With this Out-of-Possession role the Tracking Wide Midfielder is asked to track back defensively as the opposition advance into his own defensive third in order to support the defenders behind him, at times even dropping into the backline as an additional defender. He is expected to actively support the team defensively against wide attacking threats.

This role mainly applies in the defensive and middle thirds, while in attack they behave like a normal wide midfielder. When the ball is on their side, they double up with the full-back; when it’s on the opposite flank, they tuck inside to defend the far post, sometimes dropping into the defensive line.

  • Drops back to support the full-back and cover wide threats
  • Doubles up defensively when the ball is on their side

  • Tucks in to defend the far post when play is on the opposite flank
