England aren't that bad but Argentina are a better team.

Probably not actually, take a look at their starting lineups and they're always filled with randomers in midfield and defence.

He probably played for Estudiantes.

Sabella is really loyal to the people who played for him at Estudiantes. Sosa, for example.

That said, Franco di Santo is picked over Erik Lamela, so you may have a point.

No doubt you also thought that about Spain, Brazil, Italy, France and Belgium? And probably every team England have ever faced?

I was incredibly surprised that San Marino never beat England convincingly.

A wage cap is going to be introduce in Serie B, here's the official piece for our Italian speakers: legaserieb.it

It'll be interesting to see how this works, if it's a set limit for all teams (as opposed to a wages to turnover percentage limit) and if there's going to be a bit of leeway in the first year or for newly relegated clubs. I mean, most Serie B clubs are playing to crowds of 5/6k and I can't imagine the TV money is up to much. The likes of Palermo or Genoa would have to totally gut their teams if they went down and it'll be so difficult to bounce back at the first attempt.

You also have to wonder what happens if clubs can't get under the limit, will they drop to Serie C and if so, who'll make room? I've a bad feeling this could get very very messy.

Edit: Seems it's just going to limit individual player wages to €300k a year or €6.25k per week. I'm assuming these are the after tax figures so the actual sums the clubs will play out will be a sight more.

Also, no non-EU players allowed unless they come from a larger Italian club.

Ok, just to clear up the above:
  • The wage cap looks to be €150k basic wage and €150k in performance/appearance bonuses taking it up to €300k
  • The wage cap will apply to new contracts signed from this July onwards, current contracts remain the same which resolves the issue of what happens to relegated clubs - for now anyway.
  • Any club that has new contracts that breach the wage cap will be fined.
  • There'll be a ban on non-EU signings other than from Serie A sides.
  • Serie B sides will be limited to 22 senior players (over 21 I think) which will be reduced to 20 players in time.
  • Their also looking to cut Serie B down to 20 sides

Gigi Buffon's tribute to Francesco Totti on the 20th anniversary of his Serie A debut:

“Dear Francesco, you have made Italian football history. Twenty years in Serie A, what an achievement… I still have the image of your first goal in my mind, it was a Roma-Foggia tie.

“We’re friends, you know how much I care about you. We started together with the U15 side, we had some splendid years together in the national team and we continue to meet as opponents in Serie A.

“You often score against me (10 times to be precise, that’s how many goals you have netted) like a champion who has forgotten our friendship…

“Then, at the final whistle, there are smiles between us again, like when I saved a penalty that I feared you would chip – it saddened me that was you.

“We are from a fortunate generation. It’s true that every season after the age of 30 is worth seven, but you seem to go back in time instead of ageing.

“You’ve written the history of Italian football, with the present and the future – you are a player who can not be doubted.

“And, for me, you’ll always be an Azzurro. An embrace from your friend, Gigi.”

Beautiful.

Italian football is never going to get over its racism problems whilst it still penalizes clubs that go after non-EU talent with restrictive transfer measures.

Yeah, but what's that got to do with Totti?

He's one of those players you just don't want to see retire and I love how he's been at Roma for his whole career. He'll always go down as one of the greats and it's remarkable how he's still going.

Nasty one that.

Diabolical result for Roma today (and team selection). Better not make the same mistake for the derby next week.

Love that Dzemaili tried to show respect to his former club by not celebrating his first two goals but went nuts when he got his third.

Ha, to think he was at Bolton once and never played. I know he was injured for some part of that but still.

He was quite young back then wasn't he? I'd imagine it really affected his settling in at Bolton and in English football.

I can't say I remember him from his season with Torino but he was impressive for Parma and I think they paid a decent price (by their standards) to sign him fully.

Samp - Inter is on (while waiting for Champions League). Inter are 1-0 up at half-time thanks to a fine header from Palacio.

Finished 2-0, another goal from Palacio. Inter look like they've picked up a real gem of a player in Kovacic, he's really improving now he's starting to settle into the side and getting used to his new, deeper role.

Is Palacio a key player for Inter? Every time I've seen them Palacio seems to be their best player, but he seems to be on the bench a lot? Guarin as well.
Hibee

He is now. With everybody fit Milito is their only striker that can lead the line.* So you'd have him spearheading the attack and Cassano or Palacio sitting a little deeper. They've also played all three at the same time and Palacio's good on the outside of an attacking trident.

Guarin's key for them as well, probably their best midfielder this season and about the only one that's a goalscoring threat. I think he was dropped for the Juve game for coming back late from the internationals but more often or not if it's a big game, they'll use him.

*Technically Rocchi can also play as an prima punta but as he's in his mid 30's, fat and hasn't scored for Lazio or Inter all season I didn't think it worth mentioning him.
