Draw seems a fair enough result.

I though Haidara actually really improved in the second half, looked genuinely good, and had Tadic in his pocket. Wijnaldum looked good, Mbemba looked incredible. and overall it was a good performance.

McClaren seemed incredibly lucky mind, his subs were woeful and Mitrovic looked a donkey.

It's great saying how you love to kick defenders, but its no good kicking a full back and nearly getting yourself sent off, and then not winning a first ball, and being in Fonte's pocket.

If Newcastle still have money to spend. Think Shane Long should maybe be the one to go for.

Obertan - Still great!!!!

I do think Mitrovic needs time to adjust, but this was a pretty anonymous debut after his ridiculous kicking. Also wasn't convinced by Tiote or Coloccini, although neither have really had a pre-season.

Do think a new forward wouldn't be the worst idea, but Shane Long is not someone I'm always convinced by, and would probably be a club record fee. Although presumably if we signed him it would stop him fecking scoring against us. I do think we need a new defender or two, although Mbemba had an excellent debut.

Yeah I'll take that, Stoke isn't the easiest place to go, plus a win on the opening day is always good. Some neat play at times but everyone looks a bit rusty, Benteke looked a bit slow too

Genuinely entertaining by Newcastle today, played some great football and I loved watching us trying to play it out from the back, we'll get better at that.

Haidara looked dodgy and we could do with improvement there/at CB and I agree the subs were very strange.

Perez and Aarons should have been the choice instead of Mitrovic and De Jong, I thought.

Team fell to bits when Anita went off, he was superb today.

Yeah, I reckon Perez is very overrated, but he's excellent in that situation - Has both pace and works very hard.

Also pleased that Newcastle used width today.

Not a good performance against Spurs and could have been a very bad day had Eriksen taken that early chance. I'll take an opening day win though against Spurs any day. Thought Smalling was very good and Romero impressed me given he was under a lot of pressure considering De Gea had been dropped and may be off, meaning the number one spot could be up for grabs.

tbh I thought Southampton would sell Long this summer, now that Rodriguez is back - Obviously they might not want to sell. But if he's available for £10m, might be a better bet than Austin.

On another note - People are still obsessed with our defence, but on the whole Newcastle probably defended better than Southampton. A side that was built on extremely solid defending last year. Admittedly missing Bertrand and Clasie.

I don't think we defended awfully and it was certainly much better than last year but the two goals weren't exactly superb play or super dangerous crosses from Southampton.

Pelle is rather hard to mark at the best of times so letting him drift into the half space between the full back and centre back is never gonna be a good idea.

If we got a left back in with the quality of Janmaat and another CB to cover when Colo/Mbemba are injured I'd be confident of that.

Their attack is miles ahead of the rest, add KDB in the mix and it's ridiculous.

Maybe, but you're not taking into consideration the fact that WBA are playing like we did yesterday, awful.

It might only be one game in but Arsenal don't look that great and Chelsea didn't either.

United and Liverpool won, but hardly convincing.

Then City looked strong all over the park, Aguero on the bench and still battered West Brom away.

Interesting facts from the opening day. Manchester United are the only side to win the Premier League after losing on the opening day of the season. Arsenal had lost just one of their previous opening day fixtures and West Ham had lost more than any other side. Chelsea had won their opening game in each season they'd won the Premier League and had won every opening game under Mourinho.

EDIT: Maybe you can't read too much into it as it's the opening day of the season with a long, long way to go, but then again maybe you can. If history repeats it won't be Chelsea or Arsenal winning the Premier League this season.
