To be fair the only things that are much more expensive in Australia than in Britain are rent/property, alcohol and clothes.
The rest isn't vastly different.
eg. A normal pub meal - steak and chips for example, is about 7/8 quid. Supermarkets aren't hugely more expensive either.
The below shows the price differences between London and Sydney, not a huge difference. 10% higher on average but the wage is 45% higher on average.

Do you think City care how many people turn up?
If 47k people buy tickets, they get money whether they turn up or not.
So if 60k people want to buy tickets you may as well expand the stadium to allow it, even if they're not all to go.
Quite clearly the demand is there.
