I bought a Fender Baja Tele earlier in the summer. I'm still pretty much a beginner too but I've been getting better. Need to start playing a bit more regularly, haven't quite put the time in the last couple of weeks.

The left one I think is the most expensive thing I own and is awesome. The right one is an electro-acoustic I bought on ebay. It's ok. The strings on basses like that are kind of a pain though. Also, I have an anime poster. That's just how I roll. And my room is orange.
The only thing I'd say is if you actually want to like practice properly and get good at play guitar, I'd get an acoustic. They're generally cheaper, they don't require an amp or stuff like that and unless you're in an actual band, you're more likely to impress people by playing a song acoustically than electrically. Don't know why, that's just how it works.

TS, Have a look on ebay for Epiphone's - They are a child company of Gibson and do some very high quality guitars for reasonable price, Loads of top musicians use them such as Noel Gallacher and Zakk Wylde.
I got a Epiphone Les Paul off of ebay for £130 which was a great guitar that sounds as good as my Fender or Gretsch models.

Yeah. I got it for free and put it up when I got it. A friend of mine worked at HMV and gave it to me because they knew I liked the comic. I have a bunch of posters like that. I wouldn't buy them now and I could take them down, but they all remind me of my past. The Watchmen poster reminds me of college. The friend who got me it obviously, the girl I went to see it with and, by extension, some of the other people from back then I don't see anymore.
Not that any of this is relevant to guitars, but you asked.

I'd love to splash out £300+ on a real nice guitar but unfortunately being a student means even spending £150 is a bit of a push. I figure that if I bought a semi-decent one within my price range I'd spend some time improving my ability and then if I'm more well-off down the line I'd splash out on something nice.

Thanks buddy. Will have a look at some of the Epiphones on eBay.

Thanks, but my acoustic is in pretty good nick.

I have a guitar too (which I also want to learn but I really can't be bothered), but I was given it for free, and it only has two strings. I guess I could model myself around Seasick Steve...
