Northern Irish manager Brendan Rodgers has resigned from his job as Liverpool boss after only one season of management at the Anfield club.

A club statement from Liverpool said: "Unfortunately the reign of Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool manager has not worked out the way we hoped. Brendan was very vocal about wanting funds for new signings but in the current day and age the football club can simply not afford the sum of money that Brendan was asking. He gave the club an ultimatum saying that he would resign if he wasn't given the funds so unfortunately he is no longer manager of Liverpool Football Club."

"No man is bigger than Liverpool Football Club and its fans. Liverpool is a club for the community and we will not be held to ransom over transfer funds. The search for a new Liverpool manager will begin immediately and we will be looking to have a new manager in place by the end of the current month."

BBC Sport managed to catch up with Brendan Rodgers as he left Anfield after handing in his notice to the Liverpool board.

"Obviously I'm extremely disappointed to be leaving Liverpool after just one season but my position had clearly become untenable. I always believed in my ability to do the job but with the lack of transfer funds made available, it's simply not possible to match the expectations of the board. What they are looking for is a miracle worker and that is not me. I wish Liverpool Football Club all the best in the future."

O'NEILL LAUGHS OFF LIVERPOOL LINK

Former Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has laughed off rumours that he is to return to management by taking the reigns of Liverpool.

O'Neill, 61, was sacked as Sunderland manager earlier this year in March with Paulo Di Canio replacing him at the Stadium Of Light. Prior to his stint as manager of Sunderland, O'Neill had managed Aston Villa, Celtic and Leicester City.

Speaking to BBC Sport earlier today, O'Neill said: "There is no way I'm joining Liverpool and I have no idea where that has come from. It wasn't long ago that I was managing in the Premier League with Sunderland and we all know how that ended. I have no desire to return to football management in the near future and I'm happy spending time away from football with my wife."

"Obviously being linking with a club with the stature of Liverpool is very flattering but I'm just not interested. The stress of being a Premier League manager has been with me for a long time and I just want to have a break away from the game for a little while."

Current Blackpool boss and former Liverpool captain Paul Ince has revealed that he would snap at the chance of managing former club Liverpool if he was given the chance.

Ince, 45, played for Liverpool between the years 1997 and 1999 and was a regular in the Liverpool midfield. He joined the Anfield club from Italian side Inter Milan and was named captain for the 1997/98 season. His first season with Liverpool was trophy less but became a fan favorite after scoring crucial goals such as equalizers at home to rivals Everton and away at Tottenham, the latter being an overhead kick. Ince's second season was again trophy less and at the end of it, Ince was placed on the transfer list by the manager Gerard Houllier. He left Anfield to join Middlesbrough for £1million.

As a manager, Ince has had a small amount of success but has generally been average. He started at Macclesfield and managed to save them from relegation on the last day of the season. A spell at MK Dons followed where he won the Football League Trophy and earned promotion to League One. Ince's only previous experience of Premier League management was at Blackburn in 2008. During his time at Ewood Park, Ince only managed 3 wins in 17 games and was sacked in December.

In an interview on Sky Sports News, Ince revealed he'd love the chance to manage Liverpool. "I'm not going to lie, I'd love the chance to manage Liverpool. I loved my two years there and I'd love to go back there. The fans there are among the best I've ever seen and no offence to Blackpool and their fans, there is no set of fans like them. I also feel like I've got unfinished business in the Premier League after Blackburn and I want to prove myself as a top flight manager."

BENITEZ RULES OUT LIVERPOOL RETURN

Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has ruled out a return to the Anfield club after leaving his role as Chelsea interim manager.

Benitez was previously manager of the Anfield club between the years of 2004 and 2010 and had a number of success at Liverpool. In May 2005, Benitez became the second Liverpool manager to win the Champions League in their first season in charge after his side beat AC Milan on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw which saw Liverpool overturn a 3-0 half time deficit. The season after, he won the FA Cup, again on penalties as Liverpool beat West Ham after a 3-3 draw. Liverpool's best performance in the Premier League under Benitez was in 2008-09 when they finished second behind Manchester United.

The Spaniard left Liverpool in 2010 and returned to English football last season when took over as Chelsea manager. This coming after a short spell at Italian club Inter Milan. The reaction to the appointment of Benitez was hostile at best due to Rafa's previous connections with Liverpool. Benitez left Chelsea at the end of the season and is currently out of work.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the Spaniard ruled out a return to Anfield at the present time but admitted he would like to return when the time is right. "Obviously I'd love to be Liverpool manager again one day but at the moment the time is not right. Liverpool is a club I hold close to my heart and I always keep up with their results but I'm not ready to return just yet."
