Session 9.

The film has a believable scenario. The asbestos firm have an actual reason to be at the asylum, and if they don't do it there's no food on the table. The boss needs the job really bad. The fact that it isn't the usual "haunted house/asylum" type of film, no one is really scared of the asylum. No ghost stories. Most of it plays in broad daylight, and still it messes with your mind. No clichés. It's a portrayal of psychological illnesses taking over. You could interpret 'Simon' as a demon if you wanted to, though.

Enjoyed it.

You really should. I've been thinking about it all day, I'm definitely going to see it again soon.

For those who have seen it:

The last 15 minutes or so just knocked me out. Basically from when Sid (?) falls down the stairs and kills that guy. The music was amazing, the camera work was amazing, the tone and the tension was amazing. Joe killing himself seems like an obvious thing to do to resolve the situation but I totally didn't expect it because I was so enthralled by what was going on. When the credits started I just sat there for like a minute just to take it in. So, so good.

I went to see Looper tonight and thought it was bloody excellent. Haven't been so taken seeing a film in the cinema since Inception. There was a spontaneous round of applause at the end as well, which is the first time I've seen that happen after a screening.

I'll spoiler a few comments on the film for those who haven't seen it.

Firstly, Jospeh Gordon-Levitt did a great job of acting as a young Bruce Willis. Obviously there was effects to make his physical appearance look more similar but he absolutely nailed all of Willis' mannerisms and made it extremely believable.
The story itself was fantastic, and think it trod the line brilliantly of being complex enough to really captivate you whilst not completely losing you half-way through the film. I know time-travel has been done time and time again but this take on it seemed very original and not cliched at all. The bit near the start where Seth was getting fucked up in the present to affect his future self was awesome, even if it was pretty horrific.
Willis was awesome. The scene after he shot the kid was pretty moving.
The ending was pretty unexpected, although as Abbott said that may have been more down to the enthralling nature of the final few scenes rather than particular outstanding storytelling. Liked it a lot.

Totally agree on him playing Willis well. Just watch the way he holds his jaw and his mouth.

Also I loved the scene in the diner where young Joe is asking about time travel and old Joe is just like "are we gonna stick around here and draw diagrams with straws on the table? Because it would take forever! Don't worry about it!" (I'm paraphrasing horribly there, but you know). Good piece of meta commentary on the film there - time travel is confusing and we don't need to get stuck in explaining it all - just go with it!

That's exactly what I thought - might as well have turned to the camera and screamed "IT'S AN ACTION FILM, OKAY, JUST ENJOY IT AND DON'T QUESTION ANYTHING"

Absolutely fantastic, but holy shit was it long. Amazing to think that Sergio Leone's original version would have been almost 4 and a half hours long.

It was really weird to see a 12-year-old Jennifer Connelly as well.

Watched Looper, I don't think it's that good. Fairly serviceable but I'll never watch it again. As a look at characters it's pretty thin and as a study of time travel it is pretty light. Elements like telekinesis feel tacked on. Even as a look at a dystopian future it pales in comparison to something like Children of Men. There are good ideas there but as a whole I don't see it as the revolutionary hype machine most cunts think it is.

Well I loved it. It was refreshing after a summer of pretty disappointing major releases and 147 remakes.

And anyway I went to see Resident Evil 5 yesterday because I promised a friend I'd go with him. Now that is a bad film.

I think that's one of the (many) reasons why a lot of people enjoy the film. There's so little fresh and original content made in the top tier of the film industry at the moment that people are looking to savour anything half decent.

If I'm going to be a cunt I'll compare it to the best three science fiction films from the last three years: Source Code, Inception and Moon and it doesn't hold a candle to them.

I watched the original Total Recall this morning, I'm genuinely amazed that Arnold Schwarzenegger got casted as the leading role in serious films.

It's a good Arnie movie. I don't even want to see the remake as having Colin Farrel taking Arnie's part has crap written all over it.

The last movie I watched was 'For a Few Dollars More'. It's great but not as great as 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'.
