With this Out-of-Possession role the Tracking Attacking Midfielder is asked to track back defensively as the opposition advance into his own defensive third in order to support the defenders behind him, dropping back into a deeper defensive position. The player is expected to actively support the team defensively against central attacking threats.
You’ll notice the Tracking Attacking Midfielder adopting a “safety first” approach when defending deep, slotting into midfield to form a compact three-player shield ahead of the back line.

- Drops back to track runners and protect central areas.
- Helps form a compact midfield unit ahead of the defence.
- Supports the press like a normal attacking midfielder in attack.
