With this Out-of-Possession role the Splitting Outlet Attacking Midfielder is asked to avoid tracking back to help out the defenders behind him as much, instead looking to hold a higher position more in order to be in a dangerous position for a counter-attack when the ball turns over. As the opposition progresses play, he will also look to drift out into the channels. This allows him to start counter-attacks from wide, usually with the aim to exploit the space often not found in more central areas of the pitch.
You’ll notice the Splitting Outlet Attacking Midfielder in systems without wide players, will hold position rather than track opposition full-backs, occasionally shifting wider when the ball is on their side.
