I'm returning after 4 away! Last played 2008!

What should I download before I play 2013?

What is this real name fix an does it work?

What are the essentials - logo packs etc.

I'd definitely reccommend the entire catalogue that's available on here. It's a real chore when you've got the game sat there waiting but definitely worth it once it's done.

Get the facepack and metallic logo megapacks from http://sortitoutsi.net/graphics. I spent a good while getting pretty much all the FM2013 SS shirts and 3d kits, too, what popular ones were missing I took from the 11/12 category, such as Bundesliga and a few second divisions.

The real name fix is also essential, http://sortitoutsi.net/downloads/view/932/fm13-real-names-fixes-file-beta

Do any of the ones people have mentioned slow the game down?

i'm going to run it on a macbook pro mid '09, so 2.26ghz and 8gb RAM.

The only effect the graphics packs will have is that the game's splash screen will take a little bit longer to load. There should be no slow-down in game, however.
