FM26 Match Engine Has Been Updated
FM26 Match Engine was just updated on February 11th which will have broken many tactics.
This is a generic message applied to all FM26 tactics check for tests with an ME Version 26.2 or greater.
In this description i'll explain what every role is and what their purpose is in this tactic.
The BGK/SK roles for the goalkeeper. These roles are essential especially because of the high line that is being played. Just like Barcelona's Joan Garcia in real life he'll act as sort of a last line of defence. He'll be much more forward than the average goalkeeper and he'll act as a “Neuer” type goalkeeper.
The BCB/CB roles for the central defenders. I didn't pick these roles because they are “meta”, because I could've just as easily made them normal CB and let them take less risks, but that's just not how I roll. I need these defenders to take more risks with their passes, purely because I want them to try to catch the oppositions defence off guard.
The HB/DM role for the sole defensive midfielder. I wanna talk about this role first, because in possession he essentially works as a third defender. But rather than letting him take more risks, i kept him on balanced risks. I did this purely because if he does make a mistake and loses the ball in the midfield, whilst all other players are forward, except for the two central defenders, There's going to be a much higher chance of the team conceding. This is also, because out of possession i told him to press more which results in him leaving that third defensive role and essentially pressing the player that took the ball away from him and leaving the two central defenders on their own which, if you have seen any barcelona games these past two years, you'll know how many goals they concede because of mistakes in the midfield.
The PWB/FB role for the right full back. The right back turns into a wing back/deep lying playmaker kind of player helping the midfield when needed and he'll also make the right passes. He'll be an extra midfielder, because of that HB defensive midfielder making sure that we do not lose the battle in the midfield.
The WB/FB role for the left full back. The left back is a Wing back that gives the team width not only in possession, but also out of possession. In possession he'll overlap making crosses from near the byline, he'll also dribble more meaning he'll have to take some responsibility in creating his own crossing chances. Out of possession i told him to Press more often, purely because i know there are going to be at least three defenders back if the ball is lost on his side of the pitch. It could be that the right full back could be quick enough to get back and act as a third defender and maybe even a fourth defender if the HB waits a bit to press.
The CM/CM role for the left central midfielder. The left central midfielder is a simple central midfielder in possession, because i want him to connect defence with attack. He'll take more risks while passing, because i want him to try passes that break down defences. Because if one of the attackers decides to run into some space or even the left full back that wants to overlap, i want that midfielder to be able to make that pass.
The AP/PCM role for the right central midfielder. The right central midfielder is an advanced playmaker, because i want him to connect midfield with attack. If for example the left central midfielder can't find a pass that could help break down the defence, or maybe even the PWB that comes in midfield from the right full back position, I want there to be midfielder that can penetrate the defence by essentially working in tight spaces between the oppositions defence an his own teams midfield. And because he's so much more forward than the other midfielders, I gave him a PCM role because I want him to actively press whilst he's already so much forward, meaning that with the other three attackers in this tactic there's going to be a fourth player pressing the opposition's defence. Now you could say that the midfield would be exposed because of this, but the reality is that there'll be two other midfielders waiting if the goalkeeper or any defender tries to pass the ball to the their midfield players. If they do find some passes in the midfield and you know that they will cause problems in the future, you could opt to change that role into a normal CM role that still presses but not as much as with the PCM role.
Now onto the attack;
The WFD/W role for both the Left winger and Right winger. Both the right winger and the left winger have the same roles and also the same instructions, in possession they'll both dribble more and stay wider. Now with the right winger you'd say that that role is self explanatory, because there should be some width on the right side because of the PWB that plays somewhat inverted. The left winger will also stay wider, because of the third and final attacker the striker. Because the striker plays as a false nine he'll be acting somewhat as a attacking midfielder that roams from his position, meaning that he could be a bit more on the left or a bit more on the right depending on the situation he's in. That's why the left winger is on stay wider so that the false nine can do his own thing an to not disrupt him. Now out of possession both wingers will be assigned to their respective counter full backs, meaning that the left winger will tightly mark the right back and the right winger will tightly mark the left back. I've done this not because it was “meta” in the last game or maybe even this game, but purely because of how forward both full backs will be. With the left back if he has to run all the way back after overlapping that will leave the left side full vulnerable and just open, resulting in either a goal scoring chance or a crossing chance. With the right back because he roams from his position he could also be way forward or maybe even a bit too inverted leaving all that space on the right wide open.
The F9/CFD role for the striker. Like i just said the striker will act as a false nine and essentially roam from his position to try and find the right spaces, just like how dembélé played last season. He'll leave space behind the defence, which results in the WFDs, taking advantage of the situation to run into that open space,if it does open up, and even the AP could take advantage considering he's always looking for the right spaces. That's why when you look at the goals scored by the starters, you'll see that fabian scored 22 goals which is almost unheard of for a midfielder.
All in all I had the most fun playing with this tactic, because of how expressive every single position is, except for the HB.

The real start with this tactic was actually on the 17th of january 2026, in-game of course, because that's when i found the sweet spot with this tactic. I was kind of fiddling with this tactic, because i didn't like how i was conceding so many goals, and also at times scoring so little goals. It was a game against OGC Nice in the tenth round of the French cup. After I had made a simple change which was literally taking off the take more risks instruction from the HB. After I did that i started getting a lot more goals and a lot more cleansheets or just less goals conceded in general. But in my opinion I don't think it would be totally fair to only include that game and all other games after that and leave the other games that were already played, but you can definitely see a big difference, between before that period and after that period.
An even more interesting note is that after the 27th of february, I lost my main goalkeeper in chevalier for two whole months and had to use my back up in Safonov. Even then I didn't really see any problems as the tactic just flourished. And after that on the 10th of april I even lost Safonov, my fricking backup. So I then had to resort to using a Paris SG 2 Goalkeeper in Renato Marin until the 6th of may in a game against galatasaray, which resulted in a 3-3 draw. That was the only game in which marin really had a bad game because before that we were still winning and keeping clean sheets even with my backup to my backup. Just shows that defensively we were very sound even with a “bad” goalkeeper. The stress i experienced with those injuries turned me gray😅😅.

a team that in real life at this time (5th of january) is 13th in the bundesliga, getting them to win the double is just amazing. btw one slight change to the tactic, instead of a HB i changed the role to a simple DM, no extra instructions.
