I'm thinking of buying a new guitar and could do with some advice with which one to get. I've been playing for a few years but have never really put enough time into practising to become any good at it, so I'd probably still class myself as a beginner. Looking to spend somewhere between £100-150, but not sure which ones to look for. I like the look of a Les Paul but still undecided.

If you're serious about playing you'd be better off getting something a little bit more expensive - it'd be better quality, last longer and would benefit you further down the line. But I'd recommend a Squier Strat at those prices, don't think you'd be able to get a good Les Paul replica for that. Plus I prefer Fender necks, they're not quite as thick and narrow as the Gibson ones.

I bought a Fender Baja Tele earlier in the summer. I'm still pretty much a beginner too but I've been getting better. Need to start playing a bit more regularly, haven't quite put the time in the last couple of weeks.

Guitars are gay. Here are two of my basses. I have one other one, but it's shit and broken.

The left one I think is the most expensive thing I own and is awesome. The right one is an electro-acoustic I bought on ebay. It's ok. The strings on basses like that are kind of a pain though. Also, I have an anime poster. That's just how I roll. And my room is orange.

The only thing I'd say is if you actually want to like practice properly and get good at play guitar, I'd get an acoustic. They're generally cheaper, they don't require an amp or stuff like that and unless you're in an actual band, you're more likely to impress people by playing a song acoustically than electrically. Don't know why, that's just how it works.

You have a poster from the Watchmen movie hanging on your wall?..

Basses are for wannabe musicians.

TS, Have a look on ebay for Epiphone's - They are a child company of Gibson and do some very high quality guitars for reasonable price, Loads of top musicians use them such as Noel Gallacher and Zakk Wylde.
I got a Epiphone Les Paul off of ebay for £130 which was a great guitar that sounds as good as my Fender or Gretsch models.

Yeah. I got it for free and put it up when I got it. A friend of mine worked at HMV and gave it to me because they knew I liked the comic. I have a bunch of posters like that. I wouldn't buy them now and I could take them down, but they all remind me of my past. The Watchmen poster reminds me of college. The friend who got me it obviously, the girl I went to see it with and, by extension, some of the other people from back then I don't see anymore.

Not that any of this is relevant to guitars, but you asked.

I'd love to splash out £300+ on a real nice guitar but unfortunately being a student means even spending £150 is a bit of a push. I figure that if I bought a semi-decent one within my price range I'd spend some time improving my ability and then if I'm more well-off down the line I'd splash out on something nice.

I've got an epiphone EJ200 if you were gonna go for an acoustic. It's absolutely gorgeous.

Went with a black Epiphone Les Paul in the end, £130. Always liked the look of them and seeing as it got the Rick seal of approval I thought it was worth a punt.

Thanks, but my acoustic is in pretty good nick.

Bass guitar is where it's at. I have a Squire Jazz Bass and it's lovely. I'd love a proper Fender or something but I don't play it often enough for it to be worth the money. I want to play it more often but I never have the motivation to pick it up. I reckon I'd be quite good at it if I could find the time.

I have a guitar too (which I also want to learn but I really can't be bothered), but I was given it for free, and it only has two strings. I guess I could model myself around Seasick Steve...
