We have a goalkeeper! James McKeown signs a new two year deal!

Expecting another keeper to sign too in the coming weeks. We never played with a keeper on the bench in our 6 years in the Conference, due to only being allowed 5 subs.

Awful appointment, it's like they're actually trying their best to wind us up.

Apart from one season where I was living abroad, I've had a season ticket since I was 5 (I'm 22 now) - but I'm finding it harder and harder to justify going. This isn't the Rovers I fell in love with!

Which begs the question: why do people think Villa stand a cat in hell's chance of being anywhere near the top 6 with that squad?

With investment, they might be half-decent. But as things are, they're more likely to go down than up. That's a squad which needs dismantling and rebuilding. Better sides than Villa have gone down from this division (Wolves a couple of years back spring to mind - straight from the Premier League and not in anything like as much of a mess as Villa are now). Di Matteo hasn't really been given a chance to build his own side in the past, doing well with inherited squads, and this will be an all-new challenge. Not to mention, the atmosphere at the club seems to be pure poison. The first sign of something going wrong will see the fans turn on the players - so when they go a goal down to Ipswich (or whoever) on the opening day the players will be looking around for support and they'll find themselves sold short.

They might prove me wrong, but this is an incredibly tough league. Derby are probably favourites to go up with Pearson in charge, in part because they know the league and also because they will invest (their first priority should be their defence, mind - a progressive side aiming for the top flight should not have Richard Keogh playing week in, week out). Newcastle and Norwich will be tough propositions, the former because they'll keep most of their players (who underachieved badly last season) and will want to make amends in a positive atmosphere and the latter because they have experience in this league. Sheffield Wednesday will be stronger, as will Brighton. Cardiff are rebuilding quietly. Although it's early days this summer, and a lot of business has to be done, Villa have their work cut out if they want to challenge at the right end of the table.

As I said earlier in this thread, I'd be happy enough with mid-table this season whilst we rebuild the squad under RDM and hopefully kick on in 2017/18. The current squad has a few decent players such as Ayew, Adama and Grealish who could tear up most Championship defences if given the freedom to do so (and if they stay of course), it's the defence and central midfield that needs a complete revamp.

Aston Villa are absolutely miles better than Derby tbf. Derby's best times in the past decade and a half are under either Steve McClaren or Billy Davies. They made Bradley Johnson there record signing!

Middlesbrough went up last season comfortably despite their manager having a massive huff. Burnley and Brighton were 2nd and 3rd despite having absolutely nothing aside from running around.

Spot on that, both times Burnley have just gone up in the last 3 years it's just been down to organisation, work ethic etc. Absolutely nothing to fear at all in this division, we're all as bad as each other!

If we get our new ground and continue to build on what we have there's no reason we can't push on. We were a Division 1 (Championship) team before so no reason to think we couldn't ever make it back. Just a hell of a lot more difficult these days with the ridiculous money being thrown around. We're gearing up to push on again next season (ala Bristol Rovers), hopefully we can push for the playoffs. We'll see what kind of signings we make mind.

Someone I follow on Twitter retweeted it; I doubt it's real, namely because they'd be sending us all the way to Doncaster on a Tuesday night...

If anything that probably confirms the legitimacy.

And ooo we visit you, according to that list, on the day my son is due to be born! Missus will have hold on a bit longer.

Doubt it's real too but you never know I guess. I'd quite like a home game as our first, haven't had one in years!

Found the leaked document and I gotta say if they're not real then someone has too much time on their hands!

We've been away on our first game for years IIRC. June 17th is when the official fixtures come out I think.

That's what I thought but apparently that was the date last season's came out. Oddly, the Football League's come out a week after the Premier League's, which are due out June 15th.

Yeah, it's the 22nd. Watch out for who we get first up: they're quite likely to go up. In our 4 seasons back in the Championship we've faced Cardiff (eventual champions), Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth (eventual champions) and Hull (promoted) on the opening day. We faced Forest that year they'd invested heavily and looked like pre-season favourites but managed to cock up and never look like promotion... Actually, that could be any of the last 5 seasons.

I'd quite like Villa away on the opening day. I've never done Villa Park, and with commitments kicking in in September I'm unlikely to get to too many away games this season and might have to miss a few home midweekers. With that in mind, Newcastle away on a Saturday would be helpful as well, as I'd like to get there.

I'm hoping for Burton away, Burton is only 15 minutes from where I live so it's closer than home games.

Sissoko is having a laugh if he thinks Arsenal would be genuinely interested in him.

Sure, he's better than the Championship but he certainly has an inflated ego.

Charlton appoint Russell Slade. NOw that might be a bit of an uninspiring appointment but they could have done a lot, lot worse than that because IF he is given full control of things there, I'd bet they will make the play-offs. (big if though)

Only Vale's and Oldham's managerial post still up for grabs. Read Shefki Kuqi and Paul Dickov are on Vale's shortlist and Iain Dowie has been linked with Oldham. Would all be dead funy appointments imo.

Oh and apparently, we are announcing four new signings on Monday. Surely not, but we all have hope

We've signed a (reserve) goalkeeper! And a midfielder! That brings to 6 the number of players we've got signed this summer. We're still a few short, but the squad is starting to look much more like it.

GK: Coleman, Murphy, Coddington (Danny Ward from Liverpool strongly rumoured to also be joining)
D: Smith, Davidson, Hudson, Lynch, Cranie, Hefele, Loewe (we're at least a right-back short)
DM: Whitehead, Hogg, Billing, Paurevic
AM: Scannell, Lolley, Van la Parra, Dempsey (linked strongly with Jack Payne of Southend and Ryan Gauld of Sporting Lisbon, with a deal for Jamie Paterson yet to be agreed)
S: Wells (rumours surrounding Bochum striker Simon Terodde refuse to go away, and linked with Nicky Ajose)

Throw in a few young players who can fill in as and when needed - Boyle and Kane at the back, with Hanson and Senior developing in the full-back roles, Booty in midfield and Bojaj and Pyke up front - and we'll be reasonably well-equipped for the season. We'll be a very different proposition, especially with a full pre-season with Wagner. Prepare to be gegenpressed.

The former is moving to Stuttgart for 3 Mil and Swindon rejected 500k for the latter recently so don't know much they might want for him but not cheap though

I'd be the first to admit the Terodde rumours seem far-fetched, but they have been persistent which gives them some credence. The Ajose one is new. We need a big, strong striker, that much is for sure. We need another option beyond Nahki.
