Apparently £33m for Shaw on a 5-year deal worth £160k pw.

Don't expect the wages to be that much but there is no way in hell that Shaw is £33m good, let alone wages of anything close to maybe half that 160k, at a push. United have been absolutely mugged if those figures are remotely close.

£27m + add ons according to anyone thats not the Mirror and those wages are from goal.

Considering we were quoted £20m+ for Baines (who Shaw is arguably already comparable to) and that Shaw is 10 years younger than him we'll end up getting decent value for money.

BBC and Sky reporting it's done.

Exciting signings. Both a gamble, especially Shaw, but he progresses well then he'll definitely be worth the money. Great prospect.

More to come hopefully, as well as more to leave.

Comparable in a fashion such as "Shaw is nowhere near as good as Baines"

Baines is amongst the most over-rated players in the country.

Still miles better than Shaw though. Shaw is a great prospect, but in no way is he a brilliant player right now

For Baines being 'miles ahead of him' Shaw still beat him to the team of the year this season, rightly or wrongly, it's far closer than you're making out.

That's how we're judging talent? So Lallana is better than Silva? Or at least close in terms of ability

Lallana and Shaw are good players but Southampton have done incredibly well to get £55M out of them.

Its not how we're judging ability, but I don't think you can sustain an argument that Shaw had a significantly worse season than Baines last season. At 18, when neither of them play in any competition to judge them outside of England, theres not much else you can say other than the fact he's performed comparably to him in his career so far and has the potential to be even better.

Anyway, you should speak to Liverpool fans more. Lallana is world class and the best player in the league.

Jay Rodriguez has to be the gold standard in that regard. English enough to be english, Spanish sounding enough to demand a premium.

It's slightly depressing to know that United's time in the shitter will only last that one season.

That is a sickening transfer fee for a 18-year old left back...

He could have 15 years of top-level football ahead of him. Not so "sickening" when you take that in mind.

So I think that makes Luke Shaw the 4th most expensive defender in history.

It's a ridiculous fee but if he lives up to his potential it'll be a bargain.

Left back sorted for 15 years or a hefty transfer fee when he goes elsewhere.

Wouldn't quite say a "bargain", at least not in terms of wages.

He'll be like 23 when his contract runs out, and given the ridiculous wage he's reportedly been given now, Utd will have to substantially increase that further to keep him if he does indeed become one of the best defenders in the world by then.

Would be prime age to run down his contract and join Chelsea on a free.

I heard £100k, mainly to keep Chelsea away since he supports them.

I actually feel sorry for Büttner. He was never good enough and was always going to find it extremely difficult to get a game. Fair play to him for leaving though in search of regular football rather than sitting around picking up a pay cheque!!

Has anyone actually considered what might happen if Shaw doesn't turn out to be as good as everyone thinks he is? Maybe he won't be "nailed down" for 10-15 years like everyone says he is

The way he spoke in his interview was as if he was just using Utd to get better/experience and then move on at some point anyway imo.

There's only 2 places to go after Utd though in reality, Real or Barca. That's if he's good of course. Although he is a Chelsea fan so maybe he just doesn't want to commit his whole career to Utd in case there's a possibility of joining them in the future. Their shite treatment of young players and refusal to pay Utd's wages were the reasons he didn't go to them this summer

Obviously. It's a transfer there's always risk. Clubs have spent £30m+ on players to have them flop frequently. No more likely here than with any other one.

Our "shite" treatment of younger players has nothing to do with why Shaw didn't join, it was simply financial. £30m odd in a transfer fee alone, combine that with wages most likely in excess of £100k p/w, it simply isn't value for money when Chelsea has more pressing areas to address, while we seemingly more interested in Filipe Luis as a left back. Who is going to cost half the wages that Shaw would, while being in his prime. And to be fair, we could probably not even invest in a left back at all and make do with Azpi as first choice with Bertrand or PvA as a backup.

There's still plenty of time for him to possibly end up at Chelsea, if he does indeed step up to the level required.

To be fair though, according to reports, it did. With the Shaw camp being frequently associated with that opinion its not hard to believe thats where it came from.

Anyway, the deal is far less bad than people are making out. £27m rising to £28m wages certainly not in excess of what's being paid to the likes of Ashley Young.

I would say that over the past year transfer fees have inflated in general so in terms of going rate I would probably say its comparable to what we paid for Jones and Smalling.

Also, I think the 'being a fan' thing is a complete red herring. Plenty of players grow up supporting one club before playing for another, they'll do whats best for their career. John Terry was a Manchester United fan, and I don't remember claims that it was an inevitability he would come here.
