#221131 bmg's British Steel Challenge

I really dont see how they came to that conclusion. This squad certainly isn't the 7th best in the league, but we shall see who is correct as the season is now getting underway!

My first competitive game in this challenge was against Limerick in the EA Sports Cup. Before the game, Limericks manager said that it would be an easy victory for his team. Lets just say I said something along the lines of "Don't be silly old chap" and leave it at that!
We had a great start to the game and we were rewarded for that when Gary Delaney put us 1-0 up in the first quarter of an hour. But then it all went wrong when Wall got a straight red after 29 minutes. As expected, Limerick got back into the game just before half time. They then took the lead in the second half and it looked like they were going to hold on for a 2-1 win until Nolan popped up with a late goal to send the game into extra time. Unfortunatly being a man down meant that our players were quite tired and Limerick went 3-2 up. Another red card for us in the 109th minute pretty much ended the game. Overall, it was a good display, despite 2 red cards.

Friendly Results
I thought i'd test our squad out against top tier oppostion. We did well in all 4 games, giving Cork, Shamrock, Drogheda and Limerick good games and seemed to match them stride for stride. We can be pleased that none of them were able to keep a clean sheet against us. The last friendly was just a game to test things and boost morale a bit. Our first competitive game of the season is at home to Premier Division side Limerick in the EA Sports Cup 1st round.

The media don't rate our chances very well. If our friendly results are anything to go by, then i'm sure we wont end up 7th!

Thanks! Just had a look at yours, didn't realise I wasn't the only one attempting this. I thought England would be a tricky place to start, which is why I went for Ireland. The difference in quality between the bottom and top teams isn't too big, so I thought i'd get going here and tick ROI and NI off as quickly as possible. Gendo took 51 seasons to complete this, so that is my target to beat!

1st Signing
We were in desperate need of an attacking midfielder. Luckily I found this guy on the free agents list and snapped him up straight away. His best position is MC, but I plan on playing him at AMC.
His name is Ryan Coombes by the way, I just noticed that I missed his name out of the screenshot.

I wanted a hard task, so this was perfect. I will make 51 seasons my target and see if I can beat it!
Thanks!

The rules state I can start unemployed or begin at a club. I have chosen the latter and went to Ireland for my first attempt.
I chose Wexford Youths because they were the only team in the Irish 2nd tier I hadn't heard of before. It really was that simple.
I would update you on the clubs history, but it literally has none. The only thing worth noting is that they came runner up to Derry CIty in the EA Sports Cup back in 2008. Hopefully when I come to leave, they'll have a few more trophies in the cabinet!
We have a decent squad with a lot of good young players. This is helpful as the board have already told me that they want to see young players coming through and breaking into the first team. I have to say that managing a team with "Youths" in its name is already confusing me. I keep thinking i'm looking at the youth team when i'm actually looking at the first team.
But without a doubt, this guy is our best player. Apparently he is already considered to be an icon at the club, despite being only 24 years old. Will need him to be at his best this season to help give me a good start to this challenge.

I fancy a hard challenge and I got one! As stated here, I am going to try and win every trophy available in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland & Republic of Ireland. Its the first time i've ever attempted this challenge, so I shall look forward to the journey ahead!
The Manager
I have based my manager around myself and made him as realistic as possible. I know random bits of German and Italian, but not enough for me to class them as an additional language.
As the rules state, I have started with no coaching qualifications and a sunday league reputation. That has left me with these attributes.
I forgot to screenshot the details on the game when I was setting it up. If you did the same, don't worry. Just click on the FM button at the top and then go on "Game Status" so you can find this:
I will leave a table of trophies won here to make it easy to see what i've won (eventually). Photos/links to proof will also be included when the table gets updated.

#219978 Overtaking Brazil
bmg033
Its an idea i've had for a while, but sadly not the patience to actually attempt it. So I thought i'd put it out there and maybe you can be the one to conquer it?
What is the challenge?
Brazil have won more World Cups than any other nation, 5 to be exact. You must lead a country with no previous World Cup victories to their name, and win the famous trophy 6 times to overtake Brazil and become the most successful nation in the world.
World Cup Winners List
5 - Brazil
4 - Italy & Germany
2 - Argentina & Uruguay
1 - England, France & Spain
Rules
- You must win all of your titles with the same nation.
- Your selected nation must have never won the World Cup before.
- No use of the in game editor.
- Your reputation and coaching badges can be set to whatever you like.
- You can start unemployed or go straight into a job, its your choice.
- If you were to lose at a World Cup and Brazil go on to get their 6th crown, then you must go on for 7 wins to beat the challenge.
- Got sacked? No worries. As long as the country you were managing don't go on to win a World Cup without you, you can still take the job back at a later date and continue. But if they do win it without you, then you must find another nation or restart the challenge.
Suggested Teams
These are the teams I would look at if I were to actually attempt it. You don't have to use them, but they would probably give you the best chance.
- Holland
- Portugal
- Belgium
- Croatia
- Colombia

Yeah, it was close but Barcelonas defending was just too good in the end. We never really split them open so a lot of those shots were from distance. Max Kruse is now 29 and he will be 32 when his current deal expires. There were moments when I thought an incoming transfer request was imminent, but in the end I got him to commit until 2020.
At the start of the season just gone, there was a bit of a disagreement between me and the board over transfer funds. My contract also only had 1 year left and they kept asking me to extend my deal. In the end I decided not to sign the new contract they had offered and went all out to win the league as a last hurrah before moving on. Thankfully I achieved that and had a very good run in the CL too. I didn't expect to complete it so soon, I thought maybe it would take at least 5 years due to the presence of Bayern.
So my contract expired on 30th June 2017, not being renewed. Was good times!

Surprisingly it didn't go to Kruse this year. Johnson was fantastic though and had been attracting interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.
Best Eleven
Pepe and Sorensen should switch places and so should Herrera and Cleverley. But at least it picked the right players this time.

(So good he deserves his own post)
The legend that is Max Kruse finished as the leagues top scorer. In fact, he got as many as Bayerns Robert Lewandowski and Jackson Martinez put together!
Overall look at his stats this season. Superb stuff.

Going to make it a lot shorter, don't want to lose it all again!
Champions League Semi Final
The first leg was a good game. We went there to win, but in all honesty I just hoped that we would take back a scoreline that would give us a chance of beating them at our place. We did just that with a 1-1 draw. Ayew had given us the lead before Messi equalised. Pique would miss the return leg through suspension and although Johnson went off injured, he would be fine as he played our next league game just 3 days later.
So with the score level, it was all to play for at Borussia Park. We took the lead through Tonny Vilhena but once again they equalised just before half time through Piques replacement Marc Bartra. We battered their defence for the rest of the game but couldn't find a way through. Extra time it is. 2 knackered sets of players produced next to nothing in the additional 30 minutes, so the dreaded penalties had to make an appearence.
Barcelona went first with Messi. We were without Kruse who had to go off, Angelo Henriquez took his place.
FCB 1: Messi scores (1-0)
BMG 1: Herrera misses (1-0)
FCB 2: Neymar scores (2-0)
BMG 2: Henriquez scores (2-1)
FCB 3: Iniesta scores (3-1)
BMG 3: Vilhena scores (3-2)
FCB 4: Samper misses (3-2)
BMG 4: Johnson misses (3-2)
FCB 5: Bartra scores (4-2)
Barcelona win 4-2 on penalties
It was an amazing journey, I never expected to get this far. But we can be very proud of ourselves because despite the wealth and superior talent of the other teams, our spirit and determination helped us surprise everyone. I guess it just wasn't meant to be this time.
Bundesliga Title Push
So that CL exit allowed us to 100% concentrate on league matters.
First up was a home game against Hannover. They had been awful all season and had recently been beaten 8-0 by Bayern. Bayern were at Dortmund and if they lost and we won, the title would pretty much be ours. We completed our side of the deal with a convincing 5-0 win and a Kruse treble, but Bayern survived an almighty battering at Dortmund and came away with a 0-0 draw to keep the title race going.
Our next game was away at our fierce rivals Koln. A win here would give us the title, what an opportunity this is. It turned out to be a typical derby game which had more cards than shots on target. In fact there was only 3 clear cut chances all game, but all of them went in. First up was Max Kruse to give us the lead. Shortly afterwards, Bayern took the lead against Hertha in their game. But then Koln hit back and we went in at half time 1-1. Into the last 45 and we heard news that Bayern goalscorer Alonso had been sent off. Just as that was happening, mighty Max did what he does best and put us 2-1 up. The Koln players decided to spent the rest of the game practicing their kickboxing moves. Its dangerous but as long as they don't try and score, I don't care what they do because this scoreline is what we need. In the end, it was also what we got as we claimed the league title in the back yard of our rivals!
Pretty much my reaction!
The season finished off with a 2-1 home win agaisnt Schalke. Its looking like it may well be my last game as BMG boss, so I thought i'd give Europa League final 2015 hero, Janis Blaswich, a game in goal. In the end, Dortmund were lucky to hang on to 3rd place from Leverkusen.
One last look at that glorious league table!

1st leg is at the Nou Camp so we desperatly need to come away from it with some kind of hope that we can beat them in the 2nd leg. Preferably avoiding a spanking would be nice.
It'll be tough, but as we found out in the Europa League, we can upset the odds!
Hopefully, we face our fierce local rivals Koln in one of the last couple of games. I'm sure they'll be up for giving us a tough time.
