I think he's potentially a very good defender, but he'll be 27 in January so he really does need to stop getting injured. The same really with Jones and Smalling for me, although they're obviously much younger.

Depends who you ask.

I tend to think he's hideously over-rated because he's Irish and we have a large Irish contingent in our fan base as well as looking decent on the ball and being a youth product. He definitely looked promising when he broke through, but I think his proper debut season here was also arguably his best and he just hasn't improved as you would expect. I genuinely think he's pretty average and with an injury record as poor as his I think we're better off getting rid.

Fine he's British if you're going to be being pedantic, but I'm not sure that calling someone born in Belfast 'Irish' is incorrect from a purely geographic point of view.

Geographic? No, that'd be grand. Culturally? Massively incorrect, unfortunately.

Presumably. Also wouldn't mind betting a lot of less well off Irish/Norn Irish people came over to work the docks in both Manchester and Liverpool during their boom years and took back their allegiances to those English clubs when they returned home and passed them down. Pulled that out of my arse though, so could be complete bollocks.
