With this Out-of-Possession role the Dropping Defensive Midfielder is asked to move back into the defensive line as his team are pinned back into their own defensive third, acting as an additional Centre-Back. During the earlier phases of the opposition attack, he will act as a more traditional Defensive Midfielder.
You’ll notice the Dropping Defensive Midfielder at DMCL or DMCR, will slot in at DCL or DCR respectively to form a temporary back five; as a lone DM, he will drop between the two centre-backs, and in a back three he will position himself between the wide and central defenders.

- Drops into defence to cover gaps when full-backs push out.
- Becomes a temporary centre-back in deeper phases.
- Adjusts position based on shape: left, central, or between defenders.
