What technique are you using to cut?

I would recommend downloading the Grim Colour Reaper plug-in as this lets you turn individual colours transparent, which is ideal for images with a single colour background.

http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae143/blackmetalboon/Untitled_zps9d5ebb69.png

I'll talk you through how to use it.

The first thing to do is add another layer to the image (black is generally best) and move this layer behind the image.

Then using the lasso tool I have slected the top part of the image which is his hair and background. Use the colour picker tool to select the images background colour (in this case it is white) and select the Grim Colour Reaper tool (it will be located in your "Effects" menu) then just adjust the Colour Tolerance slider so that the background disappears without effecting the colour/transparancy of the hair. I generally set the second slider to somewhere between 70 - 90 depending on the background colour.

Just repeat this action on the left and right sides of the image, although depending on the lighting of the image you may have to do the ears, collar, neck & jaw individually.

You may find that on some images there may be a slight amount of snow or colour difference around the edges of the players hair. To rectify this use the Magic Wand tool and click on the players hair (leave the tolerance at around 50%), this will lock the these pixels in place. Next select the Clone Stamp tool, you may need to increase the brush size depending on the size of the image, press CTRL to adjust the spacing between your brush and the clone brush before using it to remove snow/re-colour the edges.

Next rotate the image if it needs to be straightened then select the Rectangle select tool to crop the image (hold down Shift while doing this as its keeps it square) you can reposition the rectangle if needed by selecting the Move Selection tool. Now just cut and paste this into a new image.

All that is left is to resize the image to 180x180, the image seems to retain more sharpness if you are able to resize it to a multiple of this first (ie 360, 720 etc...).

There's plenty of snow left around the cuts and on second cut there's plenty of leftover from the background, like on the top right corner and on left side of him. Always check the cuts on a dark and bright background to see if there's any snow. I added a black background and circled the most obvious ares with snow so you can easily see it yourself.

The tool works so it changes your transparent color to your choice, in this case to black. So the black is actually transparent and so is the other colors you can choose from the tool. You can change it back to default by going to Edit > Preferences > Transparency & Gamut and change the color back to default (light from grid colors dropdown menu). I don't really see why you would need that though, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt if the transparency tool also included an action for default transparency colors.

Ive been trying for days now but cant seem to pick up the technique for getting nice perfect cuts, i have photoshop cs6 but there are no video showing from start off a cut to end of a cut out there to follow, the only tutorials that are here are ones for removing snow etc, heres the complete list of tutorials.

Tutorial Videos
Photoshop:
Transparency Change for CS4
Burn Tool - Darken light Edges
Remove "Snow" from a cut out
YouTube Refine Edge Tutorial for CS5
Practical Guide to Refine Edge in CS5, including video tutorial on images, by Yallii
Basic Eraser Technique in PS Elements (relevant for other versions)
Extraction Tool in CS4
How to improve Exposure Problems
Not a video tutorial, but this post includes clear instructions on how to use Vertus within CS5 to cut images.

As you can see from above there tutorials basically telling you how to burn and image, transparancy changes etc, so what im asking if some nice cutter could guide me through start to finish to making a cut for example getting image the exact steps to doing you cut also how to size image etc as i really want to learn. Thank you

Looks great to me.

Thanks
Tried another few, found that, on a white/plain background they are fairly easy. Any comments on this:

Also, i am struggling a bit with the definition around the edges of hair and ears on darker backgrounds, is anyone able to give me a few pointers on that? Thanks in advance

Just quoting BlackMetalBoon's very helpful post from the other thread to here.

I use a Plug-in for Paint.net called "Grid Warp", but I'm sure there must be something simular available for Photoshop. This basically lets you drag sections of pixels around which comes in handy for players with simular haircuts.

The image below would have the same problem, to fit his hair in means you have to crop the image quite some way from the bottom of his chin, but using the Grid Warp plug-in I have brought his hair (I've only done this on the left hand side as an example) closer to his face which allows you to be able to crop the image much closer to his chin.

http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae143/blackmetalboon/Untitled_zps2f041de1.png

The image on the left is the original image and how you would have to crop it to fit his hair in, while the image on the right is after using the Grid Warp tool on it.

And here is the end result from one of my cuts:

Thanks blackmetalboon, you're tips were very useful.

The warp tool is a built-in tool in Photoshop. The grid is very large by default, but you can select a smaller area (like the left side of his hair in that example) and use the warp tool for that area only and it works quite nicely.

EDIT: You can also use Filter > Liquify tool which is another built-in tool and I think it's actually a lot better than the warp tool for the job.

Quite often player and staff images have been taken on a football pitch, or the person is wearing a bright coloured shirt. This can cause a distracting reflection on the face of the person in an otherwise good quality picture. In the Megapack at least, not much of the persons' shirts are visible (and certainly not the pitch!), so without a properly visible source for the reflection the images might end up looking a little bit funny. Fortunately removing the colour reflection is generally not very difficult.

This is Patrick Ochs with his loud shirt shining on his face on the left, and on the right with the extra green erased:
http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg300/duccio_fm/cut_outs/colour.jpg

I posted this mostly to point out that this "problem" exists, but here is a short walk through on how to remove the reflection in Photoshop (very rudimentary of course):

  1. Obviously the reflection is going to be present on surfaces that are at some angle facing its source. In facepack pictures this would usually mean under the chin/jaw, on the cheeks, on the underside of the nose, just under the eyebrows etc.
  2. Select discoloured areas of roughly similar brightness/saturation with one of the lasso tools.
  3. Add an adjustment layer for hue/saturation. → The new layer will have a mask made out of the selection, so the layer will only affect the selected area. (At this point you may want to turn the layer's lightness to +-100 to make the unmasked area visible, and then add some feather from the mask's properties. Set the lightness back to 0.)
  4. Adjust the layer's hue/saturation/lightness to make the person's skin tone look normal in the unmasked areas.
  5. Reapeat from step 2 for different discoloured spots if there still are some.
What do you think?

Nice tutorial mate
I'm using the clone stamp tool in Color mode to deal with that problem,it is pretty fast, but Photoshop offers many ways to do things.Good to know various possibilities

Bakizp, have you been using Topaz ReMask? Is it actually better than the Photoshop in-built mask refinement tool? It looks like very simple to use.

Yes it's better in my opinion but I find Vertus Fluid Mask superior to Topaz. The cutting quality is just better even though Topaz might be a bit easier to use (not that Vertus is any hard anyway).

Vertus Fluid Mask is ideal for simple plain backgrounds,it is very fast tool just because it calculates edges from the start, you don't need to draw the blend line...That's my primary option. But when it comes to forest background or very complex backgrounds,Topaz is more user-friendly.Both plugins are superior when comparing with PS built-in refine edge tool. After all, plugins for Photoshop are made to improve Photoshop default abilities.

Again, Vertus just does the job so much better for me, no matter what kind of background. Sure it might require a little bit of extra work (very little tbh), but the end result has nearly always been better on it. Just no contest in my opinion.

Even if things are done with the view of improving something, it doesn't automatically make it so. A while a go I watched a Youtube video on Vertus Fluid Mask, and some comments (not very reliable source) were somewhat negative about its qualities in comparison to what Photoshop itself has to offer. That being said, I tried Topaz ReMask 4, and I do think its more usefull at least for facepack hair cutouts than the equivalent default tools.

I use refine edge tool, but some works are awkward. I can't cut specific pics. You know, when I use refine edge tool then I see that errors. (Hairs aren't same like original photo. Some hairs are very very different style according to original photo.) I hope, I need some extra tips for this. Maybe, I need much work for learning. I dunno. I'm working on since 3 years; but still I see same errors.

You need to work on the edges quite a bit. Always check the cuts on dark and bright background to see how the edges are. There's a nice tool for Photoshop linked in the first post of this thread to do just that. You can also clean the collar a bit to make it look better. Here's what I mean:
http://s25.postimg.org/ck0ln1vwf/image.png vs http://s25.postimg.org/rrgl7enr3/image.png
As you can see your cut has plenty of white snow and some red hue around the edges. There's guides for that in the first post and I would recommend you reading/watching them.

And finally here's a cut I made from the same source so you can compare to it while learning. I didn't do anything about the colors, but they are quite okay by default and that's not something you should worry about right now as it's another more advanced thing to learn once you have learned the basics.

Maybe this isn't advice at all, but you don't have to use refine edge tool or fancy plugins. Work the layer mask manually by using lasso tools, keyboard delete button, black/white paint bucket/brushes with different settings etc.
