John Warrington: A Footballing Journey
April 2021
2nd April
It's youth intake day! Unfortunately, no one really stands out so I'll need to do some scouting.
A great result to end Gateshead's 7 game unbeaten home run. We dominated the game from start to finish.
3rd April
Adam Curry, Tom Heardman and Jack Bainbridge pen new deals at the club.
4th April
Denilson Carvalho signs a new deal with the club.
It was a bit annoying to concede but when you score five, who cares?
8th April
Following a scouting mission, we have confirmed two signings for the summer. Owen Conway from Boston for £875 and Charlie Bulmer from Chester for 1.2k
It wasn't our finest performance that's for sure but we did what we needed to do to get the three points in horrible conditions.
A disappointing draw but to be fair Blyth's equaliser was a stunner and their keeper was on fire. The draw isn't going to stop us from achieving promotion to the National League.
Despite Troy Brown seeing red in the first half, Brackley never really threatened and we eased to a 2-0 win.
Hereford gave us a tough game but we came alive in the second half to ease to a 3-1 win.
24th April
That win at Hereford confirms us as the CHAMPIONS of the National League North meaning we'll be playing in the National League next season!
30th April
Jake Kenyon signs a new one-year deal.

May 2021
After sealing the title I made 10 changes to the team. Things looked awful at 0-3 but the fringe players battled back superbly to eventually draw 3-3.
Another draw, this time against second-placed York. They got lucky, scoring their only shot on target.
A Wembley final, I never thought we'd get to the final I have to admit. With Barnet being in the league above, we knew we were in for a tough game but the lads have shown all season that they're a great unit and this game was no exception. They battled like gladiators and managed to defy the bookmakers and come away with a 2-0 win. A really proud moment for everyone at the club.
After the win in the FA Trophy final, I gave all 11 starters a rest for the game at Alfreton. Unfortunately, we lost but I'm not all that fussed tbh. A lot of the players on the pitch will be leaving in a month anyway.
The Spennymoor game saw the return of the main 11 and they didn't disappoint, winning by four goals to one.
An easy 2-0 win in a game where the home side didn't have a shot on target.
23rd May
I'm delighted to announce that goalkeeper Cameron Gregory has renewed his loan from Shrewsbury for next season.
A superb final day win against Chester means we break the 100 point barrier in the National League North. What an achievement.

July/August 2021
31st July
The bookies have us as fourth favourites for promotion to the football league, promising.
What a way to start the season! A dominant 4-0 win sends us to the top of the National League table.
31st July
Brad Burton ruled out for 4 weeks - 2 months with a twisted ankle
Another 4-0 win, this time away at Aldershot with Aaron Ramsey bagging a hat-trick. He's like a lower league....Aaron Ramsey xD
4th August
Striker Johnny McMurray signs on a free transfer.
It wasn't quite as convincing as the first two games but two first-half goals meant we beat Solihull by two goals to one to take home all three points.
It took us a penalty but we finally managed to break the deadlock to beat Dover by a single goal to keep up our winning run. Happy with that result.
16th August
Adam Curry joins Plymouth for a fee of 20.5k.
Not our finest outing but the lads showed tremendous heart to bounce back from 1-3 down to get a draw.
I feared the worst when we went 2-0 down early on but once again we battled back well to claim a draw. This group of players just doesn't give up and it's so pleasing to see.
Another draw but given Notts County are top and were massive favourites, I'll happily take it.

September 2021
3rd September
Defender Ash Taylor signs on a free transfer.
A very good performance and back to winning ways with a 3-0 win over Guiseley.
7th September
Striker Mark Cullen signs on a free transfer.
Another fine 3-0 win and it was great to see Mark Cullen get a goal on his debut.
We were poor in the first half but after some words, we came out a lot better in the second and managed to record a pleasing 2-0 win to stay top of the National League table.
This hurts. We battered them and they scored with their only shot on target. I guess it's what we get for not taking our chances.
Wow. We were awful for 75 minutes then played like Brazil for the last 15. Bizarre but I'll happily take the three points.

October 2021
A superb comeback to win by three goals to one at Barnet. A pleasing result.
3rd October
Tom Clayton signs for Queen of the South for a fee of 29.5k. He started kicking off because he hadn't played in the first 6 games and handed in a transer request so it is what it is. Can't complain with a bit of profit.
4th October
Southport to host Nuneaton in the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round.
5th October
Fantastic news as the board offer me a new deal which I've gladly accepted.
Get In! It was a rubbish game before Tom Heardman came off the bench to steal us all three points. We'll definitely play better and lose in the future. It was great to see young Charlie Bulmer score his first goal too, that kid has a bright future believe me.
Thank god. When Altricham pulled a goal back I thought we were in for a nervy last 15 minutes but a hat-trick from sub Tom Heardman saw us to a comfortable three points in the end.
11th October
Goalkeeper Jake Turner signs on a free transfer. With the money from the Tom Clayton deal, this signing was a no brainer. Turner is miles better than both our current goalkeepers.
We made hard work of that! I can't believe it took us until the 95th minute to score. At least we're through.
18th October
Southport to travel to Oldham in the FA Cup 1st Round.
Another win, this time against Dulwich Hamlet. The scoreline suggests the game was tight but it wasn't, we dominated including hitting the woodwork three times.
That was complete and utter *****. A totally unacceptable performance.
26th October
Jake Kenyon ruled out for 5-6 weeks with a twisted ankle.
29th October
Jack Bainbridge signs for York for a fee of 6.75k.
I don't know what to say. We dominated for 85 minutes then forgot how to defend for the last 5. Fuming.

November 2021
Get the **** in! After the shambles that was the last two games, I switched us to a 4231 for the Oldham game in the cup and it worked as we came away with an unexpected 2-1 win.
8th November
Southport to travel to Sunderland or Salford in the FA Cup 2nd Round.
A solid win really, that's all that needs to be said.
17th November
After completing my Continental A license, the board has allowed me to take a course to gain my Continental Pro License.
22nd November
Southport to travel to Altrincham in the FA Trophy Third Round.
A disappointing loss but we only have ourselves to blame after missing so many chances. Frustrating.
What an earth have I just witnessed? We destroyed League One Salford in their own back yard to book our place in round three. I still can't quite believe it.
29th November
Southport to host Premier League side Bournemouth in the FA Cup Third Round.
I don't understand us at the moment. How can we go from putting six past a League One side to not being able to beat bottom of the table. It boggles the mind.

December 2021
Good to get back to winning ways in the league, especially scoring 3.
This could be a huge result when it comes down to the end of the season. A really pleasing win against top of the league Bradford meaning we're only a point behind now.
I made a whole host of changes for our FA Trophy game as the league is my priority but I was pleasantly surprised to see us progress into the next round.
13th December
Southport to travel to Dag & Red in the FA Trophy 4th Round.
A really good dominant performance to win all three points. Happy days.
A 2-0 win, back to the top of the table, job done.
Another pleasing 2-0 win. We seem to be back to our old selves now.
A bit disappointing to concede two but the three points are the main thing.

1st January
Johnny McMurray signs for Linfield for 16.25k. For a guy who hasn't played, I just couldn't turn this down.
Absolutely incredible from the lads. We've taken a Premier League side to a replay. That's just unbelievable.
I wouldn't say we were that good against Torquay but we were clinical and that got us the three points. Great to see.
5th January
Midfielder Ryan East joins on loan from Crewe.
I once again rotated the team for the FA Trophy but the lads managed to go through winning 3-2 after being 2-0 down. A superb effort.
10th January
Laurence Maguire joins Exeter for a fee of 17k.
Basiru Mbye joins Cheltenham for a fee of 7k.
Southport to host Braintree in the FA Trophy 5th Round.
Yes, we did actually take the lead at Bournemouth! Incredible. We then did proceed to get the pasting that was expected but the lads did themselves proud.
15th January
Full-back Ryan McLaughlin signs on a free transfer.
18th January
Lamin Jagne signs for York for a fee of 12k.
21st January
Midfielder Jacob Mellis joins on a free transfer.
A great performance and a comfortable 3-0 win. Very happy with that.
29th January
This is our third home game in a row that has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Worrying.

Once again I played a changed side in the FA Trophy. It looked like we had the game won but Braintree were able to scramble an equaliser late on.
7th February
Southport or Braintree to travel to Weymouth in the FA Trophy Quarter Final
Another draw in the FA Trophy but we were able to go through 4-2 on penalties.
To be honest, the scoreline makes the game seem closer than it was. We battered Stockport and should have won by more.
A really good win at home against Leyton Orient. We never looked like losing to be honest.
We were absolutely clinging on at the end thanks to Troy Brown's red card so I'm delighted that we managed to pick up all three points. We're starting to open up a bit of a gap at the top now.
Mark Cullen is a machine! He scored a hat-trick as we smashed Guiseley by six goals to nil.
Seven changes for this one but it didn't matter as we eased to a 3-0 win and a semi-final place.

March 2022
With Yeovil being 3rd, this was a tough trip so I'm reasonably happy to come away with a draw. I definitely feel we could have won it though.
An easy 2-0 win to put us 12 points clear with two games in hand. Surely the football league is around the corner.
A bit disappointing to concede at the end but the three points are the main thing, especially with Bradford not playing.
With the fixtures piling up we are starting to need to rest players so I'm actually rather pleased to draw away at Chesterfield, especially given top scorer Mark Cullen wasn't playing.
9 changes for the FA Trophy, including young Owen Conway getting his debut. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the win as we drew 0-0 with Bath City at Haig Avenue.
My word we were poor in the first half! Luckily we improved in the second half and won 5-2 to go 16 points clear of Bradford.
We once again played a rotated side in the FA Trophy but the lads did superbly, winning by three goals to nil to put us into the final for the second year in a row where we'll play Bradford.
Not happy with this one to be honest. Barnet stole a point after being dominated all game. That said, we are 14 points clear with just seven games to go so every point puts us closer to the football league.

Argh so frustrating. Dorking scored a worldie in the 1st minute of the game then sat behind the ball for 90 minutes. At least we managed to get a draw out of it.
3rd April
Another underwhelming youth intake but it's going to be that way until we can improve our facilities and recruitment policy.
5th April
Jake Turner and Mark Cullen sign new deals at the club.
YESSSSS! A 3-1 win means we are CHAMPIONS OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE and will be playing in the football league next season.
More great news! As a result of us being promoted to the football league, we'll be turning professional at the end of the season!
7th April
Aaron Ramsey agrees to extend his loan contract for the duration of next season, thanks Villa!
Arguably the hardest game of the season and we went and won it. Can't argue with that!
10th April
Chris Conn-Clarke and Nathan Dale agree contract extensions at the club.
12th April
Striker Tai Sodje agrees to join us on a free transfer at the end of his Man City contract in the summer.
Another game, another win. That win also puts us over 100 points, what an achievement.
Not going to lie, seeing us carry on winning after winning the title is really pleasing. It shows just how ruthless this squad of players is.
I gave a fair few players a rest for this one and it showed, unfortunately.
A good way to end the league season, we battered Maidenhead. Just the FA Trophy final left now.
Get in! A second successive FA Trophy win! A tremendous effort by everyone, especially the fringe players that carried us through the competition.

July/August 2022
27th July
The bookies have us as favourites for promotion to League One!? That's surprising.
Southport win 5-4 on penalties.
We were massive underdogs going into this game so I wasn't really expecting much. To take Mansfield to penalties is a fantastic achievement in itself so I'm made up we won the penalty shootout.
29th July
Southport to play Walsall away in the EFL Cup 2nd Round.
What a way to start the season! A superb 3-0 win away from home. Hopefully a sign of things to come.
31st July
Ryan McLaughlin signs for Linfield for a fee of 51k.
2nd August
Southport to play Shrewsbury, Sunderland and Liverpool U23's in Group B in the Papa John's Trophy.
It was a tough one but we managed to scrape a 1-0 over Accrington a Haig Avenue.
11th August
Defender Leigh Kavanagh signs on loan from Brighton.
We were poor I'm not going to lie but I'm not too bothered about the EFL cup so I don't really mind.
My word, that was a rollercoaster. I thought we'd blown it when Northampton equalised but Charlie Bulmer popped up to win the game for us in the 90th minute. Get in!
Stats wise this was a close game but we were clinical and that was the difference. Great to see.
Another fantastic result and another clean sheet to boot, hopefully, we can keep this up.
We were unlucky in the first game of the EFL Trophy. The two sides matched each other but unfortunately, Liverpool U23's managed to get the win.

September/October 2022
The result was never really in doubt. We played really well and deserved the victory.
An excellent result though I was disappointed that we conceded twice.
We were clinging on by or fingernails towards the end but we managed to get the job done and secure all three points.
I'm not sure what happened in the second half, we went to pieces which is so unlike us. A big response needed next time out.
A great response to the loss at Colchester, especially after going behind in the first half.
A rat result that keeps us in the competition with one group game left.
It wasn't plain sailing but we managed to get the job done in the end.
9th October
Sheffield Wednesday offered me an interview bt I turned it down. We're building something here at Southport and I'm keen to see how far we can take it before the stature of the club means we hit the ceiling.
For a while, I thought it wasn't going to be our day so it was a relief when we finally broke the deadlock then went on to secure the points.
17th October
Southport to host Rochdale in the FA Cup 1st Round
An easy win, job done.
Another good win away from home, Stevenage couldn't really get near us.
Disappinting. There's no way Cheltenham deserved a point from this one. They scored from one of their two shots to punish us for missed chances. That said, we still have a healthy lead at the top of League Two regardless.
An easy win which was all but secure after half an hour. I'm just a little disappointed that we didn't score more!
29th October
Jerry Yates ruled out for 4-5 weeks with a twisted ankle

November 2022
The good form continues with a superb performance away at Carlisle, even if we did get a bit sloppy in the final 15 minutes. The one downside was losing both our centre-backs to suspensions.
Given that Rochdale are the league above, I'm delighted with the manner of which we dispatched them in the FA Cup. A really pleasing performance and it shows exactly what we are capable of.
7th November
Southport to travel to Shrewsbury in the FA Cup Second Round
With 5 players on international duty and a few more needing a rest, I had to rotate the team massively. Unfortunately, this meant that we were no match for Sunderland and meant we finished third in our EFL Trophy group, going out of the competition.
12th September
The game away at Tranmere is postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
16th November
Fantastic news as the board agrees to improve our youth facilities and our youth recruitment.
We dominated against Sutton and never looked like dropping points.
This was very similar to the way the Sutton game went, we were superb. We're really on top form at the moment which is so good to see.
Get in! A fantastic result to turn the tie around after going 2-1 down. I'm really proud of the way the lads played. Bring on the big boys in round three.
28th November
Southport to travel to Altrincham in Round 3 of the FA Cup.
I'm not going to lie, the way I left Tranmere before taking the Southport job gave this game a lot more meaning to me so you can imagine my delight when we beat them with a goal in stoppage time. Beautiful.

December 2022
A solid 2-0 win at home against Yeovil to start the month.
A disappointing draw but with Plymouth drawing and Crawley losing, we are still 15 points clear at the top of the table.
Gutted. This was our chance to go even clear at the top but a late equaliser from Plymouth means the gap remains at 15 points.
16th December
Sam McClelland ruled out for 6-7 weeks with a thigh strain.
Tyree Wilson ruled out for 7-8 weeks with sprained knee ligaments.
Really happy with our performance as we returned to winning ways, we didn't give Scunthorpe a chance.
23rd December
Charlie Bulmer ruled out for 2-4 weeks with a pulled abdominal muscle.
Livid. We were rubbish.
I made 10 changes for our FA Cup tie with Altrincham to try and give some players a rest. The fringe players did the job and safely put us through into round 4.

January 2023
2nd January
Southport to travel to Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup 4th Round.
3rd January
Our match vs Crawley has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch
We were poor in the first half so scoring after 15 seconds in the second was exactly what we needed. From there we breezed to victory, despite Ryan Burke's late red card.
Another red card which is slightly worrying but thankfully we managed to scrape to a 1-0 win at Accrington to go 14 points clear.
14th January
Owen Conway joins Cardiff on a free transfer.
I'm not sure whether to be angry or just disappointed. Losing to a penalty in the 98th minute is just cruel so I think I should be easy on the lads.
17th January
Our game against Port Vale has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
YESSSSSSSSSS! What a result! It looked like we were out of the FA Cup but Jerry Yates equalised in the 94th minute and we then went onto win it in extra time with two minutes to go. FANTASTIC!
23rd January
Southport to travel to Coventry in the FA Cup 5th Round. How do we keep avoiding all the big teams!?
Delighted to get back to winning ways in the league, even if we did leave it late.
24th January
Gutted. Absolutely ******* gutted. Our best player Charlie Bulmer has left to join Aston Villa for a fee of 210k. There was absolutely nothing I could do as he had a release clause in his contract.
A great way to bounce back from the setback of losing Blmer. What a result and shout ut to Jerry Yates for scoring four!
28th January
George Nunn ruled out for 4 weeks with a groin strain.
31st January
Tai Sodje joins Brentford for a fee of 240k. For someone who hasn't played, I couldn't turn that down.
Joe Nuttall joins from Blackpool for a fee of 17.75k.
Tom Hopper joins from Doncaster for a fee of 21k
This was a top of the table clash so not losing was the only thing on my mind, therefore, I'm happy that we came away with a 1-1 draw.

February 2023
As to be expected we completely dominated the team sitting down at the bottom of the table. It was great to see both our new signings get on the scoresheet.
Another Jerry Yates masterclass and another three points. We are 14 points clear at the top of the table now.
For a while I didn't think we were going to be able to score so I'm delighted that we managed to find the winner 12 minutes from time!
With Grimsby occupying 5th place in League Two, I thought this would be a difficult game. How wrong I was, we eased to victory and all three points.
A narrow win away at Exeter but I'll certainly take it. One win closer to League One.
Another really good win to make it a perfect month. What pleases me most though is that we've kept 5 clean sheets in 6 games...... apart from the fact that the win means we are PROMOTED TO LEAGUE ONE!

GEEEEEEEETTTT IIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNN! A Charles Vernam header in the 93rd minute puts us into the FA Cup Quarter Finals! Pinch me.
3rd March
Southport to host West Ham in the FA Cup Quarter Finals.
After the exploits of the weekend, I gave every player that played in that game rest and put the kids in instead. We ended up losing obviously but I was expecting to so I don't mind.
Back to our usual side and a usual result, an easy win.
Another win to take us to the 100 point mark for the season. What a season it has been.
What an effort. The Premier League class of West Ham shone through in the end but to even go 2-0 up against them is a remarkable achievement for a club of our stature. I'm so proud of each and every one of my players.
