#783092 World Jacob's Ladder Adventure

Should have known better than to toot my own horn
Changed from my Brexit football into a much fancier 3-4-3, as both our fullbacks suck. Might as well have an extra man up top.

This carreer is heavily inspired by this story (which I just finished reading), which in turn follows this challenge. I have adapted it slightly by updating the tiers to 2024 and adding a few non-FIFA nations to the challenge, which must be cleared first before reaching the FIFA nations.
I imagined that this might take quite a few in-game years and therefore multiple managers, so right now I decided to start with this fella:
As I write this while I'm writing my thesis, I cannot make any promises regarding schedules, but I hope I can play a season before June ends (no promises though). Starting in the Martiniquois 2nd League, here are my boys:
Lots of players - I decided to use the resources I had at hand since we're predicted to top the league (and I think I deactivated first transfer-window moves anyway). I have the second fiddle playing reserves, hoping someone will impress me. By the way, my style of management might be euphemistically described as ‘hands-off’ (I tend to do that at lower levels), so don't expect a full description of my players. However, here's a quick summary:
Our squad doesn't really have any good goalkeeping choices. I have been using Antonin Bernard as the best of a bad bunch but I will be signing a new GK whenever I find a good one available.
Our centre-backs are also similarly weak, but at least we have solid choices (not very exciting though mind you) in Barroilhet and Laval for the wings. In front of them, Fournier and the star of the team, Diego Ferrand, are our main creators, as our centre-mids have to do the dirty work in our 4-4-2. Our striker partnerships have been rather tepid, as I'm still undecided on who the top 2 strikers are.
However, weare doing quite well results-wise, save that premature exit from the cup after penalties. Now we have a 2 week break before the next round of games, good time to slot in a couple friendlies.
Wins here are worth 4 points, draws 2 and losses 1. No idea why, but it certainly confuses my head maths in assessing the table.

This is how the league table looked at the end of the 1st season:

Apparently seasons don't work. Boring. Very well, first team:
Undrið Fótbóltsfelag
I joined in the midst of a relegation battle, and sucessfully moved Undrið up in the table to 8th. They had already been knocked out of the cup by then, so my work was cut out for me: Points, as many as possible.

Yeah it is indeed possible
"A separate question, how does each country decide how the places are allocated? Is it possible to make the FA cup winner qualify for the Champions League, for example?"
Qualification is decided on a ranking system. In my case, the ranking for european competitions is ChampsL-CupWCup-EULeague-EUConfLeag-Intertoto. You can then choose how to rank teams, which are assigned to the highest ranked competition available. So for example, the league winner is assigned the best competition (UCL), the cup winner the 2nd best (CWC; can also be the cup runner-up if the winner has already qualified for the UCL) and so on. Therefore I'm not sure you can have the league and cup winner qualify for both, because the way I do it UCL qualification overrules CWC qualification.
"On this database, I agree with the premise that UEFA's new third-tier competition was an opportunity wasted, but I'd actually go the other way and reduce the prevalence of lower-tier clubs in the Champions league. Realistically, England's 6th best club will beat the best team in Moldova or Andorra, so UEFA are more likely to keep the Champions League for the elites and let the lower-tier competitions be more democratic. Clubs from the smaller nations should be able to qualify for the Champions League by winning a lower-level UEFA competition. Equally, Spanish, English and German clubs should be kept away from the lower tier UEFA competitions. It would just be a distraction for them and could be better to keep those as a 'best of the rest' international club competition for the smaller nations."
My goal was to achieve the opposite, that is, a more level playing field for all nations. Theoretically, in the long-term leagues from other countries would catch up with the top 5 but I'm not sure this happens.
"Another quick question, with your database the cups that each team have qualified for no longer show up on the left hand side of the league table (see screenshot below with the standard database)- how difficult would this be to fix?"
Pretty sure that's impossible - the 3 letters on the side and colour-coding are tied to the coefficient system I believe, and are as broken as the latter, after being edited

Thanks for watching!
In all seriousness, I'm a bit sad I didn't get the chance to stay here for longer. In all my time in Argir I barely had enough time to meet the residents (even though there aren't many around, I'm pretty sure all the playing and coaching staff make up around 5% of the population of the town). Nobody has told me yet how our star Belgian right winger got here and I won't be around to find out.
Huh, that was a lot faster than I expected

I only lasted 7 games. Oops. In all fairness, the results are a bit unfair. But I'm biased, I suppose.
My first league match was against Vikingur and the end result definitely fancied them a lot more than it fancied us. Now I'm no statistical expert, but I believe that when our xG is higher than theirs we played better football and created better opportunities
I might have lied about the "better football" bit, unless you're a fan of hoofing balls forward and defending all match, WBA style. But if you ignore the 3 goals conceded in 10 minutes we played remarkably well.
The next 2 matches, against IF and HB, were boring defeats (for us of course, I bet their managers were pleased) in which we showed no signs whatsoever of being able to get at least one point.
Following this we did get our first point, thanks to a 2 goal draw with Skála, which I was quite happy with, especially since we got a last-minute goal. But then again, the first goal of the match was in the 78th minute so I guess all goals were last-minute goals in a way.
After this match we were rewarded with a trip to Malta to get away from our small, cold island to play some football in a small, warm island. We had beaten Mosta FC 2-1 at home and we could really use those £50k given out to the winner. However, for once, the result fancied us a lot more than it should've.
It do be disappointing to lose after scoring our 2nd, which gave us a two-goal cushion, but fair play to them I guess.
After this, we had an absolutely must-win game with fellow relegation contenders TB (I love Faroese club names, just two letters. Thank God I didn't have to pronounce Tvøroyrar Bóltfelag). Such a crucial game treated me to an excruciating piss-take:
"We put out a fantastic performance according to our xG"
1 missed pen
1 disallowed goal
This was when I became sure we were going down. Thanks, FM Gods.
