If you’re new to Football Manager 2024, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. To help you get off to a great start, here are five simple but effective tips to improve your managerial experience.

Choose Maximum Coach Badges and Previous Player Experience

When setting up your manager profile, select the highest coaching badges and past playing experience possible:

  • Coaching Badges: The highest Badge gives you the most points to spend on Coaching and Mental Attributes.
  • Past Playing Experience: The highest Experience means you have a high reputation, making it easier to manage your players, attract better players and job opportunities. Your board will also be more likely to give you what you ask for. But remember “with great power comes great responsibility”.

Extra Tip: a smart strategy is to allocate your attribute points to maximize areas that are harder to find in staff hires for example:

Attacking + Tactical or Defending + Technical

Adjust Your Finances Between Wages and Transfer Budget

If you’re short on transfer funds but have extra wage budget (or vice versa), you can adjust your budget in the finances section. This flexibility helps when making last-minute transfers or balancing club expenses.

  • Navigate to the Finances tab from the sidebar
  • Locate the Summary menu
  • Click on Make Budget Adjustment
  • Slide the bar to the direction you want to allocate the budget
  • Confirm

Show Player Names on Pitch View

By default, only shirt numbers are displayed during matches, making it harder to track players. Enabling player names makes it easier to identify who’s performing well and who needs to be subbed off.

  • Click on FM
  • Head to Preferences
  • Locate the Match menu under Advanced
  • Tick Show all player names during match

Use Staff Responsibilities to Save Time

Football Manager has a lot of micromanagement, so don’t be afraid to delegate tasks to your staff. You can let your assistant handle training, scouting, or even media duties, allowing you to focus on tactics and match preparation. Check our Staff Responsibilities guide here.

Look for Free Agents

Signing free agents is a great way to strengthen your squad without spending on transfer fees. These players are available for free, meaning you only need to negotiate wages and signing bonuses, making them perfect for clubs with tight budgets. Many free agents are experienced veterans who can provide leadership or young talents released by bigger clubs who still have potential to develop.

  • Navigate to the Scouting tab from the sidebar.
  • Locate the Players menu.
  • Click on New Search
  • Besides your other filters set Contract Status as Expired
