When Hoffenheim hired him as their head coach, Julian Nagelsmann was the Bundesliga's youngest-ever hire at age 28. To put things in perspective even further, José Mourinho, who led Porto to Champions League triumph in 2004, was only 16 years old at the time. He was also born in 1987, the year Sir Alex Ferguson became manager of Manchester United.

Nagelsmann has been greatly affected by Ralf Rangnick's pressing attitude, who was responsible for RB Leipzig's decision to sign him away from Hoffenheim in 2019. Thomas Tuchel, who was in charge of Augsburg's second team at the time when Nagelsmann, then 20, sustained the knee injury that would terminate his playing career, also once served as his coach. Before to appointing him as the coach of 1860 Munich's under-17s, Tuchel first instructed him to begin scouting opponents.
