A meeting of the minds as the top of the table clash finished deadlocked in front of a sizable crowd. We edged the first half with two key highlights, a Cremona free kick pushed round the post by Bugeja and Darren Buhagiar heading over from a corner. The unbeaten stripes came out of their shell in the second half, Maverick Farrugia from a tight angle dragged his shot wide to keep us on our toes. Boonmee Wangchan clumsily earned a second yellow for a clatter in the back to perhaps leave us unstuck for the remainder of the game. On the contrary we nearly won the game only for a worldy of a save from Bugeja again to deny Jake Muscat which was destined for the top corner. Honours even, gutted we didn't take more from it but given the red card I'll settle with a point.

Might have been too soon to consider him for first team football.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/v3DCm5jLGuFw6yX0LmXfkJ7JOCU0fD0GT4Iov3LK.png

The Birkirkara game shifted us into positive form to dominate Fgura United. Darren Buhagiar's 6'5" build and 15 jumping reach was too much for Fgura's defense and headed in Matthew Cremona's free kick on the right hand side to lead at the break. Warren Fenech equalised out of nowhere, though the fault kind of rested on Gauci in goal as he failed miserably to punch a free kick away and instead leaving Warren to head it into an empty net. Thankfully it didn't fluster us and Roderick Pace returned our lead just five minutes later. Jake Muscat's powerful effort in injury time wrapped things up to continue our battle for the top.

Enjoying life at Valletta.

Lija Athletic were rooted to the bottom of the league and helped them remain there with another cosy victory. Roderick Pace into double figures for the season, finishing cleanly from 12 yards to put us one up. The two Farrugias combined for the second, Ayrton pulling back a ball for Rudi to fire in the second and keep things routine. Pace grabbed another with twenty minute left to add further punishment. Lija's best effort summarised their day in a nutshell, Darrell Borg is through one on one with Gauci but blazes it well wide. The win lifts us to the top of the league.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/4UPL3eARl6hnvNPTBHYlCADVQiyg0fK4DCb4eZF5.png

Too many yellow cards are becoming problematic, Ayrton misses our next game.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/zNFJPAAQHliytusBdHR4oNLkWSrNSSpcGyt7PULk.png

Easy come, easy go. We fall to second again after a sturdy Pietà Hotspurs side blocked us out. Had three moments to score in the game; both Juan Ángel and Roderick Pace were denied by the frame of the goal plus Neil Agius was repudiated by a superb double save from Hotspurs keeper Andrea Cassar. The home side looked well organised which made it very difficult to find a way through, despite not having much going forward. Pietà are having a stellar season so far and top marks for them for denying us a third win on the bounce.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/I5n0XaPCIoY7Nq2GqKSwqchsVit2LOepCA7ub9Wx.png

Certainly a problem with yellow cards, it rules Jason Attard out for the next game. Thankfully it counts for cup matches too, which is our next game and we'll be rotating anyways.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/UkVQAhGqvuQbkuLhXDaxMt1zYZZoK1aqUte63gxz.png

On a lighter note, our training facilities are upgraded to a 'below average', 1.5* level. Best in the country though.

RESULTS OVERVIEW

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/33Iv1YhUdYy2HJPr5tR0npp1fIkZqcRcpNSuaK6r.png

I'm content with November's results, even if it did result in two draws. We're still a lean, mean, attacking team with Roderick Pace in fine goalscoring form. It stretches our unbeaten streak to eight, but in my experience it does not guarantee job safety *cough* Connahs Quay *cough*.

LEAGUE TABLE

http://i.imgur.com/aRZ5ZP8.png?1

Still nip and tuck with us and Birkirkara who are still to lose a game in the league. Perhaps if we had won our encounter with them it would be different but it could lead to a dramatic showdown come the end of the season. Sliema lead the chasing cavalry with Pietà and Hibernians following up.

A proper goal fest at home to Gżira United, recording my second biggest win in my FM17 career. Roddy Pace, an own goal from Jurgen Falzon and a terrific solo effort from Neil Agius completely buckled the visitors in the space of just four minutes; trailing 3-0 before the opening quarter. Agius grabbed a fourth before half time, or so he thought but strayed offside to keep it at three. It was not Jurgen Falzon's day, getting in front of Pace's shot for his second own goal of the day to make it four. Agius eventually doubled his tally to make it five from a tight angle, before providing for Juan Ángel for six. John Camilleri and a former player of mine Neil Schembri grabbed consolatory goals for the visitors due to poor defending, however Ben Coyle got in on the act to put the seventh and final goal past a truly inferior Gżira United team.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/Iua73Jp175DYpRMXHnxg5sfYPBSOociTSY0vR25N.png

Losing Juan Ángel is a serious blow but at least there's an international break to rehabilitate in time for our next game.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/FwE3VLqSUhvgefpVGPJmLeanRZlED62xwpFibvPC.png

Oh, bother. Rudi out for a couple of weeks after picking up a sprained ankle on international duty with the Malta squad against Montenegro. How costly could that be?

The scoreline definitely flattered us, Ħamrun Spartans were well in this game for large portions of the match. Redeemer Borg ironically almost gave Ħamrun the lead after a calamitous error set Ryan Grima through but thankfully it was blocked out for a corner. We took the lead through Ayrton, somehow wedging a shot past a sea of bodies in the six yard box and on the line and still somehow couldn't keep it out. Both keepers we busy towards the end of the half, Gauci saving well from Shawn Sant and Roddy Pace denied by Josef Bajada at the other end. Pace made it 2-0 ten minutes after the restart, but it would've been 1-1 if Matthew Brincat made a brilliant last ditch challenge to initiate the counter. Tension started to build when Ħamrun pulled one back from Ryan Grima on the counter, but it soon subsided when Juan Ángel scored off the bench to restore the two goal cushion, despite him still picking up a knock. Roddy Pace finished the job at 4-1.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/Jv3gcDyDFPZtN15Fi2C7YRK75dXXUu4JT687GoNE.png

Blew it at home to Floriana, one of our arch rivals who rescued a point in the very last highlight. Pace is keeping his goalscoring ratio at 1:1, scoring his 7th goal in 7 games to help us hit the front early on. Cremona bending another free kick in made it two with Floriana looking helpless. Matthew Magri wouldn't stand for it, getting the emeralds back into the game with the last half hour to play. Eerily quiet but for one last highlight deep into injury time, thought we did enough to keep them at bay but down the left channel Charlie Muscat pulled it back for sub Joshua Dimech to equalise to the delight of the Floriana fans in the away stand. Bottlers!

BOV PREMIER DIVISION

Starting off the season with a good stuffing of my former club Pembroke Athleta. Three nil up before the 20th minute, Roderick Pace, Rudi Farrugia and young striker Neil Agius all on the scoresheet. Juan Ángel came off the bench to try and impress in the 67th minute, well it only took two minutes for him to win us a penalty and convert it himself. Not a bad league debut I must say. Matthew Gauci had the first day jitters, at fault for their goal back as he sprinted out of the area to chase a loose ball but instead of hoofing it he tried to be cool about it, a deft touch to try and take it past Christian Thomas but Thomas had the trigger pulled in advance and rolled it into an empty net. Did make up for it as he stopped Karl Ciantar (former Melita and Valletta player) from making it a nervy finale. Confident opener.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/CA3je4nWSbsfblS1ArdS7rPtmfnG0r6M8wujKhvf.png

Speaking of stuffings, how about this for a scoreline? Last year's champions Sliema of course won 3-0 in the last meeting, but it didn't take long for us to ruin their gameplan. Pace opening it up within two minutes, hitting the post at the first attempt and by eight minutes he grabbed another, with help from Ángel to square it into his path. It would've been three just a moment later however Neil Agius was a fraction offside. Ángel virtually had the game won by half time, slotting under the keeper to pile the misery on a very low confidence Sliema side. We continued the freight train attitude in the second half, Agius was having the game of his life, setting up the fourth and fifth goals for Rudi and Ángel respectively. The skill to keep the ball in play for the fourth by the way - on the chest, control, turn, swivel, into Rudi, absolutely sublime.

A more gripping affair despite largely dominating Żebbuġ Rangers. Early signs were good, Buhagiar's header rebounding off the crossbar to deny his second goal of the season. Midway through the half, Ángel was shoved in the box and the ref pointed to the spot; straight down the middle with power, Ángel poked our noses in front. Matthew Cremona's free-kicks are a thing of beauty, adding leverage to the scoreline before half time. The visitors didn't sit back, Melvin Camilleri pulling one back to bring an air of uncertainty around Ta' Qali. Luckily for us, Żebbuġ couldn't find their creative touch to find another and allowed us to continue our winning spree.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/fPdwaH753dJyfj99HyVAXK7teud0nILLnOp3bXGD.png

Ángel is on fire right now, four goals and two assists this season it's no wonder his ability is already growing. The boy is something special.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/ViScJ5A3nmNqFzc8r49AsTWhsf9QpLMFQugxjZVZ.png

Aaargh! There goes the winning streak in a game we pretty much had the edge. Nullified Hibernians for the majority of the game and should have had it sealed long before their only goal. Cremona went close from 25 yards, Neil Agius struck the crossbar and also brought a great save from John Cilia in net. Then came the crushing blow, changed things from 'standard' to 'attacking' and in typical FM fashion it was a retrospective error - dispossessed deep in the Hibs half, bring the ball forward, lump one up to Ian Schembi who is clear of the last defender to thump it past Gauci for the winner. Woodwork denied us twice more coming to the end of the game, raising the tally to three. A poor defeat.

RESULTS OVERVIEW

A flurry of goals but I can't help but feel that defeat could come back to haunt us. Juan Ángel, Neil Agius and Roderick Pace as our front three is orgasmic.

Did a tidy up of the squad, leaving behind any unnecessary space behind. Released a good number of aging players plus some who were never going to amount to anything. Made a bold move and let both Mario Pace and Alex Mizzi leave for Sliema Wanderers, was unsure if they'd force their way into the first team after one or two deals coming in. One of our academy players leaving on loan to Qrendi for the season.

Taken a strategic approach with the ins, one player in each position with some coming in through blind impulse. Agent offers brought one or two of these guys to my attention.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/LeQarRkUrzPw5wkexI7T9dKiDrjukYtLFuFrbrMO.png

Boonmee Wangchan - M(C) - unattached free agent

This is a first for me on FM, signing a Thai footballer. Taking a gamble with him as I can sense some development in his game at only 18. Long way to go mentally, physically average but possesses some decent technical traits to be a playmaker. May get some first team exposure over the coming season and am looking forward to how he'll get on.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/UcJ699quuLpCXhhB6BdrLv6JFXB5xeoPzw93jTQ5.png

Juan Ángel - ST(C) - free transfer from Cyclones Quibdó

Agent offers can be a godsend to small clubs sometimes, this Colombian striker has me salivating with anticipation. Great with his head and with his feet, just needs to sharpen up technically everywhere else. Surely a gem in the rough to improve our strikeforce.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/jCMKtOazt5tKjkqZ67VwcBg9BWTD5kAwAtZC5zPo.png

Matthew Gauci - GK - free transfer from Pietà Hotspurs

Addressing the goalkeeping issue we have, but I'll be honest with you...there just ain't a great selection of quality keepers on offer in Malta. Matthew is what we settled on, despite having poor kicking, communication and positioning. Praying that the defense ahead of him are capable of blocking out shots before it comes to Gauci. Still young and can still improve.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/BA6YRcfl6fatmJdkIbKG93RcByyISSAIY5V5nAcf.png

Julian Galea - D(C)/D(R) - free transfer from Żebbuġ Rangers

With Mario Pace sold, needed a defensive replacement and although he can't play out on the left, I think Julian is a solid backup. Physically impressive, technically capable and mentals aren't too shabby either. Fourth signing under the age of 21, but Valletta have expected me to bring in youth as part of the club philosophy.

EUROPA LEAGUE

FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND DRAW

http://i.imgur.com/aCbSIKF.png?1

Tough ask, we travel to Hungary to play a side who are no stranger to European competition in Videoton. Will we be heroic?

FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND, LEG 1 (AWAY)

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/d6qklvUMX5wM6yPqmO9M4dpa69esgf4hphPfMg5A.png

No, we would not be but we gave it one hell of a go. Péter Juhász was a machine who singlehandedly torpedoed our defense. Behind after 37 seconds, a 60-70 yard ball from the back line all the way up to Juhász who squeezed it past Bartolo. We regained our composure and Bartolo swatted away an effort from Gergő Laki to avoid further punishment. Out of nowhere we equalised from a Videoton corner, burst away with Juan Ángel setting up Ayrton Farrugia who delivered a rocket from 25 yards and granted us the indispensable away goal to take back to Malta. Juhász restored the Hungarian's lead, starting a run from before the halfway line and dribbled majestically all the way into our box for a sublime solo effort. His pace was too much to handle for us and went away again to complete his hat-trick before half time. Second half belonged to us, and were desperately unlucky not to grab another way goal - Ben Coyle was a livewire, hitting the post and afterwards forced their keeper into a fine stop. Jake Muscat also rattled the frame of the goal, ceasing the game at 3-1.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/nncgBN3Mhi5tV0eBGuCi7GCfDYni1HOg83iEi0sr.png

Meanwhile in Sweden...Christ, glad we avoided Henrik Larsson's Helsingborgs.

FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND, LEG 2 (HOME)

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/QkhzkL7XkfugwbQWRZe2euPo9Am6WBGAuOLJxtFb.png

Again, a brave performance but no doughnut. Juhász wasn't the threat on this occasion but instead Tibor Kun. Made it too easy for them with the first goal, simple cross simple finish and conceding an away goal. Centre back Darren Buhagiar brought the game level, casual defending from a corner and a few passes in the box later, ping. Curse the commentator, moments later we also casually defended from a corner to allow Kun his second with a free header to put the game beyond reach. Two away goals meant we needed to score four more. At least we grabbed one back to level the game on the night, Roddy Pace in typical poacher fashion finished with aplomb from the edge of the area. Debutant keeper Gauci denied Juhász with a fantastic one on one save shortly into the second half, but after that the chances dried up for the visitors and putting us in the ascendancy. Valletta applied some pressure as Ayrton struck the bar from a 20 yard effort but the game ended all square and seeing us out at the first round stage. Can't fault our efforts, but it would have been nice to claim a win on the night. Beaten 5-3 on aggregate.

EXPECTATIONS

As you were from the previous season, aiming high and seeking both league and cup glory. Super cup isn't too important. £325K in the budget but it's rare to spend anything in this league.

BOV SUPER CUP

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/zAgywbBiQ5YCuwBMiZvMlapN3TqsuMuKTL3nbnmK.png

Listed as 3-1 favourites to win the league this season but it's fairly tough pickings with sides like Sliema, Hibernians, Floriana and even maybe Birkirkara in that mixture. Never easy to call this league and I'm fearful it'll leave this weight of expectation on us.

It's a shame that the English press will never rate Xhaka or Özil, they're brainwashing people in to never actually watch them play football

I've always rated Xhaka, despite having a temperament he's a proper work horse. Özil is very hit and miss.

From the brief glimpses I've seen of Rudi Farrugia in action, he certainly merits the player of the season. In fact our only defeat came due to the absence of him, and the fans are in worship of the lad, definitely a key player to this club. Matthew Cremona and Roderick Pace just in behind Rudi. Cremona did however take Valletta goal of the season, he doesn't score regular goals, however this was in the quarter final against Swieqi United but I'd have chosen his goal in the final instead.

Still a wonderful strike though:
https://streamable.com/9mgfn

Redeemer Borg was signing of the season though I had no part in that, while Mario Pace took young player of the season.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/gs4X9QVjZxIZumrUSrLyfDvMVJY5iXWSf2KEpmyQ.png

Roddy Pace still has the golden touch, accumulating 15 goals for the season plus the highest average rating of just over 7. Not overly impressive ratings over the course of the season, but under my watchful eye that'll surely improve. Mark Camilleri bagged 11 assists despite only playing once under me. Pass completion from Cremona was the best, but only 74% is alarmingly bad in my book, passing drills need to happen over the summer. Pace and Rudi joint top of man of the match table with three, again a little disappointing. Jason Attard needs a bit of discipline by the looks of it, 9 yellow cards for the season but Ayrton Farrugia and Alex Mizzi were the only two to pick up red cards this season.

Roddy Pace was electrifying early on, first scoring after two minutes and directly after kick off had a gilt edged chance for a second but denied by Chris Bugeja's point blank save. The second came courtesy of shambolic corner defending as the keeper and defender got in a tangle as the ball landed for centre back Matthew Brincat. Poor corner defending technique gave Birkirkara a way back into the game through Jesmond Grech's free header to make it 2-1 and shortly into the second half a thumping effort from Simon Magri brought the game level. Birkirkara nearly completed the comeback, however Luke Callus was ruled out for offside. Coincidentally the resulting free kick led to the winning goal, booting it upfield where Rudi Farrugia dribbled into space and unleashed a remarkable solo effort to clinch the bragging rights and deny the stripes the league. Noisy neighbours out in force.

SEMI FINAL

Safely avoiding an upset following a conventional win over Marsa to contest a cup final. Opening quarter of the game was in our favour, including the scoreline as Ben Coyle was shoved over in the area and Cremona calmly slotted the penalty that followed. Marsa striker Julian Galea sent a brief shiver down Valletta fan's spines, forcing a good stop from Bartolo to keep it at 1-0. Any doubts were soon put to rest through Ben Coyle, extending the lead, loving to place shots into the bottom right corner and duly delivered. Coyle and sub Neil Agius had chances to grab a third but their keeper came to their rescue. One win away from my first piece of silverware since the Faroe Islands.

Professional job done as Valletta are crowned FA Trophy winners! Some cracking forward play devastated that Ħamrun defense, complimented by some beautiful goals. Roderick Pace rarely scores with his head but made an exception from Rudi Farrugia's cross with a little help from the upright. The second goal just oozed class, but Justin Cardona deserves most of the credit for putting it on a plate for us; Pace easily steals the ball from him, decides to cut back early to Ben Coyle who hits it first time onto the sweet spot to almost break the goal - a proper cup final goal. Ryan Grima summed up the Spartans' day, failing to hit the target from close range to keep them two adrift. The resulting goal kick led to our third, and talking of net busters, pick that one out from Matthew Cremona.

But don't take my word for it, enjoy the highlights while we dance on the streets of Valletta.

Not all doom and gloom, piece of silverware and Europa League football next season to look forward to. I'm amazed Pembroke Athleta are still alive in this league.

Steady as she goes, but taking a vital win on my first day. Rudi Farrugia smashed a free kick with power to open the scoring. Tarxien responded well into the second half, Johann Gauci leaping highest from a corner to loop a header over the stranded Bartolo in goal. Thought it was going to turn hairy once Alex Mizzi received his second yellow to earn him an early bath, it almost did when Wayne Muscat was denied by the outstretched hand of Bartolo to keep the sides level. Against the odds, we snatched it, who else but Roderick Pace to do the business with his poacher instincts to gracefully sweep it home from 8 yards out. Still in the hunt as Birkirkara and Floriana both dropped points, however Sliema won their game to top the league.

http://i.imgur.com/aQfFyUM.png?1

Mizzi out for the rest of the season due to a suspension, accumulated too many yellows during the season and out for two games.

I don't want to make excuses here, but I think the FA Trophy match as you'll see below may justify why we were heavily beaten. Lethargic, uninspiring and outmuscled all ends up. Charlon Bonnici got Sliema tails up, curling one low into the bottom right corner away from Bartolo. The absence of Rudi Farrugia hit us hard in midfield as our boys were lost without him, David Cassar charged forward unscathed to apply a neat finish for two and to rub salt in the wounds he struck again six minutes later, punishing a sloppy pass by Mario Pace. Goodnight Vienna.

FA TROPHY

QUARTER FINAL

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/NEvDlgp3jQPTtAOrgkW7dElubTAbJvBGjcnHjTAr.png

And this was the reason why we looked jaded for the Sliema league match. First division side Swieqi United were no pushovers, heroically keeping us out until the 115th minute. Took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room, a brilliant free kick from Matthew Cremona and also set up Ben Coyle to curl one in and theoretically control the game. Swieqi found belief through a pretty odd goal, Micallef's header at goal saved onto the underside of the crossbar...but lands on his back and into the goal for 2-1. Cremona pulled a beauty from his holster to restore our two goal advantage, but Michael Micallef punished us twice again to complete a brave fightback. Weary legs going into extra time, we thought we'd kill them off from Roderick Pace - but back they came! Shawn Sant pierced through our defensive wall again for 4-4. Despite the valiance and perspiration, the pendulum swung in our favour again, Roderick Pace again to send Swieqi United home.

Didn't take long before I found a new job, less than two months in fact. Thinking of buying a summer house out here, I've been to Malta so often recently but my third spell might just be a little bit more promising as Valletta FC have banked their trust in me. Easily one of the most successful clubs of the land, with 23 league titles, the third most just behind Floriana and Sliema Wanderers. Nicknamed the 'Lilywhites' due to their distinctive white kit and of course established in the capital city, Valletta.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/WtYy2UPGgjEROKuuCL8Z9fzDHu2lODVwZJZweHnb.jpg

Despite being the nation's capital, it only has a population of just under 6,500 due to the city's small 0.8 km² area. The area itself is a peninsula built on Mount Sciberras and situated between the two major harbours of Marsamxett and the Grand Harbour. The name is inherited from Jean Parisot de la Valette, a grand master of Hospitallers and the Order of Malta after his death in 1568, made official in 1570. St. John's Co-Cathedral is one of many sights to see with it's Baroque architecture and frescos painted and signed by Caravaggio.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/7wM13GR4Kl84RhR9jE64fc9906DxT05PjtjZ8aOt.jpg

Ta' Qali stadium is home to the Malta national side, but also clubs including Sliema Wanderers, Birkirkara, Hibernians and of course Valletta. The stadium holds a capacity of just under 18,000 (similar to that of QPR's Loftus Road stadium) and has a hybrid surface of grass and synthetic turf. It staged Malta's largest competitive victory back in 2008, defeating Liechtenstein 7-1 in an international friendly.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/FzBOFzeWxcXCK7nnhEygorBY4ggwjCElG0Obyuyb.png

In recent times, Valletta have won quite a number of titles - most recently in 2027-28 season in game. Not only that, but have enumerated 16 Maltese FA Trophy successes and 13 Super Cup successes. The club have been around since 1943, due to a merger of Valletta Prestons, Valletta St. Paul's and the extinct Valletta United who won two championships pre-WWII. Certainly a glittered club anxious to get their hands on more trophies.

CURRENT SEASON

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/qV3tXLMWdFVbyOjbfRV5I2WAulRGFlSh1TFtyiPQ.png

Improbable but not impossible to win the title, only four points adrift of joint leaders Birkirkara and Sliema Wanders, whom we both face in the run in. Floriana are the nearest to us, only three points away.

http://i.imgur.com/axe1vWJ.png?1

Recent form has been questionable, hence why predecessor Jacques Scerri got the boot. Only one win in their last six and must be halted before they slide down the table any further.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/e1XrPgSTklPPS3GL9AWupriEXS8X5siRCtCbwU9v.png

On the plus side, there's still a potential FA Trophy final on the cards but does it hold significance over huge games with Birkirkara and Sliema Wanders? First stop though are struggling Tarxien Rainbows.

SQUAD

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/5dBPuL3wgFXSBr6HEikyIv3PPmX4FqSakz0xVEAV.png

A familiar face of Roderick Pace has ended up at Valletta so a nice reunion there. Overall, the squad depth looks fairly capable with Rudi Farrugia being a key member. Lack quality in the strikeforce if I'm being ultra critical but the goalkeeping department looks dangerously skint, our best is only 1.5* CA and PA. Our best assister also out with suspension for our next game which doesn't help matters but with Roderick Pace in good goalscoring form, we may survive without him.

KEY PLAYER: Rudi Farrugia - M(C)

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/YBZ7XAgzxnFqlaFUFjFmYBVKnm2QOZ1tcadDw8bF.png

Not mindblowing on paper, but some attributes look impressive including his vision, leadership and passing. Might just be the man in the middle that is needed to make things happen. Physically top notch.

HOT PROSPECT: Neville Borg - M(L)

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/DqxB13RZjYELOgugSISpNDd7doK8MWbe1hxcv0p7.png

Damn, this guy looks impressive. Getting his acceleration and technique up and he could be a serious winger. Unfortunately, I'm having second thoughts about whether or not I'll use wide men for a change.

TACTIC

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/8BJzh3ZSmM1ruQNjIAIQnxet8ergYtPXy4E9LPNl.png

I've studied Valletta carefully during my past Maltese experiences and I know for a fact that a 4-3-3 will do the job and are already quite familiar with it. Two advanced forwards either side of Pace who'll be a poacher, might change one to a defensive forward if it doesn't work out. Standard back four, three man midfield incorporating a central midfielder in Rudi Farrugia, BWM in between with the advanced playmaker out on the right. Let's hope it works out for the best.

EXPECTATIONS

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/CAKwVBh80HmxmSDdArl96O0WElIHWEyqS34KFY3l.png

No pressure, just win the league and push into an FA trophy final and I'll be golden. Perhaps one of the two compensates? Funding for transfers and wages looking bang tidy for this league.

Nation: Malta
Media Prediction (Odds): 1st/14 (N/A)
Current Position: 4th
Expectations: Winners/Around top of the table
Pros: Strongest team and squad in Malta. Only four points off the top. Could easily win a title in two/three seasons. Financially strong.
Cons: Only three games to go, two of them against first and second placed teams. Would need to win all three games to realistically win the league. Always have rotten luck in Malta.

With no fixture in 18 days due to postponements, it deprived match sharpness, especially against Bangor City in a huge six pointer. Bangor bullied us in the first half, Jimmy Grundy firing the opener before Leon Burgess' 20 yard free kick left us two behind after 35 minutes. Burgess was on the cusp of a second but dragged his shot wide while we were begging for the half time whistle. It didn't get any better; Burgess completed a brace as he sliced open our defense once again to leave us in ruins. He will be gutted he didn't seal his hattrick, missing an open header that sailed wide. Rubbish performance and are starting to crack under pressure.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/5tGAm4LKpsZ0jkUixUoPbI17l7lTpxeskC1Fdl1A.png

Speaking of cracking under pressure...you've got to be kidding me...

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/RXY1qKPCHArZNDekhFKz6rBi2yaKktJemsmlu9pR.png

Sure mate, we've only got Bala, Newtown, Aberystwyth twice and TNS to come.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/qL14qMXpFYOrZE4vs40CvzFHzb5XL8p59gnnOnyT.png

Saw it coming, but we were actually competitive in this game. Nathan Fox almost delivered the perfect start from the off, but goalkeeper James Brown pulled off a save at his near post. Bala swiped the lead from a poorly defended free kick, allowing Callum Saunders to belt it in - Michael Crowe helpless. The second came from a free kick deep in their half; committed too many men forward, headered away to Saunders who ran away down the other end, squared it to Alex Dawe in acres of space to put the nail in the coffin of my CQ tenure. Nathan Fox fluffed a great chance before the break, nabbing the balling from a dallying Bala defender but only hit the side netting. Second half, Bala were almost out of sight as Alex Dawe rattled the bar with a vicious effort on the hour. Last chance saloon, Aaron Jenkins brought a brilliant save from James Brown who would not let us pass. Another game without scoring, another game nearer to my demise.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/sGGzfc3fw29H1XWQvCQ1kfnRUtjrJfstrFgy4Cwr.png

Perhaps there is still hope, switched to a conventional 4-4-2 and it did the job away to Newtown. The combo of Jenkins and Davies has been prolific and impacted once again, beautiful floated shot into the top corner from Davies for one nil early on. Nearly doubled our lead straight from the kickoff, however Peter Richards only hit the side netting. Dave Birch's vision and passing inspired the second goal, finding Aaron Jenkins in space for a second after just twenty minutes. We played with such confidence, always in cruise control and Jenkins perhaps should have added a third but missed the target from 10 yards. Much needed three points at Latham Park.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/lO4AhTMrp1nv15st4BIrtZlnMlCOxjSKkvQeoh4W.png

Cruel, cruel defeat. Neither side deserved to win in truth but we certainly deserved like losing. Hazeldine came on as a substitute and really made me wonder why I loaned him in as he missed another clanger from close range to keep it all square. The classic counter attack gave Aberystwyth the win, David Muntari's long direct pass to Tony Bitchell and there was only one outcome, straight into the net past Michael Crowe. Four defeats in five, it's all gone pear shaped.

Again, no outs but a few new faces come into the frame.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/sMmQfoKnTorg6dcJzTQ1NCPLmIjfw1o3hAFO6i2m.png

Adam Evans - M(C) - free transfer from Bury Town

My scouts did well to uncover this guy, 18 and looks exciting. Already at a 4.5* CA, could easily improve and gives us an option to perhaps play second fiddle to Aaron Jenkins. Not the quickest but certainly can do a lot with the ball. May train him up to play a more advanced role since he's at such a young age.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/10EkJ1ZB0mepoomgogtkHsMZHG9sdWmECUKSZMP0.png

Kevin Pascoe - DM/M(C) - £90 from Newtown

The more experienced option in midfield since both Birch and Bamford empty the tank a lot during games, Kevin can offer the afterburners with his brilliant work rate, determination and solid physical stats. Positioning and marking are a shade inconspicuous but grants us a little more depth in the middle since our tempo is quite high.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/VeJbOdp5ZDbVNoVYxC92vndgLN8neVoURPQaYupA.png

Max Hazeldine - ST(C) - on loan from TNS

Sort of seen as a veteran of the Welsh Premier with TNS, loaned him in for the rest of the season due to lack of attackers (plus you'll see why in a moment). Can't say he'll be stapled into the team but a worthy replacement when called upon. Still got quite good physicality at 32.

DAFABET WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/P7KiTEjUBfzFUffqi3RQvHDECMTUDNqWUjUMKnV3.png

Getting pretty sick and tired of this scoreline, I'm sure the fans are too. Grim game, not showing any quality until the final fifteen minutes. We applied most of the pressure, firstly Jenkins surrounded in green shirts could only fire wide from 12 yards. Nathan Fox couldn't believe when his late effort hit the inside of the post and rolled across the line (but not over it). If that wasn't bad enough, got to feel for the young lad Zyaac Whitehouse, put through on goal in injury time and completely choked an effort high, wide and not at all handsome. Should have won...again.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/INtTkA952D0eBRRg87NvCke0SOgjOuWxRTNhFgAk.png

This is why Max Hazeldine was brought in, Daniel Davies out for a couple of weeks with his fourth injury this season.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/uQnZ1ZKv6dEamrWxUQq07A4RTljQjuUmPPuYFfer.png

A repeat of the scoreline in the reverse of this fixture, taking the spoils on the seaside. A superb counter attack did the damage, Peter Richards loves to exploit the right flank and picked out Aaron Jenkins who powered in a header from close range. Llandudno missed a golden opportunity to get level, Steffan Thomas charging forward away from our defense but Michael Crowe came out to thwart any chance of an equaliser with a brilliant block. Back to winning ways at Maesdu Park.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/fcFb4UuM9963aeWeCeqsM3CAbMLRExR89qeQ3Xtn.png

Deeside Stadium's pitch was cut up due to the winter weather, but doesn't excuse a poor draw against Llangefni. Max Hazeldine should hang his head in shame after a seriously bad miss in the closing stages, 1-2 between Evans to Whitehouse to Hazeldine, leaving him free to finish it off past the advancing keeper...misses the target from eight yards out. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Our seventh 0-0 of the season. Jesus wept.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/nRSVkdIhSP9cF2TaSD73UgiuqFb5kdJMOSyi1vDU.png

There led to our 19 league matches without defeat and our 10 league matches without conceding streaks gone. Very shoddy display to an inferior Port Talbot side aiming to avoid the drop. Highlightless first half (what's new?) pursued by a bolt from the blue, the blue of Port Talbot as Darren Bonnell was put through, stayed level with the last defender and coolly finished through the legs of Crowe for 1-0. Fifteen minutes left, Zyaac Whitehouse brought down for a penalty. This time Nathan Fox assigned to penalty duties and make no mistake, low to the bottom left corner and drew us level. Going for the win retrospectively was the wrong option, too many men pushed up and we were caught on the break, PT sub Sean Ingram onside and in the clear, there was no chance for Crowe to save it and the steelmen stunned us.

Five points from four is seriously not good enough, only scoring two in the process. We really need Daniel Davies back.

We've made the top half split, still not a mountain away from the summit but it looks highly unlikely. May have to fight now for a top three with Bangor and TNS pulling away.

Cocked up what could have been my first win over TNS. Two footed challenge from James Godbold meant the Saints played the majority of the second half with ten men. Moments later, a crucial penalty was awarded to us in the hope that it would be a game changing goal. Aaron Jenkins is now stripped of his penalty taking duties, THREE MISSES IN A ROW. This was the worst of the bunch, straight down the middle and easy stop for Sam Yates. Apart from that, oddly quiet game where TNS didn't create much at all. Kicking ourselves.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/nJ12fYOEjA6jqsKA9ohrR39efw55OcILbWp4krXY.png

Second of two heavyweight games ended in yet another scoreless draw. This time I was more thankful for it, Bangor City went all gung ho straight from kickoff. Leon Burgess thought he put them in front after ten minutes however the linesman flagged for offside. Keith Palmer went closest for the citizens and was a hair's breadth wide of slotting it in. No major chances for us as we fail to impress yet again. Five clean sheets on the bounce though, silver linings and all that.

Some Boxing Day cheer, putting Llangefni firmly in their place this time around. Aaron Jenkins piledriving an effort home shortly into the second half for the only goal. Nathan Fox's cross-cum-shot deflected off the bar in typical SI highlight fashion, but all in all for the amount of chances created, minimal goalmouth action. Still, ending 2029 on a high with an important win.

Marching into January with a superb sixteen match unbeaten run, however more than a quarter of those games have ended 0-0. Little bit goal-shy at the moment, but defensively rock solid with no goal conceded in over 12 hours.

LEAGUE TABLE * (* failed to screenshot it in time)

Things are tightening up around the league, few sides above us dropping points during the Christmas period. Bangor City still lead the way with 40 points, TNS with 38 but both of those sides have played a game more than third place Bala who move above us on goals scored but both on the same points tally of 33 (including a game in hand). Newtown lie fifth only three points behind but have played a game more too.

Good business for Reus, especially when he's quite injury prone. Personally, I'd have gone for someone better than Jese Rodriguez but the other signings aren't bad at all. That attacking trio of Aubameyang, Lukaku and Mbappe looks menacing.

Last month it was all about our central players, this month the wide players gain the recognition along with Daniel Davies up front. Peter Richards has been influential on that right hand side this season.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/u9XiFYTfVYSIz9VscasJXQxrmBFSY8y6PbfYGKRs.png

As for management, third place in October's manager of the month.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/D7mEieRfqrCJAqeBuBZ0deXJT12Ke8IvIDKmJ0kJ.png

Scoreless draw in the second Flintshire derby of the season to open November up. Stats don't lie, we should've walked away with maximum points. Three clear cut opportunities for us to Airbus' none. Daniel Davies denied by a defender throwing his body in the way of the shot, while the follow up effort from Jared Knight (in for the suspended Jenkins) rippled the side netting. The wingmakers defended like beavers, throwing bodies in everywhere, especially in a late fracas in the penalty area where subs Whitehouse and Alex Wilson both had shots blocked on the line. The absence of Jenkins may have been the difference.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/ARvLN4gqAgYpsjmHtWO5VC8SjKRNd1IH84L3ulKI.png

Leaders Bala suffered their first defeat of the season in their last game, it was our chance to unsettle them further. It was an awful game of football, but did have two key moments. Firstly Bala came on the attack with striker Shane Hannen danced around three of our defenders but failed to hit the target from 16 yards out. The pivotal moment was a penalty awarded to us on the stroke of half time, Ryan Plant pushed and Aaron Jenkins stepped up...James Brown in goal guessed the right way to brilliantly deny it (bet he feel's real good about that one). That's where the action stopped, second half was a damp squib. How much could we rue that miss?

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/SOKrqvd0zUOthFDNCRXaqPvynT7HemqkDSiGrqGn.png

Back to winning ways, Aaron Jenkins the talisman in our side again. Slow burner of a game, only waking up in the 58th minute where we were awarded a penalty when Daniel Davies was bundled over by Kevin Hughes. Jenkins tried to make amends for the Bala pen miss...and missed again! Goalkeeper rooted to the centre, placed it to the right but the inside of the post got in the way of us taking the lead. The miss inspired him two minutes later, Daniel Davies picking him out, trundled into the area and tucked it neatly into the bottom left corner for a deserved lead. The second came from a well weighted pass from Nyall Hooper, who set Jenkins free and this time on his weaker left foot made no mistake. No late equalisers this time.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/skzhLsFj86wGUJd6qKWDBYf6ckX4PlCTrMWeaXPT.png

Porthmadog winless in 12, Connah's Quay unbeaten in 11, thankfully the form book predicted how it would go, but not how busy the ref would be. Ryan Plant's free header connected horribly to sky it over the bar for the first clear cut chance in the game. The combo of Jenkins and Daniel Davies worked another treat for us as Jenkins' ball over the top put Davies through, although hitting the bar from the first effort got another bite and dispatched it at the second attempt. The game was clouded by some really rash challenges, referee John Davies issuing 10 players cards in the entire game. Dave Birch saw red first, picking up a second yellow and followed up by two Porthmadog players; Luke Jones and Graham Coleman also receiving marching orders. Scrappy match in more ways than one.

Ross White is an unfortunate loss, thankfully will return to action soon. Not too many experienced or capable right backs in the ranks.

Another game, another goalless draw. It was quality over quantity with the efforts, Daniel Davies was a handful for the Newtown defense and had two great opportunities in the first half - one off the post and the other kept out marvelously by David Cornell in goal. Newtown never really threatened us, Crowe making routine stops from long range efforts. Zyaac Whitehouse will not want to witness his effort 10 minutes from time again, through on goal, had time and space but ballooned it over the bar. A man short of confidence and composure, it was a sitter. Can't be happy with a draw to be honest.

Daniel Davies a doubt for the next league game and a tough game too...TNS at home.

JD FAW WELSH CUP

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/8wLP2CqKhnazAWGN4QL7vQm9mbejONDVeZKUB5d6.png

More misery in the cups, falling at the first hurdle to Llangefni. Rotated the squad slightly, perhaps it may have been our downfall. First half had no real glimpses of quality but Llangefni looked more likely to score. The home side broke the deadlock early in the second half, Jon Curtis from 30 yards out delivered a piledriver that deflected in off Ryan Plant, stranding Jordan Peagram in goal. Aaron Jenkins equalised swiftly before we fell behind again from Alan Jones, cheap defending allowed him to continue his run and round the keeper. Curtis added the finishing blow for 3-1 but substitute Daniel Davies did make things interesting straight from the kick-off. Didn't apply ourselves and we now lick our wounds as we bow out of the Welsh Cup.

Things are beginning to get interesting, Bala falling apart while Bangor City and TNS are romping ahead. Too many draws are spoiling our title ambitions, or at the very least European football. Next two games are TNS at home and Bangor City away. This should be interesting.

It was a great month for Dave Birch and Aaron Jenkins, fitting into the Welsh Premier team of the month for September following flawless performances both at playmaking and scoring goals.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/pZVXQ2hrY1Ag77fn9QInYJEkzty7ACVdNYDAlpbV.png

A huge win to start off the month, reaping rewards and revenge against Bangor City who're unbeaten in nine. Neither side wanted to lose this game, leading to a cagey first half with no noteworthy highlight. As the hour mark approach, there was a tale of two chances; Bangor at one end with Daniel Williams firing wide from close range, then from the goal kick we surged forward, again picking Peter Richards out on that right hand side who drilled a cross met by Daniel Davies who made no mistake. We exploited the wide areas magnificently, the second coming from the left side as Nathan Fox found Daniel Davies again for the same result. The 4-2-2-1-1DM is working a treat at the moment, liquid football from our boys.

Settling into Wales very nicely.

It was a dull spectacle at Park Avenue, Aberystwyth and Connah's Quay playing out a quite forgettable draw. The match never looked like going despite the number of chances created. 71 minutes elapsed before something decent happened, as we nudged in front from a corner whipped in, headered down by the Aberystwyth defender David Muntari and putting it on a plate for Lewis Bamford in space, had time and serious composure to pick his spot and rifle it home. With that the game bloomed but also instigated an attack for the opponents, switched to a 4-3-3 and broke on the counter for Tony Bitchell to squeeze past Michael Crowe at his near post. He'll be very disappointed that he didn't save that and save the points.

Injuries started to increment, Norman perhaps not a major loss but Nathan Fox on the left wing would be a doubt for our next game with Llandudno. Don't have sufficient backup in that position.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/9uqtszC2P6I5YB9jDnBHmZlxb8dS8wDwCVnABuBq.png

Defense minded Llandundo couldn't prevent us from scoring in a narrow 1-0 victory. Risked Nathan Fox for the game and glad I did, powering a header in from Aaron Jenkins' corner for the only goal of the game. Llandudno didn't pose a threat with their 5-3-2, meaning it was pretty much going into a black and white cul de sac for most of the game. Three more points on the board.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/E5sndj6LNvmHRsxcvJvtz2nNVgosbisnzv4Y0BxA.png

Nathan Fox's replacement ruled out for a few weeks, having only played 28 minutes in the Llandudno game.

AAARRRGHHH!! It happened again! Failing to see the game out against struggling Port Talbot. The surface was greasy for this game but we still posed more of a threat as Daniel Davies tested Daniel Berry in goal for the only effort on target in the first half. It was clear that Port Talbot's defense looked lethargic and afraid every time we went forward, turning up the heat and Daniel Davies hit the inside of the post shortly before the hour mark. It was a hideous goal that put us in front as poor communication between goalkeeper Berry and right back David Wellington let to them coming together to get the ball clear and only found Peter Richards who had a gaping goal to just roll it into the back of the net. Shocker from Port Talbot. I'll admit it was a brilliant equaliser which came in the second of three minutes of added on time, Ryan Edwards from the edge of the D curling one past Crowe to send the home fans into raptures. Didn't deserve it, but serves us right for not closing the game.

Too many yellows meant suspension for Aaron Jenkins who's been integral to our team performances, missing the next game against Airbus UK.
