Arsene Wenger feels Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson should have been punished for his touchline rant during their win over Newcastle but admitted he has not always acted properly himself.

Referee Mike Dean made no mention of Ferguson's angry outburst towards match officials during his side's 4-3 home win over Newcastle on Boxing Day.

Wenger himself was sent to the stands by Dean for kicking a water bottle during Arsenal's 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford in August 2009 but the official was more lenient towards Ferguson.

When asked if the Scotsman should have received some form of punishment, Wenger said: "If he didn't behave like he should have done, then yes.

"He will be the first to say that. We sometimes go overboard on the touchline and when you do that, you have to be punished.

"Whether it's me or Fergie or anyone else in the world, the rules are the rules. It is not rules for one person and rules for another. It's the same for everybody.

"We love the Premier League. It is watched all over the world so we want it to be respected by fans for its behaviours.

"Should you behave like that - no. I did not always behave as I should and you can call that a bad example, yes. So when you go overboard, you have to be punished.

"The message it sends out when you look at the pictures is just not to behave like that."

Wenger was also asked if referees and the FA are afraid of Ferguson but he seemed unconvinced.

"Why should anyone be scared of anybody? You have the rules. You observe the rules, or not the rules. Why should anybody be scared of Ferguson, I don't understand that?

"There are rules and the referees act on that. They are professional people, they are paid for that. It's as simple as that.

"On the day they made a mistake. It does not mean they are not honest but they made a mistake."

Fergie said this about Benitez in 2009: "Everton are a big club, not a small one which Benitez arrogantly said."

And?

So it's wrong that Benitez said it, but it's all right if he says it?

Your argument would be better if it was a Benitez quote, rather than Fergie speaking up against these kind of comments, since he's quilty of it as well.

I'm saying Fergie is in the wrong. Read a few posts before I said it was stupid of him to say it.

Fucking hell. Read before you accuse me of shit.

No problem.

To be fair I wasn't very clear, I just quoted Fergie without any comment after it.

I think he's still annoyed that the four points we nabbed off his bunch cost them the title last year.

We were eight points clear after we'd played Newcastle twice, there were a few games we fucked up to lose the title but they weren't it.

This is one of those examples where stats dont particularly tell the whole story tbh

EDIT: I mean with regards to Messi/Ibra/Ronaldo more than anything, or anyone from other countries for that matter

Such shite arguments on here these days. The offside one was the worst, I think 'Ninja' repeated the same incorrect point about 16 times.

That's probably because he's comfortably the best player on the planet though.

I think people just need to accept there are some grey areas in the laws of the game - handballs in the box, for example. We can all put forward our cases but in some instances I don't think there is a definitive answer as to whether the referee has made the right call or not.

Surely it would all come down to the interpretation from the referee.

If he feels a player has gained an advantage from being in an offside position or is interfering with play then he'll blow up, if he doesn't then he won't, simple as that I'd assume.

I don't care enough to have read through this thread and/ or looked into the official rules of the game, but I'd have imagined that the case is very much six of one, half a dozen of the other. I don't think there is a definitive answer, although my personal opinion would be that despite being in an offside position the attacker wasn't interfering with play.
