Went out last night, woke up at six in the morning at some bird's house and wrote the synopsis for a book on her computer. Forgot to email it to myself so I had to write it out again. Fuck women.

Well I've had the idea for some time about writing a series of books about a downed WWII pilot who has to find his way home from Northern Italy, via the Alps, France and Belgium. Problem was that the amount of research involved would be astronomical. On top of that I have only a child's understanding of military history. What use is a journey story if the way my journey goes is going to be completely unrealistic?

So this morning when I woke up I thought about adapting it into a fantasy setting. So the plane is on a bombing run over Northern Italy when it is shot down. The pilot wakes up in a forest unscathed, no sign of his crew or his wreckage. Assumes he has crashed in forest somewhere in Italy.

Meets oddly dressed man - wanted criminal - in the forest, possibly murderer. After a fight they talk and decide to travel together. In a nearby village where they are looking for food they are found by a local guard who they kill in order to stay hidden. They are discovered hiding the body and are captured. They are transported to a major city where the pilot learns about the world. Bitterly disenfranchised with two distinct people: serfs and bourgeoisie/nobles. Bitter oppression. They are charged with the murder of the guard and sentenced to death. Before they are hanged an event happens which facilitates their escape.

The murderer's friends take him and the pilot to their ship where they explain how they are fighting a war to try and dethrone the leader of the country. The pilot explains that is all terrific but he has no interest in helping their cause and asks how he can find his way home. He is told he will need to travel to the south through a series of islands in order to speak to a wise man. The murderer agrees to aid the man because the pilot saved his life.

Along the way they pick up a teenage girl who tries to steal from them. The murderer tries to kill the girl but the pilot stops him. Later it is discovered that the girl has run away because her father is sexually abuses her. They reach the wise man who tells the pilot he has come to this world because he is needed. (make better) Dejected and not understanding what that means, he thinks it is bullshit. He travels further south with the three after learning he may be able to leave elsewhere.

While travelling they learn that another country plans to join forces with the current one in order to enact sweeping culls of peasants in order to redress chronic overpopulation. Pilot has change of heart and decides to travel back to the murderer's crew in order to inform them of the horrendous plan. There is a confrontation at the murderer's crew house with a captain in the current country's army, because he doesn't want word to get out that they plan to enact the genocide. After the brutal victory the leader of the murderers asks the pilot to travel to a distant land raise an army to help fight the incoming horde.

End of book one.

Something loosely like that. I don't want any high fantasy - no magic, no wizards nothing like that. People will discuss and talk about spirits and shit, but the story will be told from the first person so the pilot will be constantly skeptical about the whole thing. I feel like it will be less fun and more brutal. The murderer the pilot will travel with will be that: a ruthless, brutal man. There's a shit ton of detail that needs to go in, but I like that I have a lot of ideas to pursue, instead of painstaking research. I like the ideas of racism and using 20th century poltical ideals as allegory. The genocide of millions is pretty obvious.

Obviously there are two arcs: both the journey to find a way home and the journey to end a tyrannical regime. The second is easier to complete than the first. I'm trying to think of a plausible way for it to be completed without resorting to "he's in a coma".

Hmm. One thing I'd say, which depends entirely on why you like writing, is that making it about a crashed fighter pilot is a bit cliché. I guess that's kind of the point since you're going to switch around with the fantasy thing but that's just my personal thing. I mean they made me read a book about fighter pilots in school. Never again. But I guess that's more a framing device and it could be more interesting with your rather brash writing style. As long as you don't make him a typical badass hero then you should be fine.

What might be cool is if it was implied that there was magic and high fantasy shit but it's not actually relevant to anything. Like magic is a thing that exists but these people don't really have anything to do with it. Kind of like if you took the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe but instead of kids being made into royalty it was just some cunt getting on with it.

I think it's important to have someone from a military background, because that way they can handle themselves in a fight. As you said, it's a device to get into the main bulk of the story..

I'm definitely going down the second route. Fantasy books have this terrible thing of people having to go to the ends of the world to retrieve a mysterious power that can defeat the most evil of all evils.

I really want to write it now, but I need to finish my other thing first.

I quite like your synopsis, It reminds me of a book called 'The long walk to freedom' by Slavomir Rawciz which I read a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed.

Is that not in the same league of having to build an army? It would be interesting to see someone put into a fantasy setting who's generally selfish. Someone who doesn't really care what happens to the people or the world he's been taken to as long as he gets out, the easiest way out possible.

That's the idea. But I think at some point he has to get involved in some respect. For purely selfish reasons, but he has to leave the world differently than he left it.

I've seen The Way Back. It's a great story, but it was convincingly shown to be a fabrication in 2006.

I enjoyed it, I only watched it to avoid watching Gulliver's Travels with Jack Black for obvious reasons.

Don't make it a coma, make it something like he's acting this out in the real world across the country side leaving heaps of innocent dead in his wake though in his mind he sees it as this epic journey to save people. Basically he is a nut case killing hundreds of people, no one will ever see that coming haha. Yes I'm sadistic so what

Someone with mental health conditions would be more interesting than someone in coma, because that essentially is just a dream, and no good story ends with "it was all a dream".
