Herrera has looked superb today. Best player on the pitch, involved in everything.

Will certainly be interesting if Van Gaal does stick to a back 3 this season.

I think he will.

It's the only formation where you can get RVP, Rooney and Mata all in their best positions.

Then Herrera, Carrick, Vidal in the middle.

Guessing you'd want Vidal out of them 3 to be one of the wingbacks?

That was supposed to be Herrera and Carrick/Vidal.

We'll definitely play it, but I can't see it being the only formation we'll use.

It does explain why we aren't interested in wingers when they come on the market though.

His passing was great, in particular those through balls, he was always looking to set someone away. Lovely stuff

Not playing great vs Roma, but Rooney and Mata have just scored two sensational goals.

That bit of play before the penalty for the third was very good.

Liverpool lost to Roma didn't they?

Van Gaal setting very high standards already at #mufc "All my good passers failed today. That’s not normal."

Was Cleverley pure arse or was he alright?

On the average to utter shite spectrum.

If LVG's 3 at the back system simply doesn't cut in the EPL, what's the thought on how Man Utd will go playing another system? A change to a more conventional system would open some weaknesses.

He's talked often about how the team can switch to 4-3-3 quite easily.

Just a left-back down really, but we'll see how James and Blackett get on during the rest of pre-season.

After watching the pre season games I am quite optimistic and excited going into the season, especially with the new formation that I like the look of.

We desperately need another centre mid and at least 1 centre back though. At the minute playing 3 at the back we only have 3 senior centre backs in Evans, Jones and Smalling. Keane and Blackett have done well pre season but I cant see them being used a lot in the coming season. If we signed an experienced centre back and had Jones and Evans either side I would be happy enough. Both can come out with the ball and especially Evans is good on the ball.

Yeah Vidal and Hummels would be ideal, though i'm not confident either deal would happen. We also need to get more players who are comfortable playing wing back if we're gonna stick with this formation. Rafael and Shaw are both fine enough but beyond that all we have is Wingers who can be trained to play there, which isn't exactly ideal.

Dani Alves would slot in well if he's available (which seems like he is). Wouldn't be expensive either.

Newcastle are going to win unfortunately, but I feel Man Utd are a good backup bet.

Hernandez, Fellaini, Nani, Anderson and Rafael axed. Shinji to stay.

If true, I'm happy that Shinji is staying, but I'll be very disappointed if Rafael goes.

Getting rid of Rafael would definitely be a daft move, we're already short in that position. Will be sad to see Hernandez go too, love the little guy and think he would work much better as one of 2 up front

They've made it up so no.

Am I the only one that wouldn't mind seeing Kagawa leave if we get some decent money for him?

He's obviously a decent player, but he's not set the world alight here and even without him we're well stocked with number 10s. He's obviously likeable, and he's not had the easiest two years at the club what with RVP coming in before he could show what he could do centrally and then Moyes but I kind of think if he was going to make it here he would have done so by now.

Chicharito should go imo. Don't really think he fits in here anymore, i'd promote James Wilson and give him a go.

I don't see any burning need to sell him. If we do play with two up top next season then we need 4. RVP, Rooney, Welbeck and Hernandez is fine for the minute. Wilson's only 18 and I don't think really ready yet, but given RVP's injury record (although hopefully not) there will be time for others to get minutes up top.
