What really caught my eye in the Europa league groups is that there are three Swedish teams in there. And Oldham!

Unfortunately we were all 3rd seeds so we weren't able to draw (and inevitably thrash) them

We start with the Spanish SuperCopa, a chance to get one over Atletico Madrid:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/E2b4rpUuJFV5efOcglQnJn8ecf1ONs0CanWMDNQp.png

Well that completely fucked then, we couldn't handle their narrow diamond at all, it's like we completely forgot how to defend properly.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/TCY3oSl7KExwxdl61dBtMqw8PlWCLP8qRTmjm18u.png

This game was effectively pointless as a contest, it was in the middle of an international break, and while both sides lost players to national duties Atletistill had superior players for the most part standing in.
At least our shooting was at its most efficient all season, even if our defence had to be awful for the goals to be necessitated.
Well I say that, it's only to scrape a draw this game, we still lost on aggregate anyway.

The league, well it wasn't much better viewing:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/qjtrxxEG4uRiBqvFfSyl6tzYpYMI2e7atLEiLj7W.png

Fucking hell, we were terrible here - couldn't stop their plays, couldn't generate any sort of play ourselves, an utter disaster.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/Ik1HnKBa5qRzFKUdJ3MAeLp0IfKCQs9SRgUWeMqa.png

It has to be said, while our defence has been absolutely shite, the forward line hasn't been covering itself in glory either, what absolutely wasteful shooting.
Yeah and we lost, again, though it seems like we've had the short straw by playing (and losing to) 3 of the top 5 already - the other being fucking Atletico.

Next up was bottom side Villareal, who were ripe pickings having lost all their games thus far, but before that was extremely worrying news:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/AjM3lmEYcBgGTnNMiC1nFkDGjnUeOC40vEUgolcM.png

I mean it is only 7 days, but my deputy's also out for a couple of months so this was all we were able to call upon.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/N15DZakge0KJPPaVaG0KXJcZRwg1XKt7bif6PYGy.jpg

Bleak, we could well lose to the cellar-dwellers and after them it'll be FUCKING Atletico, if we lose both (and we'll probably concede close to double figures at this rate) confidence is going to be shot.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/BzVzdV4phPAS9mrfyhJoWkYN7HPwcLI60uhhqKup.png

Absolute miracle, we somehow managed to keep them at bay for the 1st half while we racked up a decent lead, and even when we faced much more fight in the second we held firm enough.
The bloke even got himself a 7.5 rating.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/GbzVIkMBCrJhScpYTi0FbZunJ31vQ3GeSFyAQyTS.png

... And it all comes crashing down.
I'll not comment on this game since we were obviously severely hamstrung, but it is poignant to note that in this month we've conceded 72 shots and 11 goals to FUCKING ATLETICO.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/P5OjRkJOeKI4bgzBSkeJfdcTxkQhBnGymcgDr6w1.png

Oh look, our usual haunts of mid table mediocrity.
At least we've got quite a number of the top sides out of our system now, hopefully we can benefit on a more forgiving fixture list for the next month or so.

We end with Matchday 1 of the Europa League group stage:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/wOhkOeSz2PLEwLlEbhbv7O89YDkQBelUeyLtTpB7.png

A largely rotated team thoroughly outplayed an inferior Dinamo side, with this showing we'll be disappointed to say the least if we don't secure another 3 points in Tbilisi

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/9PBHqc9eU8pTAzziGFGGhuzpX2IaLevJjqowjLil.png

Top of the table, not that that'll last once we get our asses handed to us by Freiburg - and let's not even start on Chelsea.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/jWhl4W8OzyazrnLe4leOCvpGx1Qx86DxGLG0QmT4.png

A relatively comfortable win, gutting to not be able to keep a clean sheet and having to clench my arsehole for the remainder of the game.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/yEL6LkArNJvN2EhqhOzr42L2EVeeXby6GSNwNhrv.png

Struggled to get going at the start and eventually conceded the opener, but once we got a (rather scrappy) opener we went from strength to strength and controlled the rest of the game, getting a equaliser soon after and having more attempts to score.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/SBazvn11hZ0amfguVvE20KVUExsnVhqW9WGnwFHq.png

This was a far different Numancia side to the one which thrashed us last season, hey still had much of the ball but their buildup play was more laboured.
Once they went down to 10 men we were always on the ascendancy and were constantly knocking on the door, but just couldn't find a way through.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man - Nikolaou came off the bench to rifle in a stoppage time winner.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/mJXVuZDGYeJs4Lz4ZNZwmEjRLzRJH2NzPl1VjN7L.png

Okay, what the fuck.
Horrible game to watch, both sides were labouring to create chances but we looked increasingly poor at that and once Celta got their 1st goal they were always going to get the 3 points.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/p3RzI3NZXl34EhOMFtpvHOXXwPue7SqJKc2Xd1Qj.png

Maddening way to end the month, but at least a string of decent wins have got us a top-half position.

Europa League group stages now, where we play the real challenges in the group:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/TvHgmedukzJTkwx4PXRpHIzCTdgP5EELzwoyhrAL.png

The 1st half was boredom, and the 2nd half threatened to be so until Freiburg squeezed in an opener.
That seemed to awaken something in the team and Alava equalised immediately after, before Szeman demonstrated his set-piece prowess again with a double, before Matuszczyk added icing on the cake with a great finish.
Glad to have won this quite convincingly, a statement of intent in the group.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/DNFT1AlDMoWUpo4PLBhiUTftGNsoPxeNiI6UwiDv.png

Only 1 team in this unfortunately, as we sent out a rotated team to account for fixture congestion.
They took it easy, we were just sloppy and we paid for it almost instantly.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/5A7B4acNte1Mq5AMOjZsp86X5P98kik1lv5cbSCQ.png

Amazingly Freiburg failed to secure victory against Tbilisi, so we hold a vital lead going into the return fixtures.
It's really in our hands right now, after the 2nd Chelsea game we just need to not fuck things up in Matchdays 5 and 6.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/FzoC8RNLpDRrLml9fdSX0PQhQQ1XjKtpPQlwPGID.png

Mad game, as recent encounter between the sides have been for some reason.
We took the lead thanks to Matuszcayk, lost it to a penalty but went into the break back to a goal up thanks to Alava making up for his handball that led to the penalty.
It really looked like we were going to to get all 3 points when Conte scored our 3rd goal - way to ruin that expectations within 3 minutes.
The collapse seemed to take a lot out of our players' systems, and while both sides continued to trade blows a draw was how it ended.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/rAyiZH75ONlL5lZOOEsiWDP1WnIxitxgZeK0eXt7.png

Szeman had a nightmare here, missing a penalty played with his nerves big time and he was a wreck at the back for the rest of the game, being manhandled (which doesn't happen at all really) by Rayo's own manmountain (and Italian ex-Pichichi winner) Carettini.
Fortunately for us Rayo were even more shit at the back and we managed to scrape a win.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/hZsvJaf4GxnYy1bDHUQTjnoKH2BkKxGuNPKOsYtp.png

Oo, derby day win, always a hit with the fans.
Sporting never looked like they had the stomach for this, and we dominated from start to finish, even if we did concede late in the game to make for (yet another) nervy finish.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/v3Ia92D9vSzTfQ0Sum5qTH21x1bcnnuzJlUjGjCz.png

Again, another sour ending to a productive month...
While we weren't dominating proceedings much our shot count showed that we were a threat throughout, only for the actual shooting to let us down.
Fun fact as well, scorer of the opener Zambaz was one of the transfer targets when we were still in the 2nd tier as a striker to rotate with Matuszczyk, but I deemed him too expensive - funny how that could come back and bite me in the ass.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/XtgcYNPSIx6XgG6XSrxiWBMC6SqDNxGIEci6Idcb.png

Comfortably in the top half, with an outsider's outside chance of challenging for the European spots - I can't ask for more considering we're also involved in the Europa League.

Speaking of which:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/XAPItUJVAxXZjXS5OtiPYQhXj6Z2fRhdtiU1ofEn.png

Don't let the stats fool you here - we were clearly outclassed here by Chelsea and had more of the ball and more shots by virtue of playing at home and more proactively as a result.
Chelsea made their chances count, we didn't - that's about it.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/4SgMuKWDPVbww4BwDoPD7WCbMOryQUHRhkImIuj6.png

A consolation of sorts, though I am surprised that it wasn't a game against Madrid or Barca that held the previous record - these Asturians sure love their derbies.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/yUMxzNKE0v28dVz02rJdq05Rw84QLzaIyZztRwwR.png

Far, far tighter that I'd have liked, but I'll fucking take it.
It was a backup XI that was played here, and while the overall performance was passable, one played stood out as having underperformed - Ismael Fernandez showed his age (even though he's 'only' 31, relatively young for centrebacks) and his declining status in the pecking order with an inability to stop Tbilisi's striker for scoring from their only shot on target.
From then on it was all us, but our finishing boots (as usual) deserted us when it mattered most, and it too an unlikely hero - wantaway utility man Lucio who's leaving on a free at the end of the season - coming off the bench and scoring a belter to secure a win that should've been sealed up so much earlier.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/0IOgoQmWmEzrPkbkKXRdj142cn3BShCvGA0WN5mI.png
https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/cNXElGWScOiAQ5pZo53VIPHy0RahK3RvbPzqnUiv.png

No matter, because it means we've qualified for the knockout rounds! Glad to be able to qualify with a game to spare.

There was success at a former hunting ground as well:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/nek23ZGc3kny6FvIJcZNzUHbwBroBoqGWPhtMt6C.png

Fucking finally - after choking on umpteen occasions Smouha finally did what I couldn't do with then and won the African Champions League title.
They'll have a fucking long way to go before even dreaming of matching Al Ahly's tally though.

Another game where we couldn't/didn't convert any of our chances then got punished eventually.
Matuszczyk was awful up front, it's frustrating that he's unable to score when we need him to do most, though that can be said for the rest of the frontline.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/WC6vQCXn0NuW8TJO8uU2EqdhbiQc3ZZPwaIZALoR.png

Mikolaou deputised for Matuszczyk here ostensibly due to Matuszczyk's injured wrist (pussy) but NIkolaou was in better form anyway.
Not sure if the change kicked off our vastly improved efficiency, but hey I'll take it.
Even Eyheramonho scored! He's not had a good league campaign by any means so it was great to see him start the scoring (in the 1st minute of play no less).

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/lET1fVlE9ELPGHMrXuQmyuSn4OmESLB95ly0Zywa.png

Only the 2 games in the end of 2037, and we find ourselves firmly entrenched in the top half going into the 2nd half of the season.
Though let's be honest shit could still hit the fan, I'll be happy with hitting 40 points 1st like what Ranieri did.

Our Copa del Rey campaign has also started, beginning with a minnow for once in the form of Real Murcia:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/w0GeaIUQw5irWqLNUahZCrMuExFdgrfYvOL5JYUx.png

THough it didn't start well, Fernandez with yet another mistake to concede a penalty right at the start of the game.
But truth be told our superior ability was always going to shine through and we eventually levelled, Eyheramonho showing much better form in the cups than in the league, before Nikolaou staked his claim for the starting sole striker role with a superb hat-trick.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/R9xRYW8OBCceRwCXUzrO9oDZQ2q6cGVFepFDJIYB.png

Same story, except we played a further rotated team here.
Samuel came through from last March's youth intake, is a CB despite being only 178cm, and was making his competitive debut here, so to get a clean sheet and a goal to boot was an excellent 1st impression (not that he'll succeed here - that height as a CB is career suicide).

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/Kifl7NflVu4lyklnJ8xfAEcIYTfqLIJSiF976WNM.png

Huge test coming up, Sevilla are well, Sevilla - a lowkey world class Russian stopper at the back, an English striker up top, and a hell of a difficult team to beat.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/DRRNHWSAbE9Ma8lWa5xgIDwz1zQxNHgkZVHSWoIs.png

Now the final matchda of the Eurropa League group stage.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/DRRNHWSAbE9Ma8lWa5xgIDwz1zQxNHgkZVHSWoIs.png

This was another rotated team, but Freiburg looked so out of sorts that we gave them a bigger hammering than our 1st meeting.
We thoroughly outplayed them, they looked completely shot and it was never in doubt.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/eagbehTDYgyZwAFAQwLOWHFcJA9jOtkdi7627aZp.png

We were never going to nip Chelsea for top spot, but 2nd place is some achievement personally given how we lucked our way into this competition.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/GZLjb9dvy4UmQOH7RUpvqWMoKor4yExzaZBpsbIN.pnghttp://i.imgur.com/aYICVU2.png

Imagine, the opportunity to play OLDHAM, wow.
Jokes aside this Lens side, while not invincible, is definitely our toughest (realistic) challenge yet, so fingers crossed we get through and play OLDHAM.

A bit of news in America to end things off:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/0LrqwtgrWEXQLypCXUv8lJY1KmsatlRg8vbkta7S.png

What a difference 18 months make - from being transfer listed at Beijing Guoan to starting at a La Liga and being a starter for the US national team, it's been little short of perfect for Allen Bell.
Been linked to Barcelona too - they'll need to pay his release clause if they want him.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/obnMFf17PMuVKJwIJpWPtQnPfQkZ76fMfULuthFK.png

Fuck sake, we weren't getting much in the way of threats but we did look likely to hold the goalless draw - up to the 80th minute.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/obnMFf17PMuVKJwIJpWPtQnPfQkZ76fMfULuthFK.png

This game was the complete opposite, we ballsed up the start and it was uphill from then.
Didn't matter that we strived to reduce the deficit, because it turned out we couldn't shoot anyway.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/LOzcN0FCbMWpPf2FkiZfwkFpkxiUlCOBUv0X3O8s.png

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/ur6DAuXKpeYz7eslFL2I0Lo240HXsd6cdOGBzSzM.png

We really were in the pits after our straight losses and it wasn't getting any better when we went behind against Real.
Fortunately we always had the element of pace in Cristobal, and he delivered here for some vital respite.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/SNh90pKQ3FwVpla4I6UzbaHPULuFz0lWrmaX0lI6.png

FINALLY
Cristobal earned a start after his heroics in the previous game (but probably due to rotation) and repeated them here, as we ended the month on a high of sorts.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/w1DIuRA9Iy18DfBzZmILDmQYGnCoickOlULS29aG.png

After a wretched month we still find ourselves in the top half of the table - somehow.

Onto the Copa del Rey - if you think that our form in the league would have any effect in the cup then you'd be right:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/DRVWvEM5oGr72Zy8dkrAfIey3RiE067dn9dxFCuA.png

WHAT THE FUCK
Fucking hell I was celebrating when Eyheramonho scored in the 91st, you can't fucking do this to me.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/7YJzsdj9nzrVZaVw8AvrdfEXgfb99btoP5EKecvR.png

Having contrived to earn and lose a lead in stoppage fucking time I had virtually no expectations whatsoever, and I still ended up disappointed.
There's all the bullshit about how we fought well here, but the fact remains that in both legs stupid things we done and we don't really deserve to go through anyway as a result.

Oh and we've got 1 signing:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/D1b2bR03MGgO8uneCAHhSDZGIZPnwNKFrqZ3HEBL.jpg

Another defender on loan - not an inspired acquisition by any means but he can provide ever more cover in that DM area, which wil always help.

Anyway.... I'll have to admit that my time at Oviedo, while occasionally successful, hasn't been the most enjoyable - and I was considering looking for alternative employment after the season.
My interest was further piqued by this:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/YKBLUFWdHn8GbB7NFnPJlVCg4Yt9Qu4FUbPkB0Kr.png

I don't want any famous last words, but this does look like the fastest ticket to my 1st CL ever - and it'll be a tantalising prospect even if I'm not the most willing to change.

Read through the previous thread/story about Smouha the last couple of days, and was delighted to see that you been able to continue it here!

Impressed by your perseverance, going through all those seasons, and most of them not being shy of challenges.
Thank you for your persistence and style of writing

I think you deserve a chance at something bigger though, a team challenging for a top three finish in a decent league

Thanks so much mate, really appreciate the support

I really need a CL at this point (23 bloody seasons into a Pentagon Challenge) but I can't quite let go of my time at the clubs - there's always something about upgrading the facilities and bringing through the youths and the signings, there's always the hope that something of note can be done with these guys.
Really wish I'd stayed at Smouha to be honest, but when I lost to Orlando again I legitimately though they were nigh on invincible and I couldn't handle losing to that lot anymore.

February 2039

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/DKKBLSdnY2CPkLjSeqgnjY9i9wxQiweP3AnmCSRD.png

3 things in life are certain this season: death, taxes and losing to Sevilla - our 3th and probable final loss to them in all competitions this season, while even the only draw ended in an aggregate defeat.
I think we were jaded from our 3 previous encounters and couldn't break through to give them a last suckerpunch for the season.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/DErVjpF0jBObNjdAMQ8RoZVUeub98OFWewYuLYO0.png

Villareal had a change of manager (being rock bottom does that to clubs you know) and had a resurgence, recording consecutive wins (including a massive scalp in the form of Real Madrid) and they were a very dangerous proposition for any team.
Fortunately our defence was holding firm throughout and we managed to break them down eventually.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/WOSleb2vgXj2BNyjj46F1WMPc3ns0LpSiMjXPdmX.png

Ooh, definitely wasn't expecting this - a rotated team coming back from behind to beat Barca.
Didn't start well, we started with an attacking mentality and while we weren't under the cosh all the way but we couldn't get much in the way of play.
Half time saw a switch to Counter, which somehow worked, and our backline managed to see the game out for a vital 3 points.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/rE8JP39e7UvePF9cuWbkHtjt56vwVGLaUoybKukE.png

Another scalp of sorts, seems like we'd found some steel again.
The only bummer from this game would've to be Alava twisting his ankle - he'd only come on for the last 10 minutes and managed to get injured which'll keep him out for a month or so.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/IXH9hQndzsqjqxy3HMLBqehJz2Cv7X6aHOUKstiM.png

Above 50% this month, a massive improvement over the car crash that was January.
And still top half as well, delighted with that.

On to the Europa League, a 1st taste of French opposition for us :

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/9pMyYpZprQx9joWahkS07JXxpyaxx17bzqGvYmhM.png

Fairly even game, either side could've won but we managed to take our chances here and they didn't.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/yTEfxC27g7W38upWI1TLAP6GvC1XlRFoZ3q6ylWs.png

Nikolaou was magnificent here, even if he did miss a virtual sitter for his hat trick.
In any case this 1st half was one of the most efficient shooting I've seen from us, while the performance as a whole was one of the best this season - would've been the best had we not put 4 past Freiburg - twice - and 7 at Midtylland's place.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/zPxU3sHcGjyb6KXok8BLMnuqtLyMrIEL7qhnzFW8.png

Another relatively unknown quantity, but if real life is anything to go by they're a bit shit, a yoyo-esque club hanging around in Serie A.
Then again Oviedo were on the brink of extinction, and yet here we are.

Thank you yourself, I'm unable to play FM14 (why switch to newer versions if you have a grand save going on right?) myself ATM (cooling issues) so you've sort of scratched my FM itch with your saga here, hehe

By all means, when you've sunk that amount of time and energy into a club, it can be difficult to turn your back on it and leave.
I've set myself some goals in my save, but also have an adventurous side, always coming up with new ambitions, so I've "solved" it with having multiple managers(one shameless journeyman).
Though, solved and "solved", since this lead to the seasons taking way longer than they probably should

Pity that you missed out on Oldham though

I'm currently playing it on a 3-year old Toshiba laptop in which the screen no longer works, the thermal paste thingy has probably gone to pot and the battery no longer has it primary function - and I definitely won't wish a 20-season Pentagon save on my new one (not for FM14 anyway, FM17 maybe )

Honestly how do you even go about managing so many teams? I used to take U21 sides and even that was too much of a hassle to juggle alongside my club job, at most I'll take a U23 side (Olympics and Asian Games for instance, short tourneys).

Should've rotated the team, but I'd erroneously though that there was a European game on so that was the priority.
Not sure if that was the reason for our struggles here, but this won't be the prettiest game this season, but the scoreline... Well you'll see.

Before that, during training after the Granada game:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/bAKYMvRUBtp9WVrOrMCmoSXhpUA9t7UfR5Wzkh8R.png

Why would I need to replace him? What could've happened?

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/XYQ7Jamu7K73fRsjgSYzzs9hzW5wKTJ88SzkTi6U.png

OHHHHH FUCK
Even I feel sorry for him, and he's not even real!
It made Studentovic's even more of a vital one on hindsight.
https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/MD8nNumoCIy1380ftHhv4ftSNRNECblfd3LXnWYh.png

As a result he had to be cut loose, but it'd suit all the parties involved.
An unexpected beneficiary of this was our Brazilian AM Luis, who was unable to secure a spot in the registered squad in January, but has been added fr cover for the unavailable Alava and the retiring Akaev.

Failed to capitalise on our lead, and as a result we had to watch our backs for the remainder of the game.
Studenovic scored tough, so there's a plus especially in light of the Conte situation.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/LWDUkVUxQTC74PV5Wpx4olEVVpwNuCGqCKV9vcFy.png

Could and should've done more for this game, we had periods of consistent control but there was a relative lack of penetration, and by the time Celta went down to 10 they were all but content to see out the draw.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/ptw77aWgzqHMYxKKWw0Bpo9BYcGx4qe16tk5m1Xt.png

A great way to end off the month, Luis showing superb technique to net the opener, before Nikolaou fired in a clinical treble.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/zt6ahQZdyIfYzZ82yyAqKoDVp1xY2g7POHnWiFt1.png

An unbeaten month, but also one that yielded only 50% points and a probable career-ending injury.
But it gets us 7th spot, which given that the Copa del Rey final pits the Madrid giants together, virtually guarantees Europa League football.

Speaking of which:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/PPY8eyGT6vTQmC2bsq637u0fDNFym0rZONpKef1L.png

We came back from a goal down to lead and had an answer to their 1st equaliser, and it looked like we would be able to secure victory (albeit with the burden of a couple of away goals).
But we could have no answer to their 2nd equaliser, or their eventual winner.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/YtvVxAFQ9DksyUNDqS6V2ZuLlMqX6GBE2L79zzfj.png

We had to go on the offensive here - Camilo opened the scoring to give us a glimmer of hope, but we were pegged back soon after.
We needed to go on the attack anyway, so we did, but we met some dogged defending, and it was they who eventually sealed the tie on the counter.
No complaints though, Bologna showed that they were a more capable side than us in both legs.
Fun fact too, both teams' goalkeepers were Albanians - you don't see that everyday (except in Albania obviously).

We end off with the annual youth intake:

Yeah that's a terrible injury, worst part is that it's also the last season of his contract with PSG, which means he was playing with us for a new deal.

Yeah I'd watched that, it's pretty cool to be able to own a part of a club, and to know you played a part in saving it from extinction.

And apologies for not updating, Uni's been a bitch and now that I've given up on that ( ) I've finally got round to getting this on again.

Ooo a comfortable victory, and we managed to keep their Italian hotshot quiet.
Nikolaou is really stepping up as well, which we'll need seeing that Matuszczyk could well be on the wane (overreaction).

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/ALVo1iojTcHNS2Ikjej4lwR4NCMUEJH8CvaQQuqF.png

I'm really glad we managed to win this, Elche have the capacity to give us an absolute hiding (as they did in the past) and now that we're chasing a European spot a capitulation is not needed to say the least.
That said we did concede 1st, but it just allowed us to show our ability to come back from behind, with the winner coming from Nikolaou again.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/S4ftFjin7UQ4ZZwQaykV1WPT0o1Jl7DiTD2ZBn6U.png

Marc Tienda marked a rare start with a howitzer for the lead, a goal which also won him the goal of the week.
Unfortunately we weren't able to get more against a capable Espanyol side, and even after our efforts following Bell's OG we couldn't find a way through.
Tienda endured a sour end to his productive night by earning a second yellow, not that it stopped him from gettting the MoTM nod.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/KUnyDvil2cbZvfpH0AdjPihoah55rPx0Ta6qPE1Y.png

Sporting were playing for their La Liga lives here, and it really was written in the script that they earn a vital win is no less an occasion than a derby.
That they did set out to do, and we matched them to a man.
They went off to a great start, rode that wave despite conceding a leveller to go into the interval in the lead, and could well have put the game beyond doubt with the penalty.
It missed, we took that close call and quickly equalised, before Nikolaou turned saviour yet again with another late winner.

In came May, 4 games left, and let's just say our opposition wasn't going to roll over:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/YmPT9rRlwxDhQiQwSDDqMiaXZfFHZdqW5q6QYwpe.png

Bilbao were actually behind us at 7th at this time (yes we were 6th!) so it was imperative we didn't lose - firstly because we'd fall to 7th, 2nd because of our wretched run of games to play out the season, and lastly because who likes to lose??
But I digress - things seemed to be going swimmingly for us initially, having the opener handed to us and playing a a man more as Bilbao looked to self-destruct.
That dismissal seemed to have triggered something in both teams though - they started having so much more of the ball (even more so as a team with only 10 men) while we didn't look capable (or willing) to get it off them.
Eventually they turned the game on its head and earned a 2-goal lead, while we continued to put in a sterile showing, and Bell's late effort only served to add a sense of closeness to the scoreline.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/o5dcu1h0Db76VKIKbvD1Rp6WlM3OFm7ionU29ujG.png

I think you've beginning to see what I meant - now the chase for 7th was on, and Valencia were not going to miss out without a hell of a fight.
Another meek performance was we contrived to go 2 down, and Akaev's goal was the only serious opportunity for us.

The penultimate game pitted us against Real Sociedad (another team in the chasing pack) and while we were still in that 7th place, we'd also taken a bit of a battering at a vital time and it wasn't going to get any better here.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/8mHaqZl8GYxUS6nmcY3umTw366ZzRuprMRNYkOsO.png

Or so I thought - great performance here, ran rings around them at theirs', keeping ex-winger on the fringes of the game while our own wingers ran riot with them diagonal runs between the channels.
Well that pretty much secured the Europa League spot, so all that was left was the closer against CL-bound Real Betis (see I tould you it was going to be a tough end to the season):

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/nwGubS17oGckyDineCOR3jXAuqPowpQ8fA0s8eFA.png

Well that was a smash and grab if I've ever seen one, terrific tekkers from Vargas there.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/WZpMf6c11wBSfOiGN6Bf3fe3E7jtjRdqNJBUW7g9.png

So yes we made it to Europe yet again, and this time we didn't rely on a fluke cup run.
For better or worse rivals Sporting went down, so no league derbies next season.
What is definitely worse is Rayo still managing to stay up, seems like that they'll never go down so long they've got that Italian striker on their books.

June - August 2038

Players of the Season:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/UwT3r1uibenyFauvWEsYhBqKI2q9B40vMdxrGzWS.jpg

Nikolaou is going from strength to strength, and this season he's shown to have stepped out of Matuszczyk's shadow, deputising spectacularly when the latter was injured.
Virtually guaranteed the 1st choice striker at this point, and not only on form (as you'll see).

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/9tpj6cBeko9xe28DBQm8fz1REHbx6IOUu6bY88cy.png

Earned his first cap for Greece as well, recognition for his current form.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/1Sp7ls8vnhrVdkrw7ic3z6EqaQvvQMXsZ0pzvFeB.jpg
https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/a03tkpoZ0BNLbKEnmMALM3NotNN14VvBxZAt1Egi.png

Alava is still the main creative force in the team, and despite not influencing games the way a playmaker is expected to do all the time he racked up plenty of assists, owing to his AMC role which allows him to play the final pass.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/jH4cKl6jXny4IQMj6iswWkhnRoJwSATd23wHjGcc.jpg

Marcos Vargas is an odd one, he did have very poor games (his shooting is very inconsistent in particular), but when he gets going he can be an absolute beast of a player.
And it's safe to say he did tear in up in Europe, 10 assists/goals in 7 appearances speaks for itself.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/0phlChYcvkUEaTe9uNTTTY5WdMZ2AggBxs5HK9nh.jpg

Eyheramonho is an odd one - while he was consistently decent in the Europa League he endured a wretched start to the league campaign, which at least helped me with rotations (since it was obvious he couldn't hack it domestically anyway).
But towards the end of the season he started to improve - a great end to the campaign where he contributed 2 goals and 3 assists in his last 4 games.
He might not be the best, but under the right circumstances he can prove to be a solid squad player.

Post/Preseason:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/U595Lu9Jq0FDevC0iYSqLw2odja3BHVNcqJgYJbZ.png

It's not easy being rich, and it's even harder when I can't cook the books.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/QnIljCSD2XAHKvh0qz5SxFXhzHWmLAxSlkTKjh3e.png

Though at least we aren't falling foul of FFP, I'll take that moral high ground with both hands.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/pM3TSuOeiiak3v0mx7oikRBrFD2h7hJ5RGEnRV04.png

Yeah, though it's going to be hard to emulate this the next time round.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/o5AGCseGkElJ16AB1jCNbFVOZxTmuBhw41otDLuP.png

OOOO TOP 60 BABY
And it's good to see that we've managed to keep up our rep up, hopefully I'll be able to acquire players who will keep us from inevitably getting relegated.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/0NwTVyZXqXfESPjviS11rpxMHX4weOcE1CzzsRQ0.png

Hmm... I suppose he did do well, but he didn't really stand out as far as I could tell.
Or maybe that's just how defenders are viewed, not much.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/f181y26NiJoL1jqjXZzH1il5d7cCLeAvPbYW22cc.png

Genuinely surprised Eyheramonho was rated 2nd best transfer - yes he was free, but surely they could've found a new player who had a better season?
Might've taken into his account his Europa League exploits, but then again this is La Liga's season review, so...

But I digress - Transfers:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/TR4TBi1SWBquwiiO38Q1hNe5XuSa3pFlGfKGq1ck.png

A bit of upheaval this season, a couple of veterans and favourites have departed and in come a couple of (hopefully) upgrades.
Well you all know Studenovic, so here are the others:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/8WEUC4sXEZCgENW3prlYQJ2D5vc2aNF5v2qLhgPw.png

The marquee signing this season, Sakib Dincel has got some cracking attributes to play up front - speed, strength and aerial prowess with an uncanny ability to ping a hell of a pass.
Matuszczyk and Tienda go the other way - the former will always be a cult hero around these parts for his 1st 2 seasons, though he eventually got bogged down by injuries and an increasingly obvious lack of speed, and a change of environment and more forgiving opposing defences will do him a world of good.
Tienda.... he used to play a more than decent part of our 1st choice midfield but he too eventually found himself on the fringes of the squad.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/5XSYZPqSCluf6Gj7A0UsTqOXcB9T5wuNQcPzUlHB.png

Panagiotou - basically the Cypriot Tim Cahill.
Seriously though, great pace, technically proficient, he might not have much room for improvement but he's got some ability already.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/aVOAO43aOFvdoY9Gjtyk4EulD07G7d6k4f2hLDT7.png

I've had my eye on Jankulica for the past 3 seasons or so, a tidy passer with both feet could become a key fixture if things pan out.
Now 3 seasons have passed, he's got a couple of injuries which seem to have stunted his growth (as did the decision to stay in Croatia).
But he's here, a punt on him which could yet bear fruit.

Of the outs, Muniz and Carreno were a GK and LB respectively, both were backups with only a year left on their deals.
Samuel was a hot defensive prospect with an unfortunate weakness, only 178cm - so he was flogged off the the 1st bidder who was dumb enough willing to take the risk.

Preseason:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/gY5LHdkj3etdmb67tJLoOtABTTKkWal6f0TVI3yr.png

Unbeaten, though that was practically mandatory given the standard of our opposition.

Now for some actual competitive football, the Europa League 3rd qualifying round:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/vAhT842Lx3zWNsbhhkDTCzDFs0OhpGXFpmxG4KdA.png

It was either Domzale of Iceland's FH, not that it mattered anyway on the back of this 1st leg.
Eyheramonho continued his great European form here, helping us to a 4-goal lead going into the 2nd leg in Slovenia.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/uWOJUaGK2uVK8g3HrP0J1wQoVLjAITfiprhGl0NM.png

An exercise in futility, in fact it was made even more futile with Diallo tearing his groin muscle.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/PJb6Lcpjt9MsvAY3mQN5mEWXqb4rRor6e4wkzkxD.png

Aberdeen! Nice to be able to go to Scotland, even if we'll have to go to their shit stadium (Pittodrie reference anyone?)

Back to domestic affairs:

http://i.imgur.com/a8ggSnu.png

Middle-tier bonuses, no need to up the stakes on anything if we aren't challenging for any honours.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/GSQCubgf0p1dIIwpDN8rzWjPiy41xqBWDgrX8X2b.png

And looks like the bookies agree - a bottom half finish would do just fine, just don't fuck up and get relegated.

As good a start to the season as I could ask for, beating an Elche who can tear teams apart on thei day.
Our current fit starting forwards both netted too, Nikolaou's being by far the more impressive tally obviously.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/FiZdmADN9KbkGjrnNpDW02eRDPryAEoAZn7ocyKY.png

The 1st half was one of the best I've seen from the lads, a shame that they nearly blew that lead in the 2nd half.
Still, a win is a win.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/iQFVDpuDGJs3Bek0qJr4I3gXmTMWIvHS2SNf4hUj.png

Unlike the next game, where we failed to avenge our loss to Bilbao at the tail end of last season.
Athletic always had the upper hand in this encounter, dominating possession and having the lion's share of chances, but it's still a pity we couldn't hold on to the draw.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/bgj2GgJCNAWuc0RKfKv5S0zUHIhesCKfSek0YXfq.png

2 wins from 3, could've been worse.
What's surprising are newly-promoted Getafe - with a perfect record so far they'll be a very dangerous proposition in our next match.

Onto the Europa League Playoff:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/GpdvkrpsSAEDscbls2c50SsLSDb0xlSQqJi1fAKI.png

Gave a couple of the youth prospects and fringe players a run out here, and we definitely made things difficult for ourselves out there.
But it's still 2 away goals to bring back to Spain, so the ball is very much in our court (or field, if you will).

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/2sWIgduB3Y6n2JL4pSTFoz5mlVFOkyexyxQlvWq2.png

Aberdeen stuck to their guns of playing on the break despite needing a win here, and it nearly worked out well - for every goal we had they had an answer to, and the nerves were beginning to creep in as time wore on.
Fortunately Cristobal gave them a taste of their own medicine with a late goal of his on the counter, and we eventually confirmed our participation in the group stages.

And here they are:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/297PBP8IMOfi6wpzYiHyJq8ugEiKsoW6AlI5yiLY.pnghttps://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/10anxV9CQltquxvizKGrCvNxUdj2VZasPkVVR3o2.pnghttps://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/YXm8PKhL9OZ8VM0Q7QjNnnQiWE4sX0xRwIVHxhin.png

I doubt Zeljeznicar will be as much of a pushover as Tbilisi were last season, while Gronigen won't be an easy proposition either.
The main attraction is obviously Liverpool, as with Chelsea last season I'm not expecting to finish above them.

Since you got to play in Europe again, 7th is a decent finish(even if one always dreams higher)

Always nice to get recognized too, congrats on the most improved title!

Was a little surprised to see Matuszczyk go, as I thought his stats was wild enough when you first got him, but if he's injured too often/too much and Nikolaou was able to slide right into his place...it might just work out better.
And the replacement you exchanged him for looks more than decent, low concentration, but at an age where he still can develop. Cypri-Cahill looks promising too!

PS: Two small questions, "Obolon-..." in Group C...Ukrainian side? Never heard of, never mind seen at that level before
Also, what happened to your club logo? I mean, everyone else in the Primera has theirs shown, but not Oviedo?

Aye, Obolon-Brewer - they don't seem to have (or had) a sugardaddy, looks like they managed to get promoted and establish themselves as a solid Ukrainian side the hard way.

Unfortunately Matuszczyk's replacement and Panagiotou were both injured in preaseason and missed the entirely of the season thus far.
In fact Panagiotou's been registered with the reserves at the moment (couldn't wait for him to recover, so Luis was picked instead) and he'll only be available in the EL for the next couple of months.

Oh and I've just changed laptops, not got around to installing logo/facepacks yet

Boom! Got Getafe to sit their asses down, fancy the newly promoted side trying to tear up the form book
We didn't have too much of the ball, but we played the counterattacking game to a T and well, the scoreboard speaks for itself.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/Oq9nKkvB4aU1d4Ty0aYeJ5Ea0QHg1itPSLxZOfUe.png

Dire game, not that we were not ever likely going to score against Sevilla's GK going by past encounters.
We managed to win, though not exactly of our own doing...
That said it's not like Sevilla's attack was any better on the day, so it's basically who deserved to lose the least.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/K8G3Qd2RuORtIXT15diPpaAcv2Y6eW4YNcMya6CQ.png

The narrow 4-2-3-1 haunts us once more, another ridiculous pass-and-go move bamboozled our backline and left Maiquez with only the keeper to beat, and they don't miss those.
We could've done much more to close down their wingbacks, but it'dve blunted our attack even more since the fullbacks needed to help close the channels down by playing narrowly.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/zgvH1TgmbHtfdyEqdlzDoHn0ZUgAYamqpfQlez1q.png

Las Palmas weren't at the races at all, but we weren't able to capitalise on that and put more than a solitary goal past them.
I'd try to put a positive spin on it and go 'at least we didn't slip up against a minnow' but that's clutching at straws when they were this poor.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/262Tni4aTgqS3ltbgPV7tSHazpIdA55mRVHvo5kz.png

Top 4 currently, but we haven't actually played any of the really good sides yet, so I'm not harbouring any hope that this'll last.

Now for the continent:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/zrh3pZfVWIEhgsB5IUWeQu8lNJgWe2EK4zbAdIig.png

Definitely thought I could get away with playing a rotated side against Groningen - in a way we kind of did, but this could well look like dropped points come Matchday 6.
Yes it's an away game, but last season we managed 2 wins against Freiburg which went some way to securing an easy path to the knockout rounds.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/d2O8JnBFhpaRBm3VUoWtvZeJGkEhNK6KlZXwObfI.png

Like Las Palmas, Zeljeznicar were never going to win here, but it did look like we weren't going to actually score, such was the state our our shooting boots.
Szeman eventually got us ahead, but that didn't to open the floodgates - well not in the way that a side of our calibre should've.
But a win is a win, we did nearly slip up against Tbilisi last season as well.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/iIBBgmwMYMJUNsbZDgtbTPRwXd3E0e87xbJp1QWw.png

Huge shock as Groningen get their hardest fixture out of the way 1st, with a very credible draw against Liverpool.
We'll need to match that or we could find ourselves praying for Zeljeznicar to play a blinder against them at least once.

October 2038

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/52qweYiDAqnVQAHTZ4Ed5BqBdjbdFSUVpBJCiae0.png

A magnificent debut for Sakib Dincel, who playing in the AMC role behing Nikolaou was able to show his scoring prowess.
A header, a clinical finish and a long-range freekick - he can really be the complete package on his day.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/Qk6VZzJL28fgNW9cuhhfvm6evgeRULwMS3hz6CON.png

I'dve punched out my screen if I wasn't already laughing at our ineptitude - while we weren't on the front foot by any means we at least had a lead against thr run of play and could've built on that on the counter.
That we did do, but again our inability to finish our chances (or keep onside) would prove to be our undoing.
But I certainly didn't expect the goals that were conceded - first Szeman contrived to rifle the ball into his own net after a shot hit both posts, and Curri got completely caught out by a free kick a la Lehmann in the last game at Highbury, before Garrido volleyed in from the halfway line from Curri's own clearance.
Terrible way to concede 3 goals.

Not that it was an indicator for what was about to happen next:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/mJvU3y3LcdQR11al7ePfpMoOiqzcBaYN6bglqLLk.png

It's just a perfect storm really, their centrebacks never ever seemed to have any understanding and Nikolaou ran riot between them.

http://i.imgur.com/apwg6WO.png

Oh.
Joke's on us here, giving Real an absolute hiding before failing to beat minnows Hercules.
Our fitness ran very thin here and they took advantage of our fatigue to snatch a late, late equaliser - though they shouldn't even have stayed in the contest, so many chances and we couldn't see the game out.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/3pxYbUJNUi1o3IAP6GHjK8zsE63PsKytNkdInrWu.png

Oh man, this looked like we were going to end the month in a rut with 2 consecutive winless games.
We were favourites before the game and played like it, but like against Hercules did not make full use of our dominance.
We continued to pour forward even after conceding (we had to) and eventually Cristobal earned a penalty (which somewhat made up for his wasteful shooting, somewhat) and Szeman dispatched the equaliser.
Bell then followed up from his defensive partner and headed win a crucial winner to help end the month on a high at least.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/tN6mPqI968fwrpBxG8x2Vbcg3n1cgIe6zxWCvvpj.png

Still 4th amazingly, though I hope the Real game wasn't a one-off and we can actually give the top sides a real run for their money.

Now to the Europa League - only 1 game this month:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/FQddLTYlpBEoPxI06eBc8AxYJvH7jcXvVdlwmNkJ.png

Otal gave us a shock lead against the run of play, but they were always going to assert their dominance in the game and once they found their leveller we were going to have to defend, hard.
And we did, with Studenovic showing up at the right time to deliver a MoTM performance at the back.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/kYEctv7qItlclD5gD1x8l7AV7ZQw70AFIF3rQwkm.png

For some reason we're top, it's probably because we've actually scored goals in both games in our mini-league.
Definitely not expecting an easy ride though, Groningen will most likely pad their goal difference against Zejleznicar, while Liverpool will be baying for blood after the dropped points in our reverse fixture.

Ah, its great knocking the bigger teams with underdogs

And then, of course, the annoying slip-ups against lesser teams (with strikers blowing 8-10 clear cut chances over the bar yadayada)

I like to think that I've played enough FM to grow accustomed to this, but man it always gets to me every time my team balls things up.

Ah, the Celta bogeyman strikes again - granted we played an understrength team to account for fatigue, but we should have done much better against a Celta side in relegation trouble.
Alas we were apparent second fiddle to them, who despite setting up in a 4-4-1-1 were in control all game.
And we'd have lost too had it not been for a fortunate setpiece, which resulted in an OG that we probably didn't deserve.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/XgZHGZIF4MHyDBWysHyhSmKFQxnQfPjokbtd1PDo.png

Oh man this was hard going - we got really, really long to get going (no shots in the 1st 30 minutes) and Real took full advantage with 2 goals going into the break.
After some hairdrying in the dressing room the team came out with a bit more end product - 1 goal to be precise, but a side of Real's calibre knows how to hold on to leads.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/Funba2dxvQGTf3tj7m9nJAaujX8FOC3KAXfF0a21.png

Another insipid performance against a team who were content sit back and play for the draw.
Trying to play the ball to their third was very difficult, with their midfield doing an exemplary job cutting out our through passes.
And it looked like were going to drop points yet again, but cometh the hour, cometh the man - supersub Lucas Eyheramonho.
Stoppage time, he gets the ball, speeds past the opposing RB and unleashes a howitzer from the edge of the area to secure a 1st victory this month.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/JUuNaSUnkkYB5rm4pmwVWMlwUdBFlS92Tk6y0VZV.png

So only 4 points from 9, but we somehow stay in the top 4.
Next up in the league is Atletico as well - we beat them and we underline our title credentials, we lose and it's 5th and below for us.

Next up is crunch time in the Europa League - 1st up, Liverpool at home.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/4aHZ8VHkZe2PKNR7fXyGgQXUWeN9LSeYTAwMUyXM.png

Pool were missing their 1st-choice defensive partnership, and we took full advantage, NIkolaou and Dincel combining spectacularly to assist each other's goals.
It's been really surprising to find Dincel playing with Nikolaou as well - he was signed as competition, but he seems to have been far more comfortable playing off the frontman.
Though if he wasn't taking Nikolaou's spot he had to take someone else's - that of club captain Fernando Alava, who's still by far the most creative element in the team, but isn't on par with Dincel physically.

So with this win we at least could count ourselves ahead of Liverpool in head-to-head, so all we had to do was to not do too badly against Groningen.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/Q0FtXGIHWvmLeJ56BJJUkJVY79XoUqU02UVRvPHV.png

Wait, I'll go one better - well 5 better.
We had a slightly tentative start, and were worried about Groningen's narrow midfield diamond pulling us out of position.
We eventually did score, Vargas finishing off a peach of a cross from Eyheramonho, but then had to be wary of Groningen's insistence on having their striker playing off the last man - Szeman did a fantastic job of neutralising those efforts for the most part.
That said, when we did score again, we made sure we capitalised on it, eventually putting the game out of their sights.
And while they did score a consolation, it's not like defences can copy perfectly when strikers are going full Inzaghi on you for 90 minutes - something's bound to slip through.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/iHKPxJNBQlCupFugCgYOScvZ7avhgKpCE09LTVpf.pnghttps://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/WXJ2VQoYbHHk55iRhUQt1F75WwqIV8XAIx8NPpwu.png

\o/
I think it's confirmed top spot for us as well, having a superior record over both of the other 2 means that we can't be bested in head-to-head.
So we go through as group winners, hope that we can ride on that and get an easier draw in January.

Vargas got us the lead with a sumptuous lob on the counter, but even without our opener Atleti were always going to go for the attack, and after falling behind they basically lay siege on our goal.
They eventually got an equaliser, then the winner, as we failed to prove any title credentials here.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/TZpwCfvP7Oav3eOIhNuHdnnZ0hl5vUa56jsq2bef.png

Trained on set-piece defending, concede from a set-piece - no matter, I'm sure we will be able to come back from that, particularly since they've got a 16-year old at LB.
We proceed to have yet another shitshow at shooting.
It's bad enough when the strikers are missing the target, it's bad enough when the wingers choose to hit the side netting instead of crossing, but an RB? When his crossing is far superior to his shooting ability and I've got 2 giants in the penalty area? C'mon, that's just idiotic.
The worst part of this was again losing to Valencia - they've been struggling this season and we've never been able to beat them, so now was as good an opportunity to get one over them.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/EEFYsB2vMihVaJyXBsaH5ourejldOQ9h5C57HHPZ.png

It's been a nightmare month and a bit in the league, from an outside chance of CL football to (potentially) looking at 12th spot.
Next up is Barca as well, our overachievement so far will go to pot if we lose (which we probably will).

Enough of that though, let's go through the more positive stuff - the Copa Del Rey is back on, and for our 1st round we met Albacete.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/lAlWUOcyLlpApmcbWQytNGb0gTTjrxh50z8av0u4.png

We were probably never in any trouble, though their GK was seemingly unstoppable before we eventually got our 1st, and Artur Silva ballsed up a back pass to let them have a goal back.
But the sheer superiority of our attack inevitably shone through, Dincel the rightful MotM with 2 goals and 3 assists.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/WGm6AUhn4ZEpCDgLO76GFvCF9szUgfZGYIdHA59f.png

A non contest - a rotated squad ran this game out, while Cristobal and Panagiotou both scored impressive lobs.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/mjhAgiL4AqtSCoGq0qvkgxxMdnsRwhXtSg7UxLUE.png

Urgh, we'll probably lose this one to be honest - our record against Betis is patchy at best, and our current form doesn't scream 'form-book tearing' if I'm honest.

Now to another cup competition:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/LA1De3Ti60evGupB0Llyn6akZriPyEmaro0aNsQY.png

Again another dead rubber, no real worries here.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/WvUDJS2IjBoVoizNH8mZGcZDnMBiOo4FW2qcPCKr.png

And yes, top of the group! Though of bigger significance is arguably the outright elimination of Liverpool here - they didn't seem to play their best teams against us and Groningen, and they paid for it.

What of our next opponents then?

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/cJXCYxz1nGqtbIlPuTk2OlYiMVYcPSNznY6a59Bv.png

Not too bad, we should expect going through to the next round, where we will meet...

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/luvLIY5cgUor8Fb6dmmidvMVlAytcAU0cBummoBt.png

Shit.
It's far from ideal, these 2 teams - either I get one who'll clearly be hellbent on revenge after the group stage thumping, or I get one who I've not been able to beat consistently.

I'd like to finish on a brighter note though:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/Kiy1syFw9Q1pAbu28FLvugMYlaOIgeNEh3qaiIpB.png

Nice to see a defender get some recognition, it's high time he had some given the amount of time he's played (and excelled) in La Liga.

Our poor form continues, and it's Barca so that didn't help.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/z1SuxLXN5Kh5MoqC2YfhRokr2w7IWo5O3UW9H5mL.png

I no longer feel anything.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/tjuc1SWz6RTcdB96rsUzvCrJaTKUbtcJ7gRzBqws.png

Finally a win after our absolutely wretched run, with Dincel being the hero in the lone striker role.
Also, have you guys gotten those news posts where you get a win after finally changing tactics? It's annoying how it's as if a tactical change was the sole catalyst of our win - I mean it could be, but come on.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/WGuGywjsixnA0f1iES3kjMXjOA6q2E954sDyIlv6.png

There was some absolutely awful defending here, we derserved to lose by the sheer shambles of our backline alone.
For some reason Elche also managed to capitulate as well, which allowed us to regain some pride.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/ZHppUc269ioaYKpaef28olQ43Xv3dgjqKcrNijSW.png

Oh look we still can't beat Bilbao, gonna be great news for when we meet them later on in the Europa League.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/Uvz5YmoHKpCpplYqMwk6oOJnP8c5w9uL6sh4zH35.png

A hellish couple of months has seen us tumble down the table into the bottom half, with little to no respite in sight.
There's still half a season to go though, so I do hope we can at least claw our way back up the table and hopefully snag another European spot.

On to the Copa del Rey:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/0VQAKo09HT20g6hUquIeghsmRN2v7h5XeDG6ike2.png

Bore draw, neither side could shoot, and we were much more afraid of losing another game so we'd take a stalemate.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/BoA3XXF6uxQRS9miTbZXgNqfLFYC6DvjyRnFIXHT.png

Turned out it didn't matter, we were so rubbish with defending set pieces that we should lost by more here.
So that's us out of the cup, and out of the top half of the league - great times.

Let's end the month on a positive, fuck knows I need one:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/iXxb9i8YG2FpiQ6ECQa9Ohqq7t6RbkFy30SogGv2.png

YES HE'S BACK
Well not really, he's still a couple of weeks from recovering from his horror injury, so he'll spend the rest of the season recuperating and regaining match fitness with the B-Team before we evaluate his readiness for the senior squad next season.
And I'd love to have him back into the fold, it feels like I owe him this one considering he suffered his nightmare leg breaks here, which probably led to the non-renewal of his PSG deal.

Sometimes, during matches, were my team is absolutely dominating and bombarding the oppositions goal, but not breaking in (and opposition scores instead), I try to switch tactics, typical from a narrow formation to a wider formation (or the opposite), sometimes it works.
In general though, I don't switch tactics too often, stick with the familiar 3, but I might mix things up for special games; like aggregate cup games and six pointers.
But that's me, and I'm certainly no tactical god. I will admit, I use some downloaded tactics that I've tweaked a bit to fit my tastes or the players I have available...

A pity that you hit bad form and tumbled down the table! Sometimes the games seems to decide that you've done too well and really pile the misery on you :-/
But I see that you had the same fortune that I had lately; struggle to win games in the league against mediocre teams, but thrash stronger (on paper) teams in (European) cups.
But I've had the opposite too, some domestic cups seems to rigged against me

By the way, do you loan out your future prospects? IMO this is an essential way to develop youngsters and also save/make money.

I'm (embarrassingly given the number of hours I've put into the series) a bit clueless when it comes to changing tactics in-game, most of the time I stick with the same formation and hope for a supersub effect.
In any case I'm looking to employ a 5-3-2 more often instead of the usual 4-2-3-1.
Anyway, if I change my formation to something that the team's not familiar with isn't that counterproductive? When the players aren't well-versed with the positioning and instruction?

By the way, do you loan out your future prospects? IMO this is an essential way to develop youngsters and also save/make money.

I've been wanting to loan my players our to Augsburg (a feeder team of ours incredibly), they've got Superb training and youth facilities - which we've only caught up to only this season.
Thing is they've been in the third tier for some time (probably why I was able to secure them for our feeder team) so my youths don't want to play in a third tier.
Fortunately they seem to be able to win promotion to the 2. Bundesliga so fingers crossed their reputation will finally be sufficiently raised.

Baby steps on the road to recovery, but it's annoying that we couldn't hold on to the lead, especially against Sevilla - would've been a coup.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/zcSViQQY0dIEPGQasVyKDFCGO7ETGAOlX5eI7KYu.png

OH FOR FUCKS SAKE
It's annoying enough that we were nigh on completely toothless in front of goal, it's bad enough that we couldn't at least hold on to the lead, but we were pegged back only by virtue of a controversial penalty, which the FA seemed to agree with when I complained about it.

http://i.imgur.com/a49pBIx.png

Well we were also firing blanks for the most part against Las Palmas, but hey, at least, at least we didn't lose here.
Honestly though, we have real problems in front of goal it seems.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/RgelskbKzOfJ3zQa0iZy3IghUwpUg3jl3GOoksEu.png

Finally, revenge for our cup loss against Betis.
And it's not like we were 'more clinical' here, Betis just contrived to be less clinical in front of goal than us - as shown by our centrebacks scoring both goals.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/lTAAeYKs4IEIj5AnVRjiYogVHasKr5V34Z1zrKDk.png

Finally, another sight of the top half.
Though bearing in mind that we've lost to 6 of the top 7 (and more crucially all of Bilbao, Barca and Espanyol), it's far too early to speak of a chase for a European spot.

Speaking of Europe, we're still in the Europa League remember:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/0T1nnJ7zZEUU4L9mhcFlY6vBStxwEhMkVDKla5R2.png

Again, woefully inaccurate shooting here against a side that we clearly dominated.
We do have an away goal to bring back to Spain, so there's that.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/oVoPmzRtZfvu9Wg9sFYApcLPbb6jC1UNZy4AcLQ6.png

Excellent, finally something resembling a proper attacking performance - Dincel with another hattrick and Otal with a goal after being absolutely hopeless in the 1st leg.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/m2geW1medCgMpPHj9LWgtLHYagPoZFVjtZkwgLqr.png

Wow, they beat Bilbao it seems.
Which isn't good news in any case, being able to beat Bilbao and a desire to avenge the group stage thrashing? That's a hell of a recipe for disaster for us.

Finally, we actually had a couple of loan signings that I'd forgotten to mention last time:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/vqO4tD5fGVhk2C6Q0K7jFXojXT1MFmpBOxW9nUd8.png

Stojanovic is by no means the best in the business, but at a time when Eyheramonho was out for 2 months he had to suffice as cover on the left wing.
He's a bit slow, but his left peg is more than decent and could deliver decent crosses to the like of Nikolaou and Dincel.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/39GdIKhE88XR15bDIsvPD3SxLBbEN1qNa7NBHl8n.png

Despite being a utility man and being paid a relative pittance Armas was still transfer listed by Villareal - shows you he good he must be.
Still, he's got a Spanish passport and can cover multiple positions so he'll have to do.

A struggle, but eventual victory against cellar-dwellers Alaves.
The 3-5-2 was used here again, and it's clearly still a work in progress.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/CH8HM3N15b4la0MXMsCBoNA3I9FJoSS8U8ssa0z0.png

A 2nd shot at the 3-5-2, though it's more of my (yet again) overly defensive mentality that caused the team to only absorb pressure - once we went behind there was only one outcome.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/BaXCDdeMuQPU6YOmGebzQnq2ueEmVDgqfaryUg4x.png

Ok, a last attempt at the formation this month, and the most disappointing one of the month.
I tried a more proactive approach here, looking to close down opponents more aggressively - unfortunately that only caused the centrebacks to find themselves regularly out of position. Add to that a high line, and you've a disaster in your hands.
Worse still, we still couldn't conjure up a consistent attacking force.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/IEunn9Vy7f4HiKBPW4K43tE7WIPabyBQhuXGWaaf.png

Somehow we find ourselves still hanging in at the top half, but we've lost significant ground on the top 6/7.
I need to fix this 3-5-2 nonsense pronto (or stick with the 4-2-3-1) or we wont'e get European football next season.

Barring a miracle of course - the Europa League miracle; let's see how we got on there:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/mBgVR5ORySi6sdCyikkMV1pwnmws9jmk5enxKs8z.png

As we've discovered in our spars in the group stage, Groningen love to beat our offside trap, and it was no different here - Stankovic opened for them in the 1stminute, while Al-Shiri gave Szeman a world of problems and eventually got his goal as well.
I have to say we were very lucky here - Dincel suffered an injury and Alava was called upon, to surprisingly great effect.
The opposite could be said for Nikolaou though, he was very much off-colour despite scoring a late equaliser.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/GJvj3j7kv5In6T8RmBeNfcIuu4l5Bs7Pc28A4TKj.png

A cleaner performance back home, as we managed to ensure they didn't pull their usual tricks.
That said a 3-1 flattered us, having to rely on an OG and a wildly mishit cross from Diallo to give us the comfortable advantage.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/cNUKKJF9ynQsqyozAWTHxrItNWSnAa1n7dgfU6iO.png

Sassuolo actually won the whole thing 2 seasons ago, so needless to say this is gonna be a hell of a test for us.
'Fun' fact, they've also got ex-Oviedo loanee RB Romero in their ranks.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/C2eKw1MH0FfRpEM68x1F9e283FJgYZWJIz472wp2.png

Tbf when it's the quarters there aren't any easy teams left, chumps don't luck their way into the quarter finals of any competition.
I will say this though, having this (and potentially the semifinal) 2nd leg at home is not half bad a draw.

Lastly, we've got news on the youth front:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/eEgFujda0TPH4lLoDqQiVWgUdu4sjobTGsiqJynX.pnghttps://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/ZWlJuv7M1EOj9AhYOYK60exsMmHCcmdFktHiW3Mb.png

Hmm, a very, very fruitful 1st batch of youth graduates under a new HoYD and U19s gaffer.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/L0B0Gv1pX7zH0BJsOggVmPpBwHyOStkmJ7oA4ijb.png

Hottest prospect, but he's very, very raw.
Injury prone too, add that to a bag of pace and I'm looking at torn hamstrings ever other game.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/2LG8eSidmjk5qo3aZ3SBtWwEtyEiG2u8LPOSizoO.png

Could do with a brute in midfield now and again, serviceable.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/UXMM4kNxX03dYeBcQn4caoUFYpCYg2FMZ00bsTBy.png

Most interested in Cagigas tbh, he scored an absolute banger in the Candidates' friendly with the U19s.
Needs work with his composure though, but when he does come through he could well command a starting spot.

The 3-5-2 was given yet another go, and again it didn't turn out so well.
Cristobal eventually got us the win, but our attack was so disjointed throughout, it wasn't a pretty sight.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/PhRvlmw45CRpTuGKxGTX33JUXZzjnvJaQMCjYb9T.pnghttps://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/UyiyIcDDJNFKnWD8be1uODTD9eAH2AQns5hff1mN.png

Different games, same shit.
For the life of me I can't seem to be able to get my 3-5-2 right, in both games the back 3 was dissected far too easily, and while that's a hugr problem in itself, my CBs (will with at least 14 acceleration) should have the legs to recover, in addition to a GK who (in theory) has little qualms about rushing off his line.
tl;dr Doesn't matter still lost.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/T7dp2GEoV1cJCyHxTZFxxIcBbjAxyAoHQjtQpQTQ.png

Gave up, and reverted to the 4-2-3-1 - we're definitely still licking our wounds after such a bleak run of form, but hey, at least we didn't lose.
Even if it was against a relegation-threatened club.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/oWlM844LJBol0yBf68T63RMLj0JNS7dd3XHReODB.png

Finally a bit of light at the end of this tunnel - our attacks finally had something of a fluency to them, even if our defending still left a lot to be desired.
Allen Bell's had some shockers the past couple of months, maybe the interest from Marseille and Udinese is starting to get to him - still, not the best way to attract potential future employees.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/H7u0xUxdcDv794TWVWFd4t6neQQKQ2A1bP7fEr9G.png

So after the dumpster fire that was the past 5 months we find ourselves 9 points adrift of 6th, and with Betis in the Copa del Rey final 7th place is no longer a EL spot.
Also, a moment for Atletico, who were crowned champions with 6 games to spare - they've really made La Liga their bitch this season, though both Barca and Real starting uncharacteristically badly surely helped their cause immeasurably.

That's no European football for us next season then, unless we managed a miracle against Sassuolo:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/8FhnUbpBqEMYiSGVLhIsIzYi2hDvJRgroxhBRkyu.png

LB for the day Artur Silva was roasted for pace by Cisotti throughout the match, and it was from there that the latter got the only goal - Silva reacted too late, and there wasn't any catching up from there.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/3R7lBOqggaOibHtMskvJB5UZLEcHeMuK8Fk8ytQb.png

I have to say, we gave it our all to the bloody end - just a massive shame we couldn't hold firm defensively here.

And with that we're finally out of Europe for the next year at least, and I'll have to do some squad restructuring for the near future.

Before I end I'll also need to highlight something that I'd missed out last month:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/eCcznJs4Ftu0dQpgE46kE0RpchxfJmNXVvU0Pzg5.png

It turns out that Drogheda has no coaching staff on its books at all, so I've decided to activate the Irish leagues so that I can get that British scouting knowledge.

WOW we actually beat Valencia! We couldn't beat them in what seemed to be years and we suddenly give them a trouncing?
Oh wait it comes as we're virtually ruled out of a European spot, but crucially not mathematically - it's one of them false hope things innit.
In all seriousness, I've scarcely had an assman's pre-match prep so spot on - working on attacking set-pieces led to 3 headers, Nikolaou's from a cross while Bell's and Szemans were from corners.

And a point away to the runaway champions! Though it has to be said we weren't really deserving of a win, they had more clear-cut chances and we were only level through an own goal.
That said, Atleti tried their best to keep us that way, with both our key attackers picking up injuries - both would be ruled out for the nest of the season, NIkolaoucoming off much worse with a torn hamstring.

Well that's the end of a brave run, Otal with an opener on the break gave us hope, but Barca were better on the whole and eventually found a way to a comeback win.
The loss also confirmed our missing out next year's Europa League - time for some squad restructuring then.

Oh Carettini you Italian bastard.
Anyway, for the season's closer we started with a rotated XI (partly by circumstance - I didn't have my 2 best attackers remember) and Estaban took his starting chance with a double.
But Carettini was able to do what he did, and we had to leave it to Cagigas - having only graduated from the academy remember - to come off the bench and have a debut that dreams are made of.
Still, defensively it was about as bad as it got, especially to end a season.

Yep, Atleti obliterated the league and did come through unbeaten, admittedly magnificent work from them.
As for us... I'm just glad we finished in the top half, there were times in the middle of the campaign where I thought we were headed to a John Carver-esque run to the second tier.
