Spanish newspaper El Confidencial have come out with a sensational claim on Tuesday that will be greeted with both glee and despair in north London following Arsenal’s capture of Mesut Ozil.

According to El Confidencial, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was keen to make his mark at Real Madrid on transfer deadline day just as Gareth Bale was being introduced to the Bernabeu.

Levy called Florentino Perez on Monday in an attempt to stop Mesut Ozil’s transfer to Arsenal, Spurs’ great north London rivals.

Jose Felix Diaz writes in El Confidencial that Levy felt betrayed by Real Madrid after lengthy negotiations over Bale and a partnership agreement between Spurs and the Spanish giants that was agreed when Luka Modric left White Hart Lane.

El Confidencial add that Levy and Spurs had enquired about Ozil in July and August during the discussions over Bale but at that point in time it was thought the German playmaker would remain at Real Madrid.

Los Blancos president Florentino Perez politely informed Levy that the deal to sell Ozil to Arsenal was all but done.

This follows suggestions, voiced by Sky Sports News last week, that Daniel Levy had held up Real Madrid selling a player to Arsenal to ensure they would not play against Spurs in the north London derby.

as much as Ozil is a fantastic signing, i dont think Flamini is enough to cover your CM. Especially with the injury records of Ramsey and Wilshere, thats where i'd mostly worry about Arsenal

I see Wenger having a moan about Mourinho pulling the plug on Ba's loan move right before closure of the window. Glad we didn't strengthen a direct rival, particularly after Ozil had signed. Wenger can moan all he likes but it's his own fault. He had 4 months to sign a striker, or to wrap up a loan move for Ba pre-Ozil, no one forced him to leave it until the last minute.

Conversely I think its going to be fascinating seeing how well Ozil copes with being the focal point of a team.

I wonder if he'll struggle initially not having Ronaldo occupying defenders for him.

I thought that clubs shouldn't have any problem with selling players to direct rivals, it happens all the time in Italy, after all. [/Mourinho]

I'm sure Cazorla and Walcott either side of him will the defenders something to think about as well.

Our midfield is looking shit-hot at the moment - Ozil, Cazorla and Walcott as an attacking midfield three is about as good as you're going to get in the Premier League, whereas Ramsey is in the form of his life and Wilshere should only improve as the season goes on. We've still got Podolski, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Arteta to come back as well.

If only we had another quality striker and some more defensive cover.

Nah, I think he's Germany's best player tbf - he was probably Real Madrid's second best last season.

No where near the level of Ronaldo, Di Maria or Benzema. Even for Germany I don't think he's the standout star player in the same way he is at you now, it will be interesting to see if he does struggle with it. I'm not saying he definitely will, and even if he does he's good enough to adapt and cope but I do wonder, is all.

Still somewhat jealous of the Ozil signing. Amazing player.

This is how I've felt over the past five years as I've seen the likes of United, City and Chelsea snap up incredible players whilst our best ones have departed. It's going to be so weird seeing him in an Arsenal shirt.
