Hi guys,

Trying to play an older version of the game, FM 2005 in fact, in my opinion it was the best game, probably because it was the first one I ever played. So I went out and got the game, cheaply, in fact, very cheaply, but every time I go to install it on my computer I get the following error, hoping one of you knowledgeable lot will be able to help me in some way or another.

You should have bought the 06 game instead. Tommy Hoiland and Sindre Loe Bing.

All I remember about 05 was that it was extremely annoying, especially when compared to 06.

06 was boss.

IIRC you could sign Derek Riordan and Kasper Schmeichel pretty cheap on that version.

Is anybody else out there playing FM 2005? I have installed it, but the program will not launch. I have Windows 7.

When I double click on the icon, nothing happens. I have tried to run the program as "administrator," and I've changed the compatibility from Win XP to Win 7, but still nothing. I've installed FM 2005 because that seemed like an easier game than more recent versions. Plus, playing older versions is the only way to play "historical" teams.

I have tried to install FM 2006, but it won't even install on my machine.

its possible that the file is being blocked, right click on the icon and go to properties, if you see an unblock option at the bottom click it and then apply...

Nothing. There is no unblock option. I seem to remember that I *did* play FM2005 on this Win 7 machine, a couple of years ago. But maybe Windows updates deleted whatever it was that let me play it.

I was able to install and play Worldwide Soccer Manager 2008, but that was the version that caused me to give up on the FM games for a long time. It had so much detail and was so much more difficult that earlier versions it only made me frustrated. It was not fun at all.

I currently play the FM2014 version of FM Classic, but I wanted to go back to FM2005 and take over that great Barcelona side...

Nope. There Is an "Advanced" button but no "Unblock" button. And I can't figure out how to display the screen shot here so that you can see what I'm seeing.

Anyway thank you very much for trying to help me.

I have been playing this game since the CM 01/02 version, and have always found it to be a very frustrating game. It has a great deal of potential, but it's so difficult to be even slightly successful and you encounter too much ridicule on the SI forum trying to get help to figure things out or to propose changes that would increase the fun. I guess I have kept playing it off and on over the years because I love soccer and I *want* to try to have fun with this game. Every time I take over a team I begin to imagine the glories I've seen with real-life teams I've admired over the years.

Strangely enough, the Data Editor works fine. It launches with no problems.

This is why I always delay as long as possible "upgrading" to a new version of Windows.

Any error message returned by Windows? Had tried to install fm05 on your siblings PC or borrow your friend PC to test it?

I believe the reason the game won't run is related to a DRM issue. Many games released between the period of 2003 to 2008 include forms of DRM which won't work on recent versions of windows. Microsoft released an update in 2015 which disables the secdrv.sys driver, games which rely on this driver for there DRM service simply will not run without it. You need to enable the secdrv driver in command prompt, be aware that enabling this service makes your computer more vulnerable to viruses etc so be sure to disable it when you are finished with the game. To enable and disable the driver, open a Command Prompt window as Administrator. (Open the Start menu, search for “Command Prompt,” right-click the Command Prompt shortcut, and select Run as Administrator.) Run the “sc start secdrv” command to start the service, and run the “sc stop secdrv” command to stop it afterwards (obviously without the commas). Hopefully this will allow you to play the game...

No error messages. I just double click, and nothing happens.

Well, it figures that a 2015 update by Microsoft disabled a driver I need to run FM 2005. I last played it probably in late 2014 or early 2015. It just figures. I really hate Microsoft. I'm not going to even try to enable/disable the driver, because I'm not a computer expert and would probably cause problems somewhere else.

As much as I love the real life game of football, trying to play a computer football management game that gets more difficult with each version is extremely frustrating. Going back and playing favorite teams on versions of the game that were slightly easier is impossible. SI is never going to produce a database, even a limited one, so that you can play at least a few historical teams, and if you go to their forum and ask why not, the moderators will insist that it's impossible and if you continue to discuss it they will close the thread.

Hey, wouldn't it be fun to play that old Barcelona team with Messi and Ronaldinho and Eto'o? Wouldn't it be great to resurrect the "Busby Babes" and make them live again? Or manage the New York Cosmos back in the Pele days? I don't understand why any football lover *wouldn't* want to do these things.

I am able to play WSM2008, but that was the version that was so mind-numbingly detailed and tactically incomprehensible that I just walked away from FM for several years.

Well, thank you again for spending your time trying to help a frustrated 60 year old FM player try to live out his football management fantasies on the computer. I will buy you a beer if we ever meet.
