Townsend will definitely be better than Thauvin who cost the same amount of money - and will almost certainly be better than Cabella.

Are you surprised Oxlade-Chamberlain has regressed? Pretty much every Arsenal player has, Wilshere, Walcott and Welbeck all have, as well as the likes of Chambers and Szczesny. Bellerin only became good because he was an accident.

Not really. He hasn't regressed he just hasn't progressed. He needs a loan badly, if Everton bin Ross 'Empty Head' Barkley then Ox would be perfect foil for them, as he's pretty much the exact same player. Wilshere is still an absolutely class footballer and I can't wait till he's back and on that right wing, he's suffered another set-back in training though. Walcott's always been the same since he scored 20+ goals a few years ago but he's more efficient than just being a good player. Welbeck has always been pretty average but every team needs a workhorse like him.

Chambers is okay but just completely bereft of confidence. He's a really tidy player and will definitely be a CB, still time for him yet. Szczesny is an idiot but has been decent for Roma I've heard. Bellerin is still lacking quality defensive-wise but usually with Coquelin and a hard worker in front of him he's good to have in the team.

Amazed at Chelsea not offering Terry a new deal. Do they treat all their legends like that? Terry and Lampard both should have been allowed to retire there.

One shite transfer doesn't mean other shite transfers get off the hook.

£12m for Shelvey is a lot better than £14m for Townsend regardless, you can guarantee the match commentary would be "long distance shot by Townsend, off target" non-stop for 90 mins

Fun fact: In the PL for Spurs, Andros Townsend only scored with a shot from open play once. He did get another goal from open play but it was a cross that missed everyone and went straight in.

The only positives I can come up with for Townsend are that he is quick and takes a very good penalty. Other than that, he doesn't really do much. I hope he does well though, he was very frustrating most of the time, but he seemed like a nice bloke and didn't sulk like most modern footballers would when left out of the team for long periods.

Have to agree with you on that.

Obviously have the chat with them that their playing time may/will be limited, but allow them to retire at the club.

Considering the same thing has happened to Raul, Gerrard and others I'm really not surprised when it happens again any more. Clubs at the top level are obviously less sentimental than most fans would like them to be these days.

Absolutely an appalling decision. He's still far and away our best defender and first name on the team sheet. Not only do you lose an exceptional defender, but his immense leadership and experience. The development seen in Zouma this season by playing with Terry has really helped him oust Cahill and establish himself in the side.

His importance extends beyond the pitch. Even if he stayed and played less, he'd still be a valuable assets in the side. I loathe to think who will be captain now amongst a side that has absolutely no leaders. As much as I like Ivanovic, I cringe at the thought of him being captain because that will most likely mean he'll remain first choice RB when he also has declined.

The plus side, there's still a few months left for him to continue his good form and show he's still pivotal through our rebuild.

Wasn't there rumours that Cahill was looking to leave too?

I suspect this means you will be back in hard for Stones in the summer, but a centre-back pairing of Zouma and Stones hardly oozes experience.

BBC just announced he's signed?

Edit: Actually it says subject to a medical which means he's not signed and they're simply lying...

Paper talk, not sure how much truth there was to the situation. I'd rather sell Cahill and keep Terry, if it came down to keeping one though.

Wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. As you've touched on though, the lack of experience is worrying. Particularly if you take Ivanovic out at RB. It leaves for a rather underwhelming defensive unit with no leadership.

We'll rue this decision for years to come. Unless the board wake up and realise they're making a daft decision and re-sign him.

Doesn't look like the Berahino link has any legs anymore.

Left back and I'll be over the moon.

Perez signing a new contract is superb news too.

We got linked earlier with re-signing Jose Enrique, to which my response was "Why?"

Though apparently we wouldn't offer him a long-term contract so he's back to playing FIFA and Mario Kart on £60k a week wages at LFC. Hard life but someone has to do it.

Glad we didn't end up signing him.

According to the Secret Footballer, Pulis wants to offload Berahino, and sign players and Pulis/his agent get commission on the deals. He's desperate to cash in now as he'll know he'll get sacked soon. Pearce meanwhile is willing to sell Berahino, but he doesn't want to let Pulis spend the money on 'his' transfers - so is going to wait until the Summer after Pulis is gone.

Pearce is unwilling to sack Pulis as he's worried that doing so would disrupt the squad and possibly put them in trouble.

I normally ignore TSF as it's normally gossip/confirmation bias-y type thing - but it does seem to fit with the 'internal politics' at WBA journalists are hinting at.

So we didn't sign a striker in the end. I wonder how long it will be before Kane gets injured then.

I know he's technically not a striker, but Son has done alright when he's played upfront hasn't he?

He did ok, but it would probably work better if he played as a false 9.
