Scouting is a vital part of building a competitive squad in Football Manager 2024, whether you’re searching for first-team players or future stars. Follow this step-by-step guide to assign your scouts effectively:

Access the Scouting Section

  • Navigate to the Scouting tab from the sidebar.
  • Locate the Recruitment Focus sub-tab within the Scouting menu.
  • Click on Create Recruitment Focus to begin setting up a new scouting assignment.

Customize Your Recruitment Focus

Define the purpose of your scouting assignment:

  • Position: The UI for this is a little confusing, but don’t worry i’m here to help. You have 3 options:
    • Scout for specific positions: Just leave “Any position from tactic” unchecked and click the positions you want to scout, easy.
    • Scout for players that match your tactics: Check the “Any position from tactic” checkbox and then make sure to use the dropdown to select “Any”.
      • Avoid this Common mistake: A mistake a lot of people make is to check the checkbox and then leave the dropdown set to just one of their tactics. If you do this then when you switch between tactics, your recruitment focus won’t update and you’ll be scouting players not suitable. Annoying right? You have no idea how many “export” streamers i’ve seen do this.
    • Scout for any position: If you just want to scout for any player and don’t care what position they play then annoyingly you have to leave “Any Position from Tactic” unchecked and then individually click all 24 positions individually. It’s stupid I know, hopefully this is improved in FM25!
  • Areas: Choose the region, countries, or even specific competitions you want to target.
  • Assign the scout best suited for the task:
  1. Select a scout with high knowledge of the specified region or countries for optimal results.
  2. Prioritize scouts with strong Judging Player Ability and Judging Player Potential attributes to ensure accurate player assessments.
  • Consider Adaptability if the assignment involves extensive travel or unfamiliar regions. A more adaptable scout can quickly develop knowledge of new areas.
  • Priority: Set the assignment to Ongoing to continuously scout the region until manually stopped, or select between Standard and Top Priority if you need to come up with a solution on short term. Just remember that for Top Priority a minimum of two scouts are needed and this will stretch your resources instead of only one scouted needed for standard.
  • Add other relevant filters, such as age, preferred foot, or contract status (e.g., free agents or transfer-listed players).

Every Detail Counts

Often overlooked, under Further Details you can customize the recruitment focus even more, with those standout five options:

  • Transfer Value
  • Contract Status (e.g. expiring)
  • Player Style (Ability to search for a leader or a creative or even physical player)
  • General Happiness = Unhappy
  • Club Vision (don’t forget what you have signed up for or you might end up fired)

Monitor and Review Scout Reports

  • Scouts will compile detailed reports on players matching your criteria.
  • Check the Scouting Overview tab regularly to review their findings.
  • Use the provided Scout Recommendations to identify players suitable for your squad.
