Information about this file:
Data is up-to-date as of 05/03/2017.

Over 32,500 individual data edits including but not restricted to:

• Over 500 persons edited to update everything from abilities to reputation, from personal information (date of birth, hair colour etc) to contract status, from player position to transfer and history information, and much more;

• Just over 1,000 new persons added so that ALL clubs have a full squad complement, including youth team players and backroom staff where known;

• All 67 clubs massively overhauled to update everything from reputation to youth stadiums, club histories to player and goalkeeper kit colours for all clubs, and also affiliate clubs;

• All 67 clubs containing this season’s REAL players and backroom staff for maximum accuracy

• Realistic competitions, including the real-life set-up and rules for all 4 senior Maltese divisions, the 2 Gozitan divisions and Sections A to E of the Youth FA competitions, as well as a Gozitan youth league;

• National characteristics so that wages and transfer values are as close to real-life values as possible and also to regulate future transfer movement from foreign countries and regions in a realistic manner;

• 20+ Awards added to mimic real-life awards, some of which can be voted for by the user;

• 100+ Derbies added to mimic real-life rivalries;

• 10 Stadiums added and assigned to clubs in order to correctly represent as closely as possible the real-life situation, within the limits of the editor;

• 10 Media Sources (Radio & TV stations, websites and TV programmes) added to attempt to present realistic media coverage;

As can be clearly seen, this was a massive undertaking and lots of time went into the research and preparation for this file. We’d like to thank all the persons who provided us with assistance and information with regards to data gathering. BurnCM4X from the official FM forum created the league format and other related issues, while drinu and mons collected and added all the remaining edits. If you notice any glaring mistakes, feel free to contact us so that the data may be corrected in future releases

Hi mons, thank you for your hard work.

Unfortunately, I have an issue with that file and I don't have any clue why. When selecting the editor data for setting up the game I get an error telling that there need to be ten teams selected for section A, but there are only 2. Any guess what happened?

Thank you!

Thank you!

I suspect it's a clash with one or more other editor data files. I've tried running the file on its own and in conjunction with a number and variety of other editor data files, and I haven't had any issues whatever tbh.

Very interested to try this. I couldn't get really accustomed to Maltese football when I was there last year, but I always wanted to train either a Maltese club or the national team in FM. Thanks to everyone involved for the work you put in.

Joseph Zerafa at Birkirkara should be left-footed, he's doing my head in cutting on to his right-foot ha. Doesn't deter the fact this is an amazing patch, mind

Surprised it's taken me as long to realise this - Ta' Qali is located in Mdina? Should be Ta' Qali, or, at the very least, Attard. Even more confusing, Centenary Stadium is in Rabat - they're literally yards apart but apparently in different places, ha.

Another thing I've spotted is away followings. Birkirkara just played Balzan at Ta' Qali in the league on my game. Balzan's away following was 2 (yes, two). Can this be rectified (not sure how away followings are generated) on the option file? Mind you, it seems Balzan (who have quite a decent core following what with their recent success) must have poor support setting full stop, as their "home" game against Mosta had an attendance of 194, with Mosta having 138 "away" supporters...

The stadium thingy is a bit tricky tbh. I seem to recall that the stadium was set in Rabat up to at least a couple of versions back, not sure how it's set to Mdina now so I'll look to rectify that. There is a bit of confusion with regards to the exact location. The stadium may be located in Ta' Qali, but it's really only an area name and not a village as such. Going by the the official MFA site and each stadium's postcode, the Centenary Stadium is indeed set in Rabat while Ta' Qali is in Attard. I know they're literally opposite each other, but my guess is that the local council border straddles the street between them so that, technically speaking, they are in separate locations. If you look at that site, the technical centre and the Millennium Stand, which are literally part of the same building, are in different postcodes!

As for away supporters, it's quite complex to transfer the real-life Maltese supporter situation. We don't do "real" home and away fixtures, as hardly any club owns their own stadium, and so the team on the left is only nominally at home. Therefore it's not really possible to speak of an away following in terms of Maltese supporters. Because no clubs play their "home" fixtures at their own stadium, what happens is that generally 2 games are played back-to-back in either Ta' Qali or Hibs Stadium or Victor Tedesco, with the final total attendance given being for the 2 games. Additionally, it's not unknown for 2 top tier games to have a total attendance of 300-400 people, especially if they're games without any interest. Balzan may be flying high irl but they don't really have a large supporter base. In fact when Balzan played Mosta only last month, the total attendance was 220. Not too far off from my research, is it?

I wasn't arguing with the reserach, in fact, the depths gone into it has actually made it far more accurate! Ta' Qali I'd class as a mini suburb rather than a village, so I'd go with that but certainly not Mdina. I reckon you'd struggle to get the stadium inside Mdina's walls All I will say is re: the postcodes listed though is that some don't make sense, sometimes. I used to live in Mellieha and up until about ten years ago, I had an SPB postcode before MLH was introduced. Some parts of Mellieha still have a SPB postcode. So the RBT and ATD postcodes could just be the way the Post Office allocated postcodes. The maps I've attached might clear some of it up, though.

As for the support, fully understand as regards attendances with sharing the stadiums and official attendances. But I've been at Balzan games in the last couple of years, they usually have a good 100-120 or so (they had about 300 at the Europa League game I went to) and, seeing as home/away doesn't really come into play, I was thinking it maybe something hardcoded into the game, rather than the option file itself.

To be pedantic, I wouldn't really class Ta' Qali as a suburb either. For someplace to be considered a suburb, there have to be people actually living there I think we both agree it's not in Mdina though! I'm really not sure why it's set as such in the database as I distinctly remember setting it in Attard not too long ago. It's best to set both stadiums in Attard, I guess, and I'll do that for the next version

Wrt to the Balzan issue, you can't really compare an Europa League game with a low-grade Premier League fixture tbf. I'll look to slightly increase Balzan's supporter allocation, but I don't think a difference of 34 people between the FM attendance for Balzan-Mosta (194) and the real-life equivalent (220) is all that much.

Interested to see what Balzan's attendance for their European home fixtures was in your save for the sake of comparison. The attendance irl, according to the match report by the national broadcaster was 357.

I'm not for arguing in the slightest, it's not even just Balzan, it was an example but just found an away following of 2 bizarre. Like I say, think it's more the hard code of the game with that.

Mere fact this fact is even available is amazing to me, having spent so much of my life in Malta and following the local game. Was just me feeding my curiosity more than anything

Oh absolutely, an away following of 2 is not really very realistic But as you say, the way the game is coded doesn't really cater for the Maltese kind of situation.

Would really appreciate if you could look back in your save when you have the time and let me know Balzan's home European attendance, for the sake of comparison

No worries. They seem about right, to be honest. And, bizarrely, the away following seems OK in their most recent game against Floriana...

For the sake of this file, I think it's best to ignore any away attendance and focus more on the total attendance tbh.

Presume a new one will be out for 2018's games?

Quick one I've noticed recently is shirt names. It's an old save, granted as Siraj and Samir were still as Balzan together but their shirt names should just be their first names. Samir still had just Samir in the recent Europa League games, too. Bizarrely, the same goes for Sean Cipriott?!

Is it possible to have squad numbers available for the Maltese league? Kaljevic and Cipriott above being fine examples but then you have Jurgen Borg, who wears 94 at Gżira, Romeu Romão wears 90 at Valletta to name just a couple...

FM18 was announced a couple of hours ago - give me a break Kidding apart, time permitting, I will be doing this file again. Official data research is well underway and I already have listed all the other changes for inclusion in this file

Shirt names are a tricky one. Some clubs have them, some clubs don't, but FM assumes everyone does. Tbh, I don't have the time to go to the level of checking team photos in action just in case a team's players have a different way of shirt naming rather than the traditional surname on top of the shirt number. Now that Cipriott has moved away irl from Balzan, it remains to be seen what he'll have on the back of his shirt.

Irl, fixed squad numbers are not a feature of Maltese football. I have worn different shirt numbers during the same season for my club, for example. But in the interest of having an extra fun feature in the file, I will be adding the ability to assign squad numbers to the FM18 version of this file Just don't expect me to assign every player their squad number as well - it's a database with 2,000 players, I'd need to be working full-time on it to be able to do so

Haha, indeed, just questioning. I used to be admin for Universal Music's community, so fully understand the life/work to online stuff is annoying/demanding and people mithering - like me above - can get tedious. I did try to add stuff like shirt names and the like, as well as changing some media in England but my additions clashed with the Maltese league and the database wouldn't load. It's not the end of the world but just something I clocked the other day. Cheers for the reply, your work on the file is hugely appreciated!

Oh no, don't get me wrong. People getting in touch on one's file is gratifying, means at least somebody is using them at least Much as I'd like to, however, I tend not to get involved in the fine details of the file like player attributes etc. for the simple reason that it'd never ever get released hehe.

Drop me a PM and I can send you a separate English media file (albeit somewhat old now tbf) which I cannot include publicly on the real name fix file since permission was withheld. A tip: if/when you create a media file, I would suggest that you create a new file to do so, rather than add the changes to an existing one. This would allow you to identify possible issues, and perhaps even correct them, which is much more difficult when using separate files
