophies which included 12 Premier League titles.

Sir Alex Ferguson has called time on his glittering career at Old Trafford today by announcing his retirement.

The Scot, 70, has been at Old Trafford for more than 25 years and in that time has won an astonishing 37 trophies. That haul included 12 Premier League titles, two UEFA Champions League crowns and five FA Cups.

Ferguson leaves as the most successful manager in the history of British football and famously won the treble in 1999 as his Manchester United side won the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League, the last of which was won in dramatic fashion against Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp courtesy of two stoppage time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

It's believed Ferguson decided to step down after his side narrowly missed out on their 20th Premier League title on goal difference on the final day of last season as Sergio Agüero scored an injury time winner against QPR at the Etihad Stadium to secure Manchester City's first league title in 44 years.

Sources inside the club indicated that a successor to Ferguson will be appointed within two weeks.

The early favourites to take over from Ferguson are José Mourinho and David Moyes.

Haven't quite decided, might not have the time to do the SAF challenge as it'll take a long time to complete.

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson following the announcement that the legendary Manchester United manager is retiring with immediate effect.

Arsène Wenger has thanked Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson for his services to football.

The Manchester United boss has decided to retire with immediate effect. The 70 year old brings to an end an association at Old Trafford that has lasted for over 25 years and has brought with it 12 Premier League titles.

The pair were bitter rivals when the Gunners were directly challenging United for the Premier League crown, although tensions have decreased in recent years as Arsenal have struggled to challenge at the very top.

"Sir Alex Ferguson was one of a kind and nobody will ever achieve what he's achieved," said Wenger.

"Throughout our rivalry I've always maintained a great deal of respect for Sir Alex and have learned a lot from my encounters with him. His passion, hardworking nature, will to win and unrelenting pursuit of success is admirable. Nobody could ever have imagined when he took over that he would make Manchester United one of the biggest clubs in the world and football won't be the same without him," added the Arsenal manager.

Wenger, 62, is now the longest serving manager in British football after Ferguson's retirement.

He has been at Arsenal since September 1996.

PSG superstar David Beckham has labelled Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson as the greatest manager in the history of football following the Scots announcement that he's retiring.

Retiring Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been labelled as the greatest manager in the history of football by former United midfielder David Beckham. The midfielder made 394 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United and picked up six Premier League titles under Ferguson.

"Sir Alex Ferguson is the greatest manager football has ever seen and his achievements speak for themselves. Not only was he a great manager but he was also a great person," said Beckham.

"He is responsible for my career, he was a father figure for me from the very first day I came to the club and everything I've achieved in football is directly linked to Sir Alex. I can never repay what he's done for me and I hope he knows that," added the 37 year old.

The former England captain came through the youth system at Manchester United alongside the likes of Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt. He was an integral part of the United side that won the famous treble in 1999 and took both the corners in stoppage time at the Nou Camp that led to goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær against Bayern Munich.

Beckham, 37, now plays in Ligue 1 for PSG after signing a one year deal with the French club.

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidić says retiring manager Sir Alex Ferguson was and always will be the best manager football has ever seen following the Scots shock decision to retire last week.

Manchester United players and fans are still in shock after manager Sir Alex Ferguson announced his intention to retire with immediate effect from his role. Tributes have been pouring in from various people for the Scot with the likes of Arsène Wenger and David Beckham praising the 70 year olds achievements.

United captain Nemanja Vidić has now joined that list after he called the Scot the best manager in football.

"Sir Alex Ferguson has achieved so much in football and it's disappointing that he's retiring," stated Vidić.

"However the club is left in a tremendous position due to the managers ability and we'll continue to win trophies as expected thanks to the managers tremendous planning. I've never seen a manager like him in all my years playing football and am convinced he's one of a kind," added the former Serbian international.

"His work ethic and passion has turned Manchester United into the biggest club in the world. There have been challenges from different teams during my time here and even when we bad moments the manager always kept us motivated to bounce back, something this club has done time and time again."

"For me he's the best manager football has ever seen and that'll never change," said Vidić.

Vidić, 30, joined Manchester United back in January 2006 from Russian side Spartak Moscow for a fee worth around £7 million and has gone on to become one of the worlds best centre backs under Ferguson's guidance.

Initially the Serbian international took time to settle in England but he has become a key member of the defence at Old Trafford, striking up a formidable partnership with Rio Ferdinand at the centre of the United defence. Vidić has won four Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League crown, one FIFA Club World Cup, three Capital One Cups and four FA Community Shields at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.

He was capped 56 times by Serbia and retired from international football back in October 2011.

Vidić has two years remaining on his £90,000 a week contract at Old Trafford.

David Moyes favourite to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson

Everton manager David Moyes, not José Mourinho, is currently the favourite to replace retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson according to a source inside the Old Trafford club.

If various tabloid newspapers are to be believed then Manchester United will soon appoint Everton manager David Moyes as the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson after the 70 year old announced his retirement last week.

The 49 year old is in the final year of his contract at Goodison Park and is reportedly keen to take on the challenge of replacing Ferguson who is the most successful manager in British football.

Real Madrid boss José Mourinho was the early favourite to be named the new Manchester United manager but a source from inside Old Trafford said the former Chelsea manager didn't appeal to the Glazer owners as much as Moyes who they believe is more likely to respect the clubs history, culture and youth policy.

"Manchester United will confirm their new manager soon and it won't be José Mourinho," said the source.

"David Moyes is the favourite, he's the guy they want and the deal will get done unless for some reason he decides he doesn't want to manage Manchester United. The owners don't think Mourinho will respect the history of the club and that's very important to them, so really from the day Sir Alex Ferguson said he was retiring it's never been likely he'd be appointed, I don't think he's even been approached," added the source.

Moyes was appointed Everton boss back in March 2002 and has been praised for keeping the club in the top half of the Premier League, often challenging for European football, whilst spending little in comparison with other clubs. Should the 49 year old Scot leave Goodison Park for Old Trafford it's expected that Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright will look to appoint Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martínez.

José Mourinho has ignored numerous questions linking him with a possible move to Manchester United following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement and says he's only concentrating on footballing matters at Real Madrid.

Many believe that only José Mourinho has what it takes to replace legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson after he choose to retire and given Mourinho's success in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain it's hard to argue that the former FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and current Real Madrid manager wouldn't be a perfect fit for the Old Trafford dugout, especially given the shadow Ferguson will leave behind.

Mourinho, 49, has won league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain, whilst two UEFA Champions League triumphs have accompanied those league titles, his most recent coming at Inter Milan when the Nerazzurri completed a treble, his ability to win silverware arguably as good as Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Real Madrid manager constantly avoided questions today at a press conference about his future, Mourinho simply stating that he was concentrating only on footballing matters at the Bernabéu.

Rumours in the media on Wednesday from a source within Manchester United revealed that the board haven't thought about approaching the Real Madrid manager due to fears he wouldn't respect the clubs history, culture and youth policy. According to the same source Everton manager David Moyes is the favourite to succeed Ferguson and could be appointed within days should a deal be reached.

Some have argued however that Moyes hasn't won any silverware whilst at Goodison Park and may struggle under the pressure at Old Trafford. He has however consistently kept Everton in the top half of the Premier League, often challenging for European football, whilst spending little in comparison with other clubs.

Manchester United have confirmed on their official website that they have reached an agreement with Everton and personal terms with David Moyes to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as manager at Old Trafford.

David Moyes, 49, has been named as the new Manchester United manager, succeeding the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson after the Old Trafford club reached an agreement with Everton and personal terms with Moyes.

The 49 year old becomes the 19th manager since the beginning of the club's official managerial records which began in 1892. He has signed a six year contract and will take over at Old Trafford immediately.

Moyes will take charge of his first game as Manchester United boss in just four days when United host a friendly against German giants Bayern Munich at Old Trafford. United will then head to the USA for a planned training camp before playing Belgian side Royal Antwerp FC in Antwerp.

The Red Devils will then wrap up their pre-season commitments in China with a three match tour in which they'll face Guangzhou Evergrande, Guizhou Renhe and Henan Construction.

Moyes will take charge of his first competitive fixture as Manchester United boss on the opening day of the Premier League season when they face current champions and fierce rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes the appointment of David Moyes to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as manager is the right one and will bring with it continuity which will help the club remain successful.

Gary Neville believes the Manchester United board have got it right in appointing Everton manager David Moyes as the successor to the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson. The 49 year old Scot was named yesterday as the new Manchester United manager and Neville believes the appointment of Moyes offers continuity.

"I think with David Moyes he's quite similar to Sir Alex Ferguson, he wants his team to work hard, show character, understand the history of the club and connect with the people they're representing each time they play football. Everton are quite family friendly, just like Manchester United," said Neville.

"Personally I think it's a great appointment, the right appointment and it offers long term continuity. I think with David Moyes you've a manager who could potentially stay at Old Trafford for the rest of his career, he'll respect the history of the club and he's shown at Everton he's more than happy to give younger players the chance if he believes they're ready," added the former England international.

Neville, 37, who now works as a football pundit for Sky Sports made 602 appearances for Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson. In his time at Old Trafford the right back won numerous trophies which included eight Premier League titles, two UEFA Champions League crowns, three FA Cups and two Capital One Cups.

The 37 year old was capped on 85 occasions by England during his successful career.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand says he's disappointed to see Sir Alex Ferguson retire but has revealed he's also excited about the new era that's to come under new manager David Moyes.

The appointment of David Moyes as the new Manchester United manager and successor to Sir Alex Ferguson has ushered in a quicker than expected new era at Old Trafford. Nobody knew that United's longest serving manager was contemplating retirement and when the announcement was made it was shocking for many.

The end of one era will see the beginning of another and defender Rio Ferdinand says he's excited about the future under Moyes who was handed a six year contract on Tuesday by the Manchester United board.

"All good things come to an end I guess, but it's still a sad time for the club and disappointing that Sir Alex is retiring. For a lot of United fans he's the only manager they've known, that's unheard of in football really and it'll probably never happen again. What he's achieved in the game is unbelievable and it's very unlikely that anybody else will match that, it's truly remarkable," said the defender.

"In saying that with the end of one era another begins and it's going to be very exciting to work with David Moyes. He's done a terrific job at Everton and he deserves this chance. The best thing about this is that the club has sorted it out very quickly, it hasn't dragged on and become a media circus," added Ferdinand.

Ferdinand joined Manchester United back in 2002 from rivals Leeds United in a deal worth £29 million.

The 33 year old has gone on to become a key member of the defence making 270 Premier League appearances for United and has developed a formidable centre back partnership with Nemanja Vidić.

Ferdinand currently has one year remaining on his £110,000 a week contract at Old Trafford.

It has been revealed that former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson recommended his eventual successor David Moyes to the Old Trafford owners after notifying them of his decision to retire a fortnight ago.

The Manchester United hierarchy asked Sir Alex Ferguson who he would appoint as his successor at Old Trafford if the decision was his to make and then appointed the man recommended according to reports.

Everton manager David Moyes was appointed as the new Manchester United boss three days ago after Ferguson's recommendation and the 49 year old has been handed a six year contract at Old Trafford.

He consistently kept Everton in the top half of the Premier League, often challenging for European football, whilst spending little in comparison with other clubs and becomes just the 19th manager at Old Trafford.

Moyes will take charge of his first competitive fixture as Manchester United boss on the opening day of the Premier League season when they face current champions and fierce rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Tom Cleverley scored the only goal at Old Trafford yesterday as new Manchester United manager David Moyes tasted success against FC Bayern Munich in his first game in charge since his appointment.

Cleverley, 22, scored the only goal of the pre-season clash against FC Bayern Munich at Old Trafford three minutes before the half time break as he headed home a free kick from Robin Van Persie.

United put in a dominant display against their German opponents in front of 71,989 fans at Old Trafford and the manner of victory would have pleased new manager David Moyes who took charge for the first time since his appointment following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

FC Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes didn't enjoy the pre-season friendly as Croatian international Mario Mandžukić received a straight red card just 11 minutes in after elbowing Michael Carrick in the face.

Cleverley was happy to have found himself on the scoresheet and hoped he could impress his new manager.

"It was a good game yesterday and the players will feel much better after that tough game against FC Bayern Munich. Thankfully we've no injury concerns and we've won the game so everybody is happy," said Cleverley.

"Personally it was fantastic to score against such a big team at home in front of our fans and hopefully I can perform well during the remaining pre-season fixtures. At the moment I just want to continue working hard and hopefully I'll catch the managers eye by doing that everyday in training," added the midfielder.

The 22 year old has three years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford and has made 10 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils, the former academy player breaking into the first team setup last season following a successful loan spell with fellow Premier League side Wigan Athletic during the 2010-2011 season.

Manchester United manager David Moyes will have a fight on his hands to stop Portuguese winger Nani joining La Liga champions Real Madrid in a £30 million deal this summer according to Spanish newspaper Marca.

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has reportedly been given permission to make Manchester United winger Nani his latest signing according to Spanish newspaper Marca.

Marca are reporting that the 25 year old winger will cost the La Liga champions £30 million.

Nani, who has made 125 Premier League appearances for United since leaving Sporting Lisbon in 2007 for £17 million, has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford and his agent has been in negotiations all summer with the board at Old Trafford in attempts of getting the Portuguese international an improved deal.

Reports throughout England indicate that new United boss David Moyes will be reluctant to let Nani leave.

PSG manager Carlo Ancelotti is looking to lure Manchester United and Brazilian midfielder Anderson away from Old Trafford in a deal worth £15 million according to reports in France and Italy.

Real Madrid want Nani and now PSG want Anderson, new Manchester United boss David Moyes seemingly facing a tough battle to keep his squad at Old Trafford together following his recent appointment.

Anderson, 24, who has made eight appearances for Brazil since his debut for the A Seleção against Mexico back in 2007, is reportedly the main transfer target of PSG manager Carlo Ancelotti.

The midfielder joined the Old Trafford club back in 2007 in a deal worth £12 million when he left Portuguese side FC Porto. He has unfortunately struggled in recent times to establish himself in the United midfield and was injured for most of 2010 after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

Anderson has made 83 Premier League appearances for United scoring just four times.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has informed both Nani and Anderson that they'll be staying at Old Trafford this season despite speculation linking them with transfers to Real Madrid and PSG respectively.

Manchester United duo Nani and Anderson won't be leaving Old Trafford this season according to manager David Moyes after speculation surfaced linking the pair with moves to Real Madrid and PSG respectively.

Moyes, 50, has been the manager at Old Trafford for 10 days following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson and it appears some of Europe's biggest clubs are prepared to test the Scot during the transfer window.

However the former Preston North End and Everton manager has adamantly declared today at a press conference that the pair will remain at Old Trafford this season regardless of interest from abroad.

"I'm aware some big clubs have been linked with Nani and Anderson. I've seen the reports on the internet and wasn't that surprised because they're both very good players," said the Manchester United manager.

"I've told both of them that they won't be leaving the club. We don't want to lose good players and we want to keep the current playing group together, I mean they lost the Premier League title by goal difference last season. They have the quality to win trophies so I won't be breaking a group like that up," added Moyes.

The 49 year old signed a six year contract when he joined Manchester United.

Moyes will take charge of his first competitive fixture as Manchester United boss on the opening day of the Premier League season when they face current champions and fierce rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Manchester United striker Javier Hernández says he's looking forward to training and playing alongside Dutch striker Robin van Persie who joined the Old Trafford club from Arsenal during the summer.

The arrival of Robin van Persie at Old Trafford from Arsenal for £24 million during the summer has excited Red Devil fans all over the world and even players at the club who may see their first team action limited.

Mexican international Javier Hernández is excited about the arrival of his new team-mate and says he hopes he'll learn a lot from the Dutch international who has scored 29 times for his country in 68 appearances.

"Robin is the type of player everybody wants to play with and I'm delighted he's joined Manchester United. He's a fantastic finisher and very experienced, I hope I can learn a lot from him and improve," said Chicharito.

"I know I may not play as often now because Robin is more experienced than me and that's okay, football is a team game and at Manchester United we play lots of games, I'll get my chance and hopefully then I can push to play more games. I'm excited about the season and hope we can be successful," added the 24 year old.

Chicharito recently signed a new contract at Old Trafford that expires in June 2016. The 24 year old has made 55 Premier League appearances scoring 23 times since completing a £7 million move from Chivas.

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidić says the players at Old Trafford know that wrestling the Premier League title off fierce rivals Manchester City is the main priority this season after last years final day heartbreak.

The Premier League title is the piece of silverware everybody at Old Trafford is after this season according to Manchester United skipper Nemanja Vidić. The 30 year old missed a large part of last season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament against FC Basel in a UEFA Champions League clash at St. Jakob-Park.

"We all know how much the Premier League title means to the clubs fans and as players it's what we strive to win every season. Losing the title last season was very disappointing and we hope we can put that behind us by winning the league this season, that's our main goal and everybody wants to win it," said Vidić.

"It'll be tough because the Premier League is the hardest league in the world, but we believe in each other and believe we've the right players to pick up the necessary points to beat off any challengers. We only have ourselves to blame for what happened last season and we'll strive to put things right this time around. As captain of this great club I'll do everything I can to make it happen," added the former Serbian international.

The fearless centre back currently has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford.

Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia says he's confident the Old Trafford club will win the Premier League title this season following last seasons heartbreaking last day disappointment at the Stadium of Light.

When Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero scored deep into injury time against QPR at the Etihad Stadium on the last day of the Premier League season he ripped the Premier League title out of the hands of the Manchester United players who had beaten Sunderland 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Antonio Valencia played the full game against the Black Cats that day and remembers the sadness he felt when the news filtered through that they had lost the Premier League title by virtue of goal difference.

"I've never felt pain like that in football, it was unbelievable, it'll never happen again," says Valencia.

"We've all had the summer to reflect on what happened and deal with it in our own way. Now it's time to make it right and by winning the Premier League we'll be able to forget about last season. Personally I believe we'll win the league title this year, we've got the right players in the summer to strengthen in the areas needed and we'll be much harder to beat this season," said the 26 year old winger.

Valencia has been at Old Trafford since 2009 when Sir Alex Ferguson paid Wigan Athletic almost £17 million to secure the Ecuadorian's services. The winger has made 71 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils scoring 10 times during his time at Old Trafford and has a contract that runs until 2015.

Pre-season results encouraging says Michael Carrick

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick says he's been pleased by his form and the teams form so far during pre-season after they beat Guangzhou Evergrande 2-0 yesterday at Tianhe Stadium.

Three wins from three pre-season fixtures has Manchester United's Michael Carrick in a buoyant mood.

The midfielder has played in all three of the Old Trafford clubs pre-season games against FC Bayern Munich, Royal Antwerp FC and Guangzhou Evergrande. Carrick, 31, is encouraged by the performances and results during the pre-season games ahead of the new Premier League season under new manager David Moyes.

"Everybody has missed Sir Alex Ferguson being around and involved and it's different having a new manager. In saying that David Moyes has been fantastic. The pre-season results have been really encouraging so far and it looks like we'll be ready to go for the new Premier League season," said the England international.

"Obviously losing the Premier League on the last day of the season in injury time on goal difference is hard to take and believe me a lot of the lads, myself included, couldn't sleep properly for a few days afterwards. This season is the perfect opportunity to bounce straight back and winning the Premier League again is the most important thing, so a good pre-season will be the best start possible," added Carrick.

Carrick has been at United since 2006 when he left Tottenham Hotspur for a transfer fee of £14 million and the midfielder who has two years remaining on his current contract hopes to finish his career at Old Trafford.

"Hopefully I can earn a new contract this season or next season. I'd love to finish my career at Manchester United, it's the only club I want to play for and I couldn't see myself playing anywhere else. Playing for a club like United was a dream come true, one I don't want to stop anytime soon," said the midfielder.

"I'd like to win a few more trophies before I do hang up my boots and I think there is a good chance that'll happen in the next two years at least. As I said I'm hoping to play on for a few more years, the likes of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are guys you look at and think I'd like to do that if my body holds up to the rigours of Premier League football. So all I can do is try play well and show the club I'm still useful," added Carrick.

The 31 year old has made 180 Premier League appearances for Manchester United scoring 14 times.

Chris Smalling happy with David Moyes appointment

http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x328/caoimhin89/Manchester is RED/1_zpse998a371.png

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling believes the board made the right decision appointing former Everton manager David Moyes as the successor to the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson last month.

Chris Smalling has had a meteoric rise from non-league football to playing for Fulham, Manchester United, making his senior debut for England and winning a Premier League title.

The 22 year old defender joined the Old Trafford club back in 2010 costing Sir Alex Ferguson £7 million when he departed Craven Cottage after just 13 Premier League appearances for Fulham.

The decision to sign Smalling so quickly has proved a smart one and the defender has impressed many in the 35 Premier League appearances he has made for Manchester United. Both he and Phil Jones are seen as the future centre back partnership for not only Manchester United but also England.

Now the 22 year old has backed new manager David Moyes to succeed at Old Trafford, the defender praising the board for the appointment of the former Everton manager following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I've no doubt David Moyes is the right choice for the club, the board did the right thing," says Smalling.

"Anybody replacing the boss would have had a tough time, I mean he's an absolute legend and the greatest manager football has ever seen, his record speaks for itself and he's won everything there is to win. The board did the right thing though in my opinion and it was great to see them go for a proven Premier League manager who has earned his chance at a big club like Manchester United," added the 22 year old.

"The long contract they gave David Moyes says they're looking at the long term rather than the next two to three years. This club is so good because of all that consistency, the history and doing the right thing. It's terrible to see managers sacked after six months, because you need time to get things working the way you want. It isn't good for the game and thankfully the board think the same," said the England international.

David Moyes signed a six year contract when he was named as the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson and will take charge of his first competitive fixture as Manchester United boss on the opening day of the Premier League season when they face current champions and fierce rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Patrice Evra hungry for more Premier League success

Manchester United defender Patrice Evra says he's hungry for more Premier League success and has warned teams to expect no mercy as the Red Devils look to put last seasons dramatic final day pain behind them.

The trophy cabinet at Old Trafford doesn't go very long without a new addition and French international Patrice Evra is hungry for more Premier League success as the new Premier League season draws closer.

"The Premier League trophy is the most important trophy for Manchester United, that's not being disrespectful to the FA Cup, Capital One Cup or even the UEFA Champions League," said Evra.

"That's the truth, that's the trophy the staff, players and fans want every year, that's what we strive for everyday in training and every time we go onto the football pitch. Sir Alex Ferguson craved Premier League success and he instilled that in all the players at this club, we think about it all the time and after losing on the last day of the season in May we're hungrier than ever before, I'm hungry for more Premier League success and will give my all to make it happen," added the French international.

Evra, 31, has been at Old Trafford for over six years now and has been a key member of the Manchester United defence since his £5 million move from French side AS Monaco in January 2006.

In that time the left back has made 206 Premier League appearances for the club and has won four Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, a FIFA Club World Championship and three Capital One Cups.

City challenge good for Manchester United says Rooney

Wayne Rooney believes the recent emergence of Manchester City as a Premier League title contender isn't only good for the Premier League but also Manchester United and will benefit the Old Trafford club.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is convinced the Old Trafford club can strive following the emergence of fierce rivals Manchester City as a genuine Premier League title challenger.

Rooney scored a terrific overhead kick against City to give the Red Devils a vital 2-1 win as they won the 2011 Premier League title. That goal, pictured, was voted the greatest goal in Premier League history by fans.

After the dramatic scenes on the final day of the Premier League last season, in which City clinched the title thanks to an injury time winner from Sergio Agüero, the 26 year old England international says the players at Old Trafford can strive under the pressure of what Sir Alex Ferguson labelled the noisy neighbours.

"City are here and they won't go anywhere soon. They've got the financial backing to compete for major honours, so we've got to strive under that pressure because they're not going away. Last season was difficult and we let ourselves down when we had a big advantage in the title race," said the striker.

"The rivalry is good for the Premier League and even for Manchester United," added Rooney.

Anders Lindegaard wants to be first choice keeper

Danish international Anders Lindegaard says he wants to prove to new manager David Moyes that he's good enough to become the first choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford ahead of team-mate David De Gea.

Manchester United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard says he's relishing the challenge of becoming the first choice shot stopper at Old Trafford this season ahead of team-mate David De Gea.

Lindegaard, 28, joined United in November 2010 from Norwegian side Aalesunds FK for a fee believed to be about £4 million and had in some peoples eyes displaced De Gea as Sir Alex Ferguson's first choice goalkeeper last season until he suffered an ankle injury in January and missed the remainder of the season.

The Danish international says he's looking to again push De Gea all the way under new manager David Moyes.

"I can't wait for the new season to begin and the games to start coming thick and fast. I'm preparing well, feeling fit and am confident I can become the first choice goalkeeper. I don't like sitting on the bench, that's not why I joined Manchester United and I don't think any footballer is happy when they're not playing. Unfortunately for us goalkeepers there isn't another position to play, you're either playing or you're warming the bench, that's just part and parcel of being a shot stopper," said Lindegaard.

"Me and David get along really well, we push each other in training and support each other on the days of games regardless of who is starting or sitting on the bench. In saying that if he has to sit on the bench for me to play more regularly then that's what has to happen," added the Dane.

Lindegaard signed a new four year deal last month that will keep him at Old Trafford until at least 2016.

I never want to leave Old Trafford says Danny Welbeck

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck says he never wants to leave Old Trafford and harbours ambitious dreams of replacing the legendary Bobby Charlton as the clubs record league goalscorer.

A small 189 goals is the difference between Bobby Charlton's goal scoring feats for Manchester United and that of young Manchester born striker Danny Welbeck, although that hasn't stopped the 21 year old from boldly claiming that he can surpass that record over the course of his Old Trafford career.

Welbeck who has scored 10 goals in 38 Premier League appearances for Manchester United has been tipped for a bright future in the game with both club and country. The 21 year old told MUTV that he hoped to finish his career at Old Trafford and had dreams of becoming the clubs record league goalscorer during that time.

"I'm a Manchester lad and every game I play for the club is special. It's a dream come true and I cherish every moment, I grew up dreaming of playing at Old Trafford and now it's a reality, it's incredible," says Welbeck.

"Honestly if I could sign a contract to keep me at the club for life I'd do it today, I don't want to leave and hopefully that never happens. I don't want to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona, it doesn't interest me, I'm already playing for the club I love, my club, the one I grew up supporting and dreaming of playing just one game for. As a kid I also dreamt of becoming the clubs record goalscorer, so it'd be fantastic to work towards achieving that, you know dreams can come true, so why not give that a go," added the England international.

Welbeck has four years to run on his current contract at Old Trafford and could be set for a pay rise over the course of the next two seasons should he impress in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.
