John Warrington: A Footballing Journey
April 2023
A disappointing result, we just didn't perform well enough in the second half.
4th April
Jack Scott and Salah Oulad M'Hand have renewed their loan deals for next season.
A superb result and very very satisfying given it was against Tranmere.
A win against Barrow means we are officially champions of League Two! Fantastic.
Another win to add to the tally. 35 wins in a season is unreal and we could possibly make it 37.
We made hard work of it but we eventually got the win in our last home game of the season.
It was a double party at Plymouth as we completed the season with a win but Plymouth also won automatic promotion as Port Vale also lost. Congrats to them.

August 2023
A great start to the season even if it was a bit disappointing to concede at the end.
Another superb performance and victory.
Wow, I wasn't expecting that. Beating a team from the league above by four goals to one away from home is incredible!
17th August
Southport to travel to Norwich in the EFL Cup 2nd Round.
Not a convincing win but I'll happily take the points.
A great turnaround after going a goal down. I'm really happy with that.
What a result! We went away to a Premier League side and dumped them out of the cup. They'll feel hard done by, do I care? Not a chance.
31st August
Southport to travel to Reading in the Carabao Cup Third Round.

September 2023
A comfortable 4-1 win away at Swindon to maintain our 100% start to the League One season.
5th September
Midfielder Teddy Bishop joins on a free transfer.
Man City U23's win 3-1 on penalties
I rotated the side for our EFL Trophy tie with Man City U23's as I usually do in this competition. The match ended in a draw but we, unfortunately, lost on penalties.
6th September
Midfielder Michael Duffy joins on a free transfer.
Another great 4-1 win away from home, this time against Wycombe.
A superb result against Crawley with Charlie Bulmer grabbing all four goals. That lad has some talent.
We really are on top form at the moment, another relatively easy well.
Reading win 4-3 on penalties
So we're out of the Carabao Cup but we were unlucky. We managed to draw with our Championship opponents but they beat us in the lottery that is penalties. A tough way to go out.
Our 100% start is over. I'm disappointed but if I'm honest Oxford probably shaded the game overall and deserved their win.

October 2023
A really good win that we had to grind out. Really happy with the lads.
Southport win 7-6 on penalties
Happy days. After the disappointment of losing two successive shootouts, it was great to finally win one and it keeps us in with a shout of reaching the knockout stages.
A fantastic win away at a side occupying a playoff place.
23rd October
Southport to travel to Mansfield in the FA Cup 1st Round.
Really disappointed with our performance in this one, especially in front of our own fans.
After the Barnsley game, it was vital that we got back to winning ways so I'm delighted that we managed to win rather comfortably.
On paper, Ipswich away is a tough game but I'm disappointed we didn't win with them going down to ten.

November 2023
A really good win and it was great to see Jerry Yates finally break his goal duck.
Holy ****. What a roller coaster of emotions. I thought we had the game won at 3-0 after 70 minutes only for Lincoln to get the game back to 3-3. I was fuming but then Charlie Bulmer popped up to win it for us with the last kick of the game. Madness.
7th November
Conor Bradley ruled out for 2 months with broken ribs.
Job done and into Round Two.
13th November
Southport to host Yeovil in the FA Cup Second Round.
A goal-fest but the main thing is it means that we qualify for the EFL Trophy knockout rounds.
15th November
Southport to travel to Leeds U23's in the EFL Trophy Northern Section Second Round.
Argh! I'm annoyed that we let a 2-0 lead slip.
FFS! Can we just hold onto a lead. I know I shouldn't really complain but that's two games in a row. Frustrating.
That's more like it! It's good to get back to winning ways after two draws.

December 2023
6th December
Doncaster or Man Utd U23's to host Southport or Leeds U23's in the EFL Trophy Northern Section Third Round.
Our match vs Port Vale has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Preston are bottom so we were massive favourites and the lads didn't disappoint.
An easy win in the FA Cup and now we face a trip to Watford in Round 3.
Delighted with this win. Blackpool were 3rd going into the game so to beat them at their own ground is a fantastic result.
We had to scrap for it but we eventually got all three points at Sheffield Wednesday. Stoppage time was a bit sketchy after the red card I'm not going to lie. It was a relief when the final whistle went.
Gutted, we are out of the EFL Trophy. Leeds U23's were just better than us on the night, not that I think U23's should be in the competition mind you but that's a debate for another day.
A game two days after our EFL Trophy game, thanks EFL. Luckily the lads were magnificent and romped to victory. We are fortunate that we have a squad big enough to rotate the team.
A good boxing day win against Charlton. Merry Christmas!
Doncaster had just announced a new manager so I was fearing the new manager surge but we were just far too good for them. A superb performance.

Young winger Jamie Malone joins on a free transfer from South Shields.
5th January
Joe Rankin-Costello joins on a free transfer.
6th January

What a result! Not only did we beat Championship side Watford, but we were also by far the better side.
7th January
Striker Jayden Stockley joins on a free transfer.
8th January
Southport to travel to Fleetwood or Fulham in the FA Cup 4th Round.
9th January
Southampton offer me a job interview.
Max Haygarth joins Walsall on a free transfer.
With Fleetwood in 3rd in League One a draw away from home isn't a bad result, I'll take it.
10th January
Southampton offered me the job as their new manager but I turned it down due to their unwillingness to invest in the youth set-up.
11th January
Dion McGhee joins Barrow on a free transfer.
Nathan Dale joins Blackpool for a fee of 18k.
A Wycombe equaliser in the 95th minute denies us all three points which is disappointing. That result does take us back to the top of League One though with two games in hand over Oxford.
Great to get back to winning ways with a comfortable win over Swindon at Haig Avenue.
19th January
Tom Hopper joins Exeter for a fee of 39k.
It was a battle but we eventually managed to take home all three points at Bristol Rovers thanks to a George Nunn goal.
A dominant win, really pleased with that performance.
The lads gave it everything but the Championship side were just too strong for us in the end. The fact that we gave a team 3rd in the Championship and pushing for promotion to the Premier League a good game is really pleasing.
31st January
Conor Bradley joins Bradford for a fee of 11.25k.
A very disappointing result to be honest. We should have won this with the chances we had, Ripley in the Fleetwood goal was on fire.

A great result away at 4th placed Huddersfield. It wasn't pretty but we got the job done to bounce back from our two straight defeats.
Given that Port Vale are in the relegation zone, I'm really not happy with this result.
12th February
Jayden Stockley ruled out for 6 weeks with a twisted ankle.
That's more like it, a dominant win away at Barnsley.
HUGE RESULT. 1st vs 2nd and a chance to go 9 points clear and we dominated them from start to finish. Get in.
Another solid win to round out the month in what can only be described as a fiesty game.

March 2024
Yet another dominant win away at Rochdale. We are on fire in front of goal recently. Playing three strikers may have something to do with it.
A proud moment for me and the club as we seal promotion to the Championship, which will be the highest level we've ever played at.
Despite achieving promotion, the lads aren't letting up which is great to see. Another good win.
12th March
Joe Nuttall ruled out for 5-6 weeks with sprained ankle ligaments.
A win but it wasn't quite as straight forward as normal. Coventry played really well and almost pulled off a superb comeback. We have young Kevin Preston in goal to thank for the win, he was magnificent.
29th March

April/May 2024
Only a draw away at Lincoln but that draw means we are CHAMPIONS OF LEAGUE ONE.
We were poor against Hull, one too many beers I reckon after sealing the title.
8th April
Arsenal agree to extend the loan of Salah Oulad M'Hand for another season.
Aston Villa agree to extend the loan of Aaron O'Reilly for another season.
Chelsea agree to extend the loan of Silko Thomas for another season.
A 3-2 win away at Walsall all but confirms their relegation. I feel quite bad for them.
23rd April
Charlie Bulmer will miss the rest of the season after being ruled out for 6 weeks with sprained ankle ligaments.
An easy 3-1 win at home against Port Vale.
We end our season at home in style with a 5-0 win over Blackpool.
We end the season with a 4-1 win way at bottom of the league Preston. What a season it has been! A lot of work ahead to prepare for next season now.
