I think what you need to remember with this is that the 'formation' is where your team are WITHOUT the ball, yet the roles are more about with the ball and can completely change the shape of your team, leaving them open (for example) to counter...

I had this recently when I installed some kits. Close the game and then right click it on steam and click 'Verify Game File Integrity' (I think that's its name, maybe a varying combo of those words) then reload the game

Ended up finishing 2nd, 5 points adrift, despite not losing in the last 31 games.
No other awards, which I believe leaves me on 25 points.
