#380162 Tranmere Rovers - Who needs a lemon when we've got Mellon!
MrTini23
Tranmere boss Micky Mellon has spoken of his excitement ahead of the new National League season.
The game away at Bromley will be Micky's first game in charge of Tranmere following his move from Shrewsbury over the summer, with many pundits tipping Tranmere for automatic promotion to League Two.
Speaking to a packed press conference ahead of the game at Hayes Lane, Mellon said:
"I'm like a kid on Christmas Eve right now. I can't wait to get the season up and running. Being back at Tranmere feels really special and I'm sure it will be even more special when 3 o'clock comes around tomorrow afternoon."
"We have put a lot of preparation in during preseason so we need to make sure that we go to Bromley and put on a good performance. The players and I are aware that we are being tipped for promotion and it's up to us to not let it go to our heads. We know what we need to do and that's go out and win football matches."

Tranmere have today announced three new signings, with all three players arriving on a free transfer
The three men who have arrived at Prenton Park are midfielder Taylor Tombides and defenders Frazer Shaw and Afolabi Coker and they were unveiled today in the Belmont Suite at Tranmere's Prenton Park ground alongside a visibly happy Micky Mellon.
The first signing is Afolabi Coker. Coker (pictured) is a 19 year old centre back who is yet to make a senior career appearance having previously been on the books of Leeds (where he started his career) and Norwich.
Frazer Shaw is a 21 year old left back who began his career at West Ham before earning himself a move to Leyton Orient last season (following spells at Billericay and Dulwich Hamlet. Shaw played 25 games in League Two for Orient before being released in the summer.
The final signing sees Australian Taylor Tombides join the club. The 20 year old began his career at West Ham alongside his brother Dylan, who tragically died of cancer in 2014. After leaving West Ham, the midfielder had a season with Hull before moving on to Canvey Island, where he made 11 appearances.

Tranmere Rovers are delighted to announce that West Brom defender Jack Fitzwater has signed a deal to join the Club until the end of the season on loan.
Fitzwater is a product of the West Bromwich Albion academy and was named academy player of the year for the 2014–15 season. He is still yet to make a senior appearance for the Baggies.
Manager Micky Mellon said of the signing: "Jack is the type of player we’ve been looking for. He is someone we have kept a close eye and I’m delighted that we are able to bring him into the Club for the season.
"He will provide competition for places in the defensive area and is hungry to do well to help us achieve our goal this season of promotion. He is a strong lad, a hard worker and I’m sure he will do well for us during his time here. I’d like to thank Tony Pulis and West Brom for allowing him to join us."

Portsmouth's winger Ben Tollitt has today joined Tranmere for the rest of the season on loan.
Tollitt began his career at Everton but was released without making an appearance at Goodison Park. From there, he moved to Widnes where he scored 18 goals in 43 games. After a brief stint at Skelmersdale in 2014, Tollitt signed a one year deal at Fratton Park.
Tollitt made his first Portsmouth appearance in an EFL cup home win against Derby County and scored his first goal in a League Two game against York in November.
Tranmere manager Micky Mellon spoke of his delight at acquiring the services of Tollitt.
"I'm delighted to have Ben here at the club. Ben is someone who has been on my radar for a while after seeing his performances for Portsmouth last season. He's a local lad having started his career at Everton and he's raring to go out and impress."

Mike Jackson says he is delighted to be back at the Club and teaming up again with Micky Mellon in the dugout.
The duo spent more than two years working together successfully at Shrewsbury Town, and Jackson says that their knowledge of the Club and passion should be useful.
He told Tranmere PlayerHD: "There's no magic wand for someone to come in and just get straight to promotion, but Micky has a passion and cares about what he does and I have noticed that all the staff here are the same and really keen to do well. I think it does help with us being ex-players here. But you look around the youth set-up and the coaches are mostly former players and it's much more than just a job here.
"We know the expectations, the fanbase so we know what we're coming into. You can achieve a hell of a lot through mentality alone and that can build confidence and that's something we will be working on."
Jackson says that the squad can also feed off the passion of the Super White Army. Having sat and watched the Tranmere from the stands during the 2015/16 season, Jackson says the players can feed off the energy of the supporters.
"I was here for the Wrexham game last season and there was a great atmosphere. Every time we got into the final third they (the fans) were up, and they're passionate supporters here and they know their football. We have to use those fans to our advantage."

Tranmere chairman Mark Palios says he doesn’t have to set new manager Micky Mellon specific targets because the expectations of his role are obvious.
Founder members of Division Three North, Tranmere finally surrendered their Football League status after 94 years in 2015 and after finishing just outside the play-offs last season, Gary Brabin, the man originally tasked with getting Rovers out of the National League was sacked last month.
Asked if Mellon, who rejoined the club after two spells as a player, had been told he had to deliver promotion, Palios said:
“I don’t set specific targets like that and people might find that strange. It’s fairly obvious – we have to get promoted and should get promoted. When you set targets you don’t set them blindly. It’s not black and white, if you don’t achieve the target then you go again. There’s a target there that needs to be hit and if there’s a reason as to why we didn’t achieve it and it’s justifiable then you take a view. The target for us is promotion and always has been.”
While Palios is obviously determined to win back a place in the Football League as quickly as possible, he is also building an infrastructure at Prenton Park for the club to flourish in whatever the vagaries of results on the pitch.
He said: “If we don’t win promotion this year we go again next year and that’s the purpose of building the club off the field. We can go again year in, year out, and that’s where the benefits are seen. People complain that we’re not investing in the team, we’re investing off the pitch, but that’s just plain wrong. They’re not mutually exclusive, we’re doing both. The point is if we just invested in the short-term on the pitch I’m not sure you’d get back on your investment, pound for pound. We’ve got a good squad of players and I believe we’ve got a good manager.”

Micky Mellon says he is delighted to be back at Prenton Park after being announced as the Club's new manager earlier this week.
Mellon had two previous spells at the Club as a player and says that affection he built during that time helped him make the decision to return to Wirral.
He said: "It's great to be back at a Club that I have so much affection for. There are still a lot of familiar faces here. A lot of things have changed, but it is still a fantastic football club. The most important thing to do is to win the next game."
"I never looked at this as dropping down. To come to a Club that I have such high regard for is the exciting part for me. A lot of ex-players have been contacting me all saying 'get in there and win games' because they also have so much affection for the Club. I have a great affection for the Club and I want to win games here."

The appointment of Micky Mellon as Tranmere boss has triggered an influx of staff members, with 5 former players rejoining the club.
Coming with Micky from Shrewsbury are Mike Jackson and Danny Coyne, who have been named as assistant manager and goalkeeping coach respectively. Jackson made 84 appearances over 2 years at the club back in 2004 and has been Mellon's assistant since the Scot joined Shrewsbury. Coyne also had two spells at Tranmere, making over 200 appearances between the sticks at Prenton Park.
Also returning to the club are former right back Robbie Stockdale and former striker Simon Haworth. Stockdale rejoins the club as a scout having previously worked at Sunderland and Haworth joins in a coaching role.
Perhaps the most shocking of all is the return of former manager John Aldridge. Aldridge was manager back in the early 2000's, leading Tranmere to the Worthington cup final against Leicester at Wembley, alongside many other impressive cup runs. Aldrige rejoins the club as the new Director of Football.

Former Tranmere Rovers player Micky Mellon has been appointed as the club's new manager after leaving League One Shrewsbury Town.
As a player, midfielder Mellon had two spells at Prenton Park. Either side of a two-year stint with Burnley, he made 205 appearances and scored 10 goals for Rovers and was a popular figure amongst the Tranmere faithful. As a manager, the Scotsman has had a great deal of success since taking his first role back in September 2008 with Fleetwood Town.
He took over with the side sat at the bottom of the Conference North and lifted them to 8th in his first season before leading them to promotion via the play-offs the following year. In 2010-11, Mellon then took Fleetwood to the Conference play-offs, losing out to AFC Wimbledon, before helping them to the title and into the Football League for the first time the following season with 103 points.
After leaving Fleetwood with the Cod Army in 4th position in League Two, Mellon spent 18 months working as assistant to David Flitcroft in the Championship at Barnsley before taking over at Shrewsbury Town at the start of the 2014-15 campaign where he guided them to promotion back into League One.
Tranmere Chairman Mark Palios said: “I am delighted to bring Micky back to Tranmere Rovers for a third time. His track record speaks for itself. He already has a number of promotions to his name and we are confident he will add to that record once more at Prenton Park. We are especially pleased to bring in a manager currently managing in League 1 and who sees the potential in the Club."
Mellon, who has previously managed Fleetwood to the National League title, takes over from former manager Gary Brabin, who was sacked at the end of the 2015/16 season following Tranmere's failure to make the national league playoffs.

Garbutt Signs New Deal
12th July 2015 by Andy Lewis
Luke Garbutt has committed his long-term future to Everton by signing a new contract at Goodison Park.
The 22-year-old left-back has agreed a new five-year deal, pledging himself to the Club until the end of the 2019/20 season.
Garbutt, a product of the Everton Academy, made his Premier League debut for the Club as a 20-year-old at Southampton in the 2013/14 season, replacing Leighton Baines. He continued his career progression during the 2014/15 season, making 10 more first-team appearances including four in the Premier League, and a sense of genuine belonging and real ambition underpinned his decision to stay at Goodison.
"It's an honour to commit my long-term future to Everton. I’ve been made to feel very welcome at the Club since I signed my scholarship six years ago. Over the years, I have grown to have an affinity with the Club and I feel a sense of belonging here. Under the manager, the future looks bright and positive and I want to be a part of that. It is a great Club to be a part of and the staff and supporters have been great with me from day one."
"Last season was great for me in continuing my development, my personal highlight being the Europa League adventure as I gained a lot of experience in those games playing against top quality opposition. Everything we went through last season and the experience we gained as a group will only make us stronger as a team ahead of the new season. And with all the young players we’ve got such as Rom, Ross and Stonesy - all of them key players, too, the future of the Club couldn't be more promising."

Naismith makes Tottenham move
12th July 2015
Tottenham have finally completed their pursuit of Everton's Steven Naismith, capturing the Scotland international for a fee of 13.5 million pounds.
Scotland international, Naismith, was a regular member of the Everton starting eleven last season and played 39 times, scoring on 8 occasions. Tottenham's interest in securing the services of Naismith was made apparent early on in the summer with Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino stating that he 'liked the look' of Naismith.
BBC Sport managed to catch up with both Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettinoo and Steven Naismith as they left Tottenham's training ground earlier today.
Naismith said: "I am delighted to have finally signed for Tottenham. As I've said before Tottenham are a great club with great fans and I am really excited to get started. I know I will have to fight for my place here but I think that will make me a better footballer. It's been a few years since Tottenham won a trophy so hopefully we can win everything there is to win this season and make the fans proud."
Mauricio Pochettino added: "I am very happy that Steven has decided to join us and I'd like to welcome him to the club. Steven is a terrific player and should definitely push for a starting place in the side. He's an Scotland international and his performances at Everton have shown us just what he is capable of. I would not have bought him if I didn't think he was ready to partner Harry (Kane) upfront. I look forward to seeing the two upfront together."

Juventus eye England international
Last Updated: 11th July 2015
Reports have surfaced stating Italian giants Juventus are lining up a 25 million pound bid for England international left back Leighton Baines.
Everton's England international left back Leighton Baines could become Juventus' first summer signing with manager Massimiliano Allegri reportedly lining up a £25 million bid for the 29 year old. It is believed that Everton are keen to retain the services of Baines and only a bid of up to £40 million would convince them to sell one of their key players.
According to a source close to the player, a move to Italian giants Juventus would be a hard one to turn down.
"Don't get it wrong, it's not about money for Leighton and it never will be for him. He's just not that type of person" said the source.
"However, if a big club like Juventus come in for you it's always going to be hard to say no. Juventus are afterall one of the most recognised teams in Europe. Leighton is extremely happy at Everton at the moment and he's looking forward to European nights returning to Goodison Park, but if Juventus are serious about trying to get him, it's something he's definitely got to think about."

MARTINEZ PROMISES EVERTON IMPROVEMENT
7th July 2015
Everton manager Roberto Martinez has promised an improvement in his Everton side after his side finished a disappointing 11th in the 2014/15 Barclays Premier League table.
The Merseyside club endured a difficult season last season, often occupying a place just above the relegation zone. It wasn't until a run of 5 wins in 6 games over the months of March and April that Roberto Martinez's side managed to open up a substantial gap from the relegation zone. The blue half of Merseyside will no doubt look back on results at Goodison Park, such as the 3-2 loss to Crystal Palace and the 2-0 loss to Sunderland, to find where improvements can be made. Improvements that manager Roberto Martinez has promised to make.
Speaking to BBC Sport earlier today Martinez said: "I will be brutally honest with you, last season was not good enough from our point of view. To miss out on European qualification was bad enough but to not finish in the top half is an absolute disgrace for a club as big as this. Everton are not a bottom half team and this season we will be looking to put that right and finish in the top half where we belong. With all due respect to the likes of Crystal Palace and Swansea, we should not be finishing below them in the table, we are a lot better than that."
"The fans did not deserve the level of performance they received from us last season, especially at Goodison Park and I have to apologise for that. Only winning 7 out of 19 home games in the Premier League is not going to get you into the top half of the table and this is what we will need to address for the coming season. We need to make Goodison Park into a fortress, a place where teams fear visiting. Our fans are the best fans in the Premier League by far and the support they give us week in week out is nothing short of phenomenal. It's time we repaid them for that support."

BENITEZ RULES OUT LIVERPOOL RETURN
Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has ruled out a return to the Anfield club after leaving his role as Chelsea interim manager.
Benitez was previously manager of the Anfield club between the years of 2004 and 2010 and had a number of success at Liverpool. In May 2005, Benitez became the second Liverpool manager to win the Champions League in their first season in charge after his side beat AC Milan on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw which saw Liverpool overturn a 3-0 half time deficit. The season after, he won the FA Cup, again on penalties as Liverpool beat West Ham after a 3-3 draw. Liverpool's best performance in the Premier League under Benitez was in 2008-09 when they finished second behind Manchester United.
The Spaniard left Liverpool in 2010 and returned to English football last season when took over as Chelsea manager. This coming after a short spell at Italian club Inter Milan. The reaction to the appointment of Benitez was hostile at best due to Rafa's previous connections with Liverpool. Benitez left Chelsea at the end of the season and is currently out of work.
Speaking to BBC Sport, the Spaniard ruled out a return to Anfield at the present time but admitted he would like to return when the time is right. "Obviously I'd love to be Liverpool manager again one day but at the moment the time is not right. Liverpool is a club I hold close to my heart and I always keep up with their results but I'm not ready to return just yet."

INCE INTERESTED IN LIVERPOOL JOB
Current Blackpool boss and former Liverpool captain Paul Ince has revealed that he would snap at the chance of managing former club Liverpool if he was given the chance.
Ince, 45, played for Liverpool between the years 1997 and 1999 and was a regular in the Liverpool midfield. He joined the Anfield club from Italian side Inter Milan and was named captain for the 1997/98 season. His first season with Liverpool was trophy less but became a fan favorite after scoring crucial goals such as equalizers at home to rivals Everton and away at Tottenham, the latter being an overhead kick. Ince's second season was again trophy less and at the end of it, Ince was placed on the transfer list by the manager Gerard Houllier. He left Anfield to join Middlesbrough for ÂŁ1million.
As a manager, Ince has had a small amount of success but has generally been average. He started at Macclesfield and managed to save them from relegation on the last day of the season. A spell at MK Dons followed where he won the Football League Trophy and earned promotion to League One. Ince's only previous experience of Premier League management was at Blackburn in 2008. During his time at Ewood Park, Ince only managed 3 wins in 17 games and was sacked in December.
In an interview on Sky Sports News, Ince revealed he'd love the chance to manage Liverpool. "I'm not going to lie, I'd love the chance to manage Liverpool. I loved my two years there and I'd love to go back there. The fans there are among the best I've ever seen and no offence to Blackpool and their fans, there is no set of fans like them. I also feel like I've got unfinished business in the Premier League after Blackburn and I want to prove myself as a top flight manager."

O'NEILL LAUGHS OFF LIVERPOOL LINK
Former Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has laughed off rumours that he is to return to management by taking the reigns of Liverpool.
O'Neill, 61, was sacked as Sunderland manager earlier this year in March with Paulo Di Canio replacing him at the Stadium Of Light. Prior to his stint as manager of Sunderland, O'Neill had managed Aston Villa, Celtic and Leicester City.
Speaking to BBC Sport earlier today, O'Neill said: "There is no way I'm joining Liverpool and I have no idea where that has come from. It wasn't long ago that I was managing in the Premier League with Sunderland and we all know how that ended. I have no desire to return to football management in the near future and I'm happy spending time away from football with my wife."
"Obviously being linking with a club with the stature of Liverpool is very flattering but I'm just not interested. The stress of being a Premier League manager has been with me for a long time and I just want to have a break away from the game for a little while."

RODGERS RESIGNS FROM LIVERPOOL POST
Northern Irish manager Brendan Rodgers has resigned from his job as Liverpool boss after only one season of management at the Anfield club.
A club statement from Liverpool said: "Unfortunately the reign of Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool manager has not worked out the way we hoped. Brendan was very vocal about wanting funds for new signings but in the current day and age the football club can simply not afford the sum of money that Brendan was asking. He gave the club an ultimatum saying that he would resign if he wasn't given the funds so unfortunately he is no longer manager of Liverpool Football Club."
"No man is bigger than Liverpool Football Club and its fans. Liverpool is a club for the community and we will not be held to ransom over transfer funds. The search for a new Liverpool manager will begin immediately and we will be looking to have a new manager in place by the end of the current month."
BBC Sport managed to catch up with Brendan Rodgers as he left Anfield after handing in his notice to the Liverpool board.
"Obviously I'm extremely disappointed to be leaving Liverpool after just one season but my position had clearly become untenable. I always believed in my ability to do the job but with the lack of transfer funds made available, it's simply not possible to match the expectations of the board. What they are looking for is a miracle worker and that is not me. I wish Liverpool Football Club all the best in the future."

Co-Chairmen reaction
6th May 2013
By Lee Hooton
Following Everton's win over Arsenal which saw them crowned Premier League champions, Evertonfc.com caught up with co-chairmen Duncan Ferguson and Bill Kenwright to get their reactions.
"I was crying in my seat in the stands" said Bill Kenwright. "I've been at Everton now for 24 years and this is the proudest I've ever been. Noone gave us a hope of winning the title at the start of the season and we were laughed at for just dreaming of getting into the top 4. How nice it is to prove everyone wrong and I would personally like to thank David Moyes for the excellent job he has done over the past 11 years."
Everton cult hero Ferguson, was in a similar state of mind following the Premier League win. "I must admit, I was on the verge of tears. When I was here as a player, we almost got relegated from this league back in 1998 so to come back as a member of the board fifteen years later and see us win it is astounding. Credit has to go for Moyes for the superb job he has done. He is by far one of the best managers out there today and I'm honored to have worked with him both at board room level and as a player."

With Everton being confirmed as Premier League champions on Saturday following the 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates, Evertonfc.com ventured into the city center to find out what the fans thought.
Dave Lewis (32): "Easily the best day of my life to date. Just seeing the looks on the faces of all the Liverpool fans when we were confirmed champions was just brilliant. To think, all the crap they gave us back in 1998 when we almost went down and we end up winning the Premier League before them."
Matt Gillespie (22): "A big thanks should go out to David Moyes. The work he has done since he came to Everton has been absolutely brilliant. He's got the players working as a team which is something we've never had before and the squad we have is one of the best in Everton history."
Mick Holloway (70): "I was alive when Everton won quite a few of their titles in the old first division. I have to admit, with all these foreign billionaire owners coming in, I'd never thought I'd see the day again. David Moyes has come up with some form of miracle to win us the Premier League title. He should be knighted.."
Mark Lloyd (35): "I was 10 when Everton last won the title so to see them win it again is great. David has done wonders but most of the credit should go to the players. They have played so well this season and I hope they have a high bonus for winning the league."

Everton crowned champions
5th May 2013
By John Warrington
David Moyes is being hailed as a miracle worker after his Everton side were finally crowned Premier League champions following a 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates.
Knowing they only needed a point to be champions, Everton took the game to Arsenal at the Emirates and won 2-1, thanks to a brace from striker Charlie Austin. The three points means that second place Man City can no longer mathematically catch Everton, giving them their first league title since 1987. It is also the 10th time the Merseyside club have lifted the English top division title.
In an interview with Sky Sports News, an emotional David Moyes spoke of his pride at winning the title with Everton: "This is by far the best moment of my career to date. When I came to Everton in 2002, I never in my wildest dreams expected to see this day. I've never felt so proud in my life and I want to thank the players, staff and the fans for making this all possible. It's great that we have been able to give something back to the fans as they are by far the best in England."

Three questions with Moyes
25th April 2013
By Lee Hooton
With the Merseyside derby against Liverpool coming up and the Premier League title within touching distance, Evertonfc.com sat down with David Moyes with three questions.
Hello David, The first question, during your reign as Everton manager we have never had much success over Liverpool. How important is it to beat Liverpool do you think?.
That's something I've been looking to rectify. Sure, there are eighteen other teams in the league so if we lose to Liverpool it is not the be all and end all, but beating Liverpool is very important. For us and the fans, it's all about pride. There is nothing better than beating your local rivals. Fans want to go into work on a Monday morning and gloat about their team beating Liverpool and we aim to give them that chance. It's arguably the most important fixture of the season.
The Premier League title is within sight, what's the secret this season? Why have we been so good?
One word Lee, consistency. If you look at the past few seasons, we have always been really strong in the later part of the season and had a terrible start. This season we had a good start and kept it up. There has only been one game where we can say that we were truly poor and that was against Chelsea. Other than that we have been excellent, working as a unit and getting results.
Finally, we're through to the FA Cup final to play Brighton. Are you confident of winning?
As manager I have got to be confident. if I'm not confident about anything neither will the players. Of course we are helped by playing Championship opposition but it's important that we don't get complacent. Brighton won't be an easy team to beat and we are going to have to play well to beat them.
Thanks for your time David and good luck against Liverpool.

You're right about that. Glad I took the chance on him.
