East Bengal - End Of Season Round Up - May 2026
A second season in charge of East Bengal has come and gone and we're now trying to be successful as we were last season, but maybe slightly more this year, the Federation Cup is our main aim, as that would see us wrap up India, winning every trophy possible there. We've already started the season on a successful note, snapping up the Durrand Cup and the Asian Confederation Cup more importantly for a second year running. Now we turn to the Super Cup, League and Federation Cup.
Back to back super cup wins, we had to work for this one though! Mohun Bagan put up a great fight, and led the game after forty minutes. It looked like the were set to beat us until Opara popped up with five minutes left on the clock to fire us level. There wasn't time to find a winner and we went to a shootout. It was us who came out on top though as we won four three after five penalties each.
We weren't quite able to go for a second unbeaten season on the bounce. Two defeats during the season and also a draw on the final day stopped us matching our league points tally from last year. But we've had another great season in the league. It was all about whether we could retain our league title now. The defeat to Mohun Bagan was massive, I'm not sure what went on but losing out six nil just wasn't on the agenda, the players even coughed up for the traveling fans tickets.
League Champions for a second season running, this turned out to be another stroll for us this year. Although, Mohun Bagan did run is close to the title, eventually finishing four points off our tally. They had a superb season, scoring the most goals (61) and finishing with the best defence as well (18) meaning they conceded less goals than games they played. They finished thirteen points above third place Chennai City. But its us who are celebrating once again.
We fall short once again in the Federation Cup, exactly the same round as last time. The Quarter Finals saw us face Real Kashmir which saw us dominate both legs. Away from home we won four two whilst we returned home and absolutely smashed them, another five one win gave us a steady nine three victory on aggregate. The Semi Final drew us against Mohun Bagan, the toughest tie we could face. We beat them two one at home, but away we were well beaten, losing out five three and crashing out the competition again.
Following winning the league last season, we went straight into the Asian Champions League this year and made our way to the group stage rather comfortably, beating Altyn Asyr three nil following been drawn at home in the first qualifying round and then faced Lokomotiv Toshkent and beat them five nil, again at home. The group stage drew us with Al-Ahli who we picked up one point from the two games, Al-Duhali who we bagged four points from and Paxtakor who we grabbed three points from. Unfortunately we didn't do enough to qualify though, finishing third in the group.
And so, on the 17th May 2026 my notice is in and my reign at East Bengal comes to an end. Its been a very good two years in charge scooping a number of trophies and this can only be good for my rep, but for now, the time comes to find a new job.
