Certain he's available next Summer for free so not exactly great business.

Get another season out of him, and get him to change in mind in January.

In any case considering we paid £18M for him and turned him into one of the best goalkeepers in the world a bid of £20-25M is a pisstake.

If United win a title thanks to De Gea losing him for nothing wouldn't really matter.

Still much better chance with De Gea than without.

It's the Lewandowski situation repeating itself.

Because Man United actually strengthen the weakest areas of the squad, if it takes 3 players, they'll buy 3 players. I think Wenger only signs "backup" players and maybe one "big" signing per season.

That and Arsenal are almost glued to 4th spot

Keepers aren't valued highly in the market compared to that of other outfield players, which makes £20-25m a very sizeable transfer fee to invest in a keeper in general terms, let alone for one that is potentially available for free next season.

Peruzzi cost Inter £15.7m, De Gea to United £18m, Neuer to Bayern £19m and the obvious Buffon to Juve for £33m are the top 4 highest transfer fees for a keeper.

Given that United had to spend £18m to sign De Gea in the first place makes the situation worse in terms of a return on their investment.

Well you know, we did finish third last season.

We do have financial constraints still meaning we can't spunk 100's of millions each window, but there's still no excuse for a back-up DM and a striker we need to challenge for the title properly. That's only £60-70m really

Which is my point, Arsenal won't spend any more major money on any other players, they've got their "marquee" signing if you will. They still need a striker, and maybe a new center back to at least have a chance of challenging for the title.

We're now being linked with Pedro. £22M. The source seems to be straight from Woodward.

It makes very little sense selling De Gea this season.

Firstly, he's a better keeper than anyone we could get to replace him. Thats compounded by the fact that probably the most likely replacement (Lloris) is likely to command a higher fee than we would receive from De Gea's transfer. We're also not in a position where we need to sell players for any reason and any money we do receive for a player is largely immaterial - we'd have £25m to invest in players regardless of whether we sell to Real Madrid or not.

We're far better off having a year of De Gea and letting him go for free unless Real Madrid meet our terms.

That's a little bit of a moot point though in some regard. He's going to have to be replaced one way or another, the market you'll be in for a keeper isn't going to alter significantly over the next 12 months, the same likely targets will still be on the radar and command similar transfer fees as they would now, if not more. Losing someone like De Gea for nothing is a terrible business decision, particularly more so when the club has already invested £18m + wages into him since he joined. Even getting something like £20m for him is a significant deal given the predicament. At least that's an extra £20m (or whatever he is possibly sold for) into the budget that can be put towards a replacement, plus other potential end of window transfers that may occur.

If he stays and you don't win anything of significant worth, which is entirely possible, then that's millions walking out the door for nothing in return. United are better off just selling him off for whatever top price they can wrangle and invest back into someone that's going to be able to help the club beyond this coming season. Holding onto him would just be a sign of United being too headstrong over making a sensible business move with the cards on hand.

Well no, at best losing him next season is a decent sporting decision. It's ensuring the best goalkeeper we can get is in goal for us next season. Whether that leads to trophies or not is almost an irrelevancy, you can never guarantee that anything you do would will lead to trophies, but even by your own admission we're better off with him than without him. That should always take primacy to business concerns.

Secondly, its as much a game as anything else. Not bending over for Real Madrid is as important as the deal itself. That's why our terms are so clear, we're not a club that wants or needs to sell players and being as absolutely difficult to buy players we want to keep from as possible is nothing but a good thing for us. Who knows? By dragging it out this long we might end up with Ramos out of the deal, that's already put us in a better situation than pisisng our pants - as you would have us do - would have done even if, eventually, we come out with nothing to show for it.

They could also end up with De Gea changing his mind and signing a new contract.

It's good to see a club making a decision for sporting, rather than business reasons for once. Utd are stronger with him than without him.

Also, if he leaves next season, they have a full season to decide on and sign his replacement, have him in the first day the window opens and go through a full pre-season. Could even bring them in in January. If they were to lose him this season they'd need to rush through a new signing and throw him into the team straight away.

With so many other signings/changes this summer it's important that your Goalkeeper is stable. They've had enough issues with that in the past.

Keeping a hold of De Gea for another year is more important than £25-£30 million. With him in goal we're probably more than likely going to qualify for the Champions League again and as Flash said if we know by January or February he's leaving we can make sure we've someone else coming in on day one of preseason.

Shame. Though if it happens im guessing we will start playing with proper Wingers again with him and Depay. Then play Mata behind Rooney I would imagine.
