With this Out-of-Possession role the Screening Defensive Midfielder is asked to defend the space in front of his central defenders. He is less likely to leave his position to press the opposition, instead looking to protect his zone and block passing lanes.
You’ll notice the Screening Defensive Midfielder rarely step out to press unless the opponent is very close, maintaining a disciplined position across all thirds of the pitch.
