After a challenging debut season, Mark faces the daunting task of transforming Lion Heart into title contenders. With the stakes higher than ever, this season unfolds as a test of resilience, strategic decision-making, and the unyielding spirit needed to overcome adversity in the pursuit of footballing success in American Samoa.
CHAPTER 3
- First full season -
After completing his first season at Lion Heart, Mark Thompson was determined to keep the promise he had made to himself before accepting the job. He vowed that he wouldn’t leave the club until they had won every local trophy available. In American Samoa, that meant two key objectives: the League and the Cup - trophies that had eluded Lion Heart despite several close calls, with the club finishing as runners-up numerous times.
Finishing 8th in his debut season underscored the challenge ahead. The team had much work to do, and Mark knew that turning things around wouldn’t be easy. The previous season’s poor finish made it difficult to attract quality players, with many likely hesitant to join a club struggling to make an impact. Mark faced the daunting task of reshaping the squad, instilling a winning mentality, and overcoming the perception of Lion Heart as an underdog. But with his resolve and vision, he knew that the journey ahead, though challenging, was one he was fully committed to seeing through until the very end.
- Before full season -
The dawn of the new season brought with it a renewed sense of purpose for Mark Thompson and Lion Heart. Armed with the experiences and lessons learned from their inaugural campaign, Mark faced the daunting challenge of elevating the team's performance in a league where resources were scarce, and amateur contracts were the norm.
Undeterred by the constraints, Mark was determined to bolster the squad and instill a winning mentality. However, the reality of recruiting top-tier players on amateur contracts proved to be a formidable hurdle. Lion Heart's modest ranking in the league made attracting talent a challenging endeavor. Yet, Mark saw this as an opportunity to unearth hidden gems, nurturing local talent and building a team that would defy expectations.
With a keen eye for potential, Mark scoured local communities, engaging in grassroots initiatives and football development programs. The goal was not just to assemble a squad but to cultivate a tight-knit team with a shared passion for the sport. Player by player, Lion Heart began to take shape, a mosaic of local talent and a few seasoned players who saw potential in Mark's vision.
Training sessions became a melting pot of determination and aspiration, with Mark emphasizing teamwork, discipline, and a commitment to excellence. Despite the financial constraints, the team embraced the amateur spirit, driven by a collective desire to prove that heart and dedication could triumph over adversity. As the season unfolded, Mark's strategic acumen came to the fore. The team, often considered underdogs, surprised opponents with their tenacity and tactical prowess. The stands, once sparsely populated, now echoed with the cheers of passionate fans who recognized the fighting spirit of Lion Heart.
Mark's long-term goal of steering Lion Heart to the top of the league remained a beacon of inspiration. Each match became a stepping stone toward that vision, and with every hard-fought point, the team inched closer to rewriting their narrative in Oceania football. As the season kickoff approached, a palpable sense of excitement enveloped Pago Pago. Lion Heart, though not among the favorites, carried the hopes and dreams of a community eager to witness their team's ascent. The journey that lay ahead was unpredictable, but with Mark Thompson at the helm, Lion Heart was prepared to face the challenges head-on.
As the first whistle of the new season echoed through the stadium at the end of July, Mark and Lion Heart stood on the precipice of a fresh chapter. The season was a canvas waiting to be painted, and the team, with a blend of experienced players and emerging talents, was ready to script a story of resilience, triumph, and the unwavering pursuit of glory in the vibrant world of Oceania football.
- The First five matches -
Lion Heart’s pre-season friendlies delivered mixed results, leaving some uncertainty as they headed into their first league match. However, the team quickly dispelled any doubts with a spirited comeback in their opening game against Utulei. After falling behind 0-1, Lion Heart rallied to secure a 2-1 victory, setting a positive tone for the season.
Just four days later, they faced PanSa and continued their strong start with a convincing 3-1 win. Confidence was building, and the team seemed to be finding their rhythm. But the schedule was relentless, and another match against PanSa came just four days after that, this time in the President’s Cup. Despite both teams struggling to break through, the match ended in a goalless draw, forcing a penalty shootout. Lion Heart held their nerve and came out on top, advancing to the next round of the cup.
With a 20-day break before their next league match against Green Bay, Lion Heart had time to regroup. However, despite taking an early lead, they couldn’t hold on, and the game ended in a disappointing 3-2 defeat. Next up was Pago Youth, where Lion Heart faced a tough challenge. They found themselves down by two goals before halftime but showed resilience by equalizing in the second half, with the last goal coming in the 91st minute. However, their efforts were undone just two minutes later when Pago Youth scored again, handing Lion Heart another 3-2 loss.
Determined to bounce back, Lion Heart entered their fifth league match with renewed focus. They struck early, leading 1-0 after just 6 minutes and doubling their advantage by the 13th minute. Although Tafuna Jets pulled one back before halftime, Lion Heart dominated the second half, adding two more goals to secure a 4-1 victory. After five matches, Lion Heart had recorded 3 wins and 2 losses, showing promise but also revealing areas that needed improvement as they continued their campaign.
- End of first full season -
Fast forward to the end of the season.
The second season under Mark Thompson's management proved to be a rollercoaster of highs and lows for Lion Heart. The initial burst of success saw the team clinch victory in the first three games, including a thrilling penalty shootout triumph in the opening round of the cup. The jubilant atmosphere surrounding the victories hinted at a promising season ahead.
However, the journey took a turn with two consecutive losses that injected an air of challenge. Lion Heart then rallied, securing four consecutive wins, a streak that included progress to the quarterfinals of the cup. The team's resilience shone through, even as a subsequent rough patch saw only 2 points in 4 matches, including three games without finding the net.
Just when doubts began to surface, Lion Heart engineered a remarkable turnaround, winning three consecutive matches, one of which was a nail-biting 4-4 draw decided by penalties in the semifinals of the cup. However, history seemed to repeat itself as another challenging streak followed, with five games without a win leading up to the final in the cup. The cup final brought both excitement and heartbreak as Lion Heart fought valiantly but ultimately succumbed to a 2-3 defeat against Pago Youth. The disappointment, however, was tempered by the realization that the team had come a long way since the previous season.
The final two games in the league showcased the team's character - a draw followed by a win that secured a 5th-place finish, six points higher than the previous year. The players, despite the challenges, had displayed a commendable resilience and growth under Mark's guidance. With the summer break on the horizon, Lion Heart looked back on a season marked by exhilarating victories, tough lessons, and a determined push for success. The prospect of the upcoming season, set to commence in the middle of July, carried a mix of anticipation and determination. Mark, undeterred by the setbacks, was ready to lead Lion Heart into a new chapter, armed with the lessons of the past and a vision for a brighter future in Oceania football.
As the calendar turned to 2025, Mark found himself with nearly six months to strategize his next move in taking Lion Heart to the top. The challenges ahead weighed heavily on his mind. He had crucial decisions to make: Should he bring in new players and risk disrupting the team’s morale? Could he afford to invest in new coaching staff with the limited budget at his disposal? What vision did he have for the future of the club? And perhaps the biggest question of all - was it realistic to aim for the title next season, or was that goal still out of reach?

In this serie we will be focussing on the region of Oceania and the gems of the Pacific. After a solid 5th place finish last season, Mark uses the extended off-season to recruit new talent, build a balanced squad, and prepare for a successful campaign. From their pre-season preparation to the thrilling climax of the year, this chapter highlights the highs and lows as Lion Heart strives for glory.
CHAPTER 4
- Season 2025/26 -
As the season wrapped up, Mark found himself facing a familiar situation - an extended break before the next chapter began. With the new season not set to kick off until mid-July, he was well aware that he had five crucial months ahead. This time was not just a luxury, but a necessity. Mark knew he needed to make the most of it, using every moment to meticulously plan and strategize.
In his debut season, he had taken the team to an 8th-place finish, and in the recently concluded season, they had improved to 5th. The progress was evident, but Mark was not one to rest on his laurels. He had a vision for the club and understood that reaching the next level would require careful thought, smart decisions, and perhaps some bold moves. These five months were his opportunity to fine-tune his approach, evaluate what the team needed, and set the stage for the climb ahead. Mark was fully committed to making the most of this time, knowing that what he did now would shape the future of Lion Heart. And so, with determination and focus, he set to work.
When the transfer window finally opened, Mark was more than prepared - he was ready to hit the ground running. He didn’t just rely on traditional methods; instead, he took a proactive approach, diving deep into the local football scene to engage directly with players from rival clubs. His efforts were meticulous and far-reaching, resulting in the successful recruitment of 17 new players, all signed on free amateur contracts. Among these were four key players from Pago Youth and three from Royal Puma, two of Lion Heart's fiercest competitors.
Mark's strategy was crystal clear: he wanted to build a squad that was not only skilled but also balanced. His aim was to create a team with a wide range of talents - a fusion of promising local players and seasoned individuals who could bring experience and leadership to the table. With these signings, Mark envisioned a team capable of reaching new heights and challenging for top honors in the upcoming season.
Some of the most notable additions to the squad included Roy Ledoux, Kelvin Seong, Akwasi Waita, and Jimmy Dong, with Daniel Raynaud from New Caledonia also joining the ranks.
This strategic recruitment drive, particularly the acquisition of players from rival clubs, not only bolstered Lion Heart's lineup but also added an extra layer of excitement and narrative tension to the upcoming season.
As the transfer deals were sealed and the new signings donned the Lion Heart colors for the first time, a palpable sense of anticipation filled the air in Pago Pago. Fans eagerly looked forward to seeing how Mark's revamped squad would perform on the pitch, with hopes running high for a successful season under his leadership.
- Pre-season -
Six friendlies were scheduled, offering the perfect opportunity for the players to gel and for Mark to assess whether he had made the right signings. It was crucial to see if the new recruits were ready to take on the challenges ahead. However, the first match didn’t inspire much confidence, as Lion Heart suffered a narrow 0-1 loss to Vaiala Tongan.
But things quickly turned around in the second game. New signings Jimmy Dong and Valaauina Vaieli both found the back of the net twice, with Xavior Samuelu adding another, leading Lion Heart to a 5-3 victory over Royal Puma - their first win of the pre-season.
Momentum continued to build in the next match, where Dong and Vaieli once again made their mark, with Vaieli scoring twice to secure a 3-2 win against Ilaoa & To'omata. Vaieli’s impressive form carried on as he netted another two goals in the following match, bringing his total to six goals in just three games. Lion Heart triumphed 5-2 over PanSa.
Next up was Lepea 2, and Lion Heart secured another victory, winning 2-0. The final friendly of the preseason was against Black Roses, where Lion Heart delivered a resounding 6-0 win, capping off an impressive run with five wins out of six friendlies. The team looked well-prepared and ready for the upcoming league matches.
- The first five matches -
The season opener saw Lion Heart face off against Vaiala Tongan, a team that had handed them a defeat just a month earlier. Determined to reverse their fortunes, Lion Heart started the match with intensity and purpose. Newcomer MJ Faoa-Danielson quickly made his mark, finding the back of the net just 7 minutes into the game, giving Lion Heart an early lead and setting the tone for what would be an electrifying first half. The team didn't ease up; within 4 minutes, they struck again, doubling their advantage. Then, just 5 minutes later, MJ was at it again, slotting home his second goal of the match to make it 3-0 by the 16th minute. It was a dream start, showcasing the team's newfound attacking prowess. However, the rest of the game proved more challenging, as Vaiala Tongan mounted a determined comeback, scoring twice. Despite the pressure, Lion Heart held firm to secure a 3-2 victory, signaling a strong start to the season.
Next on the fixture list was a clash against Ilaoa & To'omata. Once again, the new signings delivered. Kelvin Seong was in fine form, scoring twice, while Roy Ledoux and MJ Faoa-Danielson each added a goal to their tally, guiding Lion Heart to an impressive 4-2 win. The team was beginning to find its rhythm, and the new players were blending seamlessly into Mark's tactical setup.
Just six days later, Lion Heart took on Utuleo. The first half was a tightly contested affair, with neither side managing to break the deadlock. But the second half saw Lion Heart step up their game, netting two crucial goals. Though Utuleo managed to pull one back, Lion Heart's resilience shone through as they clinched a 2-1 victory, maintaining their winning streak.
The first game in August brought a matchup against Green Bay. Lion Heart came out with all guns blazing, delivering an explosive performance in the first half, where they scored four remarkable goals. The sheer dominance displayed in those opening 45 minutes allowed the team to take their foot off the gas in the second half, comfortably cruising to a 4-1 victory.
The final fixture in this early stretch of the season was against Royal Puma. In a closely contested battle, Lion Heart once again emerged victorious, securing a 2-1 win and making it five wins from five games.
With a perfect record in their opening five matches, Lion Heart had not only established themselves as early frontrunners in the league but also demonstrated that they were a force to be reckoned with on the pitch. The team's performances were rich in promise, and the fans had every reason to believe that this season could be something special.
- End of season 2025/26 -
Fast forward to the end of calendar year 2025, and the story of Lion Heart continued to unfold in remarkable fashion. The season was a long and grueling one, with no formal transferwindows, allowing Mark the flexibility to sign free transfers whenever the opportunity arose. And he did just that. Throughout the year, he bolstered the squad with some strategic signings, bringing in Izz Kuzminykh from the Marshall Islands, Teitur Kleinhans and Jackson King-Byrne from Bougainville, and just before the year turned, Sami Peter joined the ranks as the final addition for 2025.
This season had been nothing short of extraordinary for Lion Heart. The team had only suffered one defeat and one draw throughout the campaign, establishing themselves as the undisputed leaders at the top of the league. Their nearest rivals, Pago Youth, were trailing, but Lion Heart’s dominance made it clear that it would take something monumental for them to lose their grip on the title.
As the year rolled into 2026, Lion Heart found themselves in familiar territory - back in the final of the cup. Their opponents were none other than Pago Youth, the very team that had bested them in last year’s final. The stage was set for a thrilling rematch, and this was to be the first match of the new year. At Veterans Memorial Stadium, 1,635 eager fans filled the stands, ready to witness a clash between the top contenders: last year’s cup winners, Pago Youth, and the current league leaders, Lion Heart.
The match was a tense affair from the start, with both teams showing why they were considered the best in the league. The first half ended without a goal, and even after 90 minutes of play, the scoreboard remained blank. But just when it seemed like extra time would be needed, Sami Peter, in his very first game for Lion Heart, made his presence felt. In the third minute of added time, he struck the decisive blow, scoring the only goal of the match. The referee’s whistle confirmed Lion Heart’s victory, and the stadium erupted in joy as the team secured their first trophy of the season. The scenes of celebration were unforgettable, as the players and fans reveled in this hard-fought triumph.
With the cup now in their possession, only two league games remained in the season - a fixture against Black Roses and, fittingly, another showdown with Pago Youth to close out the campaign. Lion Heart dispatched Black Roses with a commanding 3-0 victory, setting the stage for a dramatic final against their rivals.
The final match against Pago Youth was anything but ordinary. Unlike the cup final, this game was an intense, high-scoring affair that showcased the very best of Lion Heart. Izz Kuzminykh opened the scoring, followed by goals from Edward Tanito and Kelvin Seong, propelling Lion Heart to a 3-0 lead. But Pago Youth, refusing to go down without a fight, clawed their way back into the game, narrowing the score to 3-2. However, Kuzminykh and Tanito were not finished; both added another goal each, sealing an emphatic 5-2 victory.
As the final whistle blew, Lion Heart could finally celebrate their historic achievement. They had not only won the league title for the first time in the club’s history but had also completed a remarkable double by securing both the cup and the league. It was an achievement that few had believed possible at the season’s outset, but the players had defied expectations and made history. The celebrations that followed were nothing short of euphoric, as Lion Heart’s players and fans alike basked in the glory of their incredible success, dancing and cheering late into the night.

In this serie we will be focussing on the region of Oceania and the gems of the Pacific. In this fifth chapter, we follow the team's journey on the international scene. Their first ever games in this area. But will Lion Heart rise to the challenge? With new signings, intense rivalries, and a shot at international glory, Coach Mark Thompson must navigate the pressure. As the stakes grow higher, will Mark and his squad triumph or crumble under the weight of expectation?
CHAPTER 5
- Season 2026/27 -
As the season came to a victorious end, Mark and his squad basked in the glory of their two trophies. They had successfully navigated a challenging season, and now, with both the domestic title and their national cup-run behind them, there was time for reflection. The next league match wouldn’t take place until mid-July, as per tradition, giving Mark and the team a much-needed break.
But Mark didn’t see it as a time for rest. Instead, he viewed this period as an opportunity to strategize, plan, and make key-moves behind the scenes.
- A Personal Vow -
Mark had made a personal vow long ago: to secure every domestic title possible for Lion Heart. Now, with the club qualifying for the prestigious OFC Champions League, he added a new promise to himself: he would give the competition his all. He was ready to pour his heart and soul into the OFC campaign, and if it meant staying with the club for another full season, so be it. For now, his future was intertwined with Lion Heart’s colors, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
- Securing a New Sponsorship -
The off-season was not only about reflection but also about preparation. The first step Mark took was securing a new sponsorship deal for the team's jerseys. With Lion Heart set to play on the international stage in the OFC Champions League, the sponsor recognized the club's growing stature and was eager to invest more. The financial boost was a critical step in Lion Heart's ascent to even greater heights.
With the new jerseys finalized and the sponsor on board, Mark’s vision for the future started to come together.
- Strengthening the Squad -
With the sponsorship in place, Mark turned his attention to the squad. Before pre-season training even began, he had made six new signings, while four players departed in pursuit of new opportunities.
Among the new recruits were:
These signings were not just about adding numbers but were a reflection of Mark’s ambition. He aimed to blend local talent with international experience, ensuring the squad had the depth and diversity needed for the upcoming season and the OFC competition.
- Departures and Farewells -
While new players arrived, there were also a few notable departures. Jimmy Dong and Valaauina Vaieli both left on free transfers, with Vaieli joining Royal Puma and Dong finding his next challenge at Utulei. Vaieli’s departure wasn’t unexpected, as he had struggled to make an impact with only nine appearances. Jimmy Dong’s exit, however, was a little more surprising, but it opened the door for fresh talent to step in.
- Looking Ahead -
With the off-season moves complete, Lion Heart entered the new season with a renewed sense of ambition. The team had grown stronger, and the excitement of playing on the international stage was palpable. Mark knew the challenges ahead would be tough, but with his new signings and unwavering dedication, Lion Heart was ready to face whatever the next season - and the OFC competition - had in store.
- Pre-season -
During pre-season, Lion Heart played four matches against Lepea 2, Black Roses, Taputimu Youth, and Sogi 2. All four teams were defeated, and Lion Heart extended their incredible unbeaten run, now stretching to 18 matches.
- First Five Games -
The first official league match was a confident 3-0 victory over Black Roses, with newcomer Tecettin Kumsuz scoring his debut goal for the club. In the following game against Vaiala Tongan, Lion Heart produced a mirror result, winning again 3-0. Their third league match saw them face Pago Youth, and the team didn’t disappoint, netting five goals in a 5-1 triumph, repeating their previous dominance over the same opposition.
However, the momentum slowed slightly as the next two matches ended in draws. A scoreless stalemate against PanSa and a 1-1 draw with Tafuna Jets temporarily stalled their winning streak.
- November's Turning Point -
By the time November rolled around, Lion Heart found themselves in a more turbulent period. They had only managed one win in their last four games, and an unfortunate loss on penalties in the cup quarterfinals saw them eliminated from that competition. With two trophies still within their reach, Mark made a crucial move by signing Théo Dumont from New Caledonia, hoping to bolster the squad for the challenges ahead.
The first match of November was a much-needed 2-1 victory over Black Roses, courtesy of two goals from Sami Peter. The win gave the team confidence as they entered their first OFC Champions League game against Island Pitbulls from Micronesia. Lion Heart dominated this encounter, winning 5-1 and advancing further in the tournament.
- Continued Success and International Triumph -
Following the decisive win over Island Pitbulls, Lion Heart secured two more victories as November turned to December. Their next international match was against FANC (Forces Armées de Nouvelle-Calédonie) from Wallis & Futuna, played at FANC’s home stadium. A dedicated group of 18 fans traveled to support the team on that chilly December day.
FANC took the lead late in the first half, and for much of the second, it looked as though Lion Heart might be headed for defeat. However, Izz Kuzminykh had other plans, scoring an equalizer in the 78th minute to keep Lion Heart in the game. Just five minutes later, Akwasi Waita found the back of the net, sealing a 2-1 comeback victory for Lion Heart and propelling them into the final playoff match, which would determine their progression into the group stage.
- Closing League Matches and Final OFC Challenge -
Before the crucial OFC playoff, Lion Heart had two more league matches to contend with. They faced Tafuna Jets and Taputimu Youth, winning 4-1 and 3-2, respectively. These results provided a much-needed morale boost before the international fixture.
The OFC playoff match took place against Waterfall FC from Vanuatu at the Sola Sports Complex. This time, no Lion Heart fans made the journey to support their team. The game itself was a closely contested affair, with very few scoring opportunities. In the end, it was a low-scoring match, but Sami Peter’s goal in the 18th minute proved to be the difference. Lion Heart’s narrow 1-0 victory secured their place in the OFC Champions League group stages.
- End of the Season -
As 2026 neared its end, only one game remained in the calendar year, with a few more to be played in 2027. The final game of the year was against Utulei, resulting in another victory for Lion Heart. With just three league matches left, the team’s attention shifted towards the group stage, with these games scheduled through April, a period that normally coincided with the players’ off-season.
But this year was different.
Both Royal Puma and Green Bay were dispatched in league play, putting Lion Heart on the verge of securing the title. Barring a highly improbable collapse, the league title was already theirs.
- OFC Group Stage -
Lion Heart’s first match in the group stage was against Hekari United FC from Papua New Guinea. Hekari had once lifted the OFC title back in 2010, but this time they couldn’t stand in Lion Heart’s way. In front of a crowd of a thousand, Lion Heart secured a 2-0 victory. A week later, another international match awaited.
However, in between, the final match of the league was still to be played. Lion Heart faced Ilaoa & To’omata, and a narrow 1-0 win saw them claim the league title. The fans were ecstatic, but the players knew the celebrations had to be muted as they still had the OFC matches to focus on.
Just three days later, Lion Heart traveled to Fiji for a match against Suva FC, one of the biggest clubs in Fiji with multiple domestic titles and runners-up in the 2023 OFC. This match proved too much for Lion Heart, who were handed a 3-0 defeat by the superior side.
Two weeks later, Lion Heart faced Auckland City from New Zealand. Auckland, the most dominant team in OFC history, with 7 consecutive titles from 2011 to 2017, displayed their superiority again, winning 2-0 on Lion Heart’s home turf.
- Keeping in Shape and More Matches -
To maintain fitness, a few internal friendlies were arranged, with 20 days passing before their next group-stage match. This time, the team traveled to New Caledonia to face Hienghène Sport, another previous OFC champion, having won the title in 2019. This time, Lion Heart emerged victorious, winning 3-0 with two goals from Izz Kuzminykh and a late strike from Roy Ledoux.
March passed quietly with only friendlies, but April finally arrived, bringing with it a match against Hospital from Nauru. Lion Heart won again, this time 2-1, setting the stage for their next OFC group-stage match in two weeks.
- Progression to Knockouts -
Lion Heart’s final group-stage match took place against Central Coast (SOL) from the Solomon Islands.
On paper, it seemed like a straightforward game for Lion Heart, and it started that way, with Lion Heart taking an early lead. However, after a red card and an equalizer from Central Coast, the first half ended in a draw. Knowing that victory would secure their place in the quarterfinals, Lion Heart pushed hard, and once again, Izz Kuzminykh delivered, scoring the winner in the 83rd minute to make it 2-1.
Lion Heart advanced to the quarterfinals, scheduled for three weeks later.
- Quarterfinal Showdown -
When the day arrived, Lion Heart faced a familiar opponent: Hekari United FC, this time away in Papua New Guinea. Kelvin Seong opened the scoring for Lion Heart after 18 minutes, giving them a 1-0 lead at halftime. Sami Peter added a second goal early in the second half, making it 2-0. As the clock wound down, Hekari United managed to pull one back, but Lion Heart held firm and saw out the game to win 2-1, securing their place in the semifinals.
- Semifinals -
Two weeks later, Lion Heart faced Hienghène Sport once more, in the semifinals. In front of a thousand fans, the match was tightly contested, with neither team able to break the deadlock in regular time.
Extra time was required, and Roy Ledoux put Lion Heart ahead after 93 minutes. However, just five minutes later, Hienghène equalized, pushing the game to penalties. Lion Heart held their nerve and won the shootout, advancing to the OFC final, set for June 5th, 2027.
- The OFC Final -
The final pitted Lion Heart against another New Zealand side, Auckland United, at the Veterans Memorial Stadium in American Samoa. The match drew a crowd of 4,760 spectators, 187 of whom supported Auckland United. Despite Auckland’s strong domestic record, they had yet to secure an international title.
Kelvin Seong wasted no time, scoring after just 8 minutes and doubling his tally by the 14th minute, giving Lion Heart an early 2-0 lead. Auckland United responded with a goal in the 16th minute, but Sami Peter restored Lion Heart’s two-goal cushion, making it 3-1 by halftime.
In the second half, both teams scored once more, but as the final whistle blew, the roar of the crowd was deafening. Mark stood on the touchline, watching his players embrace and celebrate their 4-2 victory. Lion Heart had done it. Against all odds, they had captured their first international cup, lifting the OFC Champions League trophy high into the night sky. The confetti rained down, mixing with the ecstatic cheers of the 4000 fans who had stormed the pitch in celebration. Even Mark couldn’t escape the jubilation, as he found himself lifted by the crowd, tossed into the air like one of his players.
As the celebrations swirled around him, Mark couldn’t shake a nagging thought at the back of his mind. This moment - the culmination of years of hard work - was supposed to feel final, like the ultimate achievement. Yet, instead of satisfaction, there was a strange emptiness, a whisper that this was only a chapter in a much larger story.
- The End of One Journey, the Start of Another -
Later that night, long after the fans had gone home and the stadium lights dimmed, Mark found himself alone in his office, staring at the trophy sitting proudly on his desk. It was everything he had worked for, but now that it was in his hands, he couldn’t help but wonder—what came next?
His phone buzzed on the table. A message from an unknown number flashed on the screen:
"Congratulations, Mark. But there's more ahead for you. Much more."
He frowned, unsure whether to be intrigued or unsettled. The message was cryptic, but something in his gut told him it was important. Was it an offer from another club? A new opportunity? Or simply a reminder that success, once achieved, was fleeting?
Mark leaned back in his chair, gazing out the window at the moonlit field. He had led Lion Heart to an international title, but deep down, he knew this was only the beginning of something greater. His journey with the club, and in football, was far from over.
As dawn broke over the horizon, Mark made a decision. He wasn’t done yet. Lion Heart’s international triumph had opened doors he hadn’t even known existed—and the path forward, though uncertain, was calling him.
But where would that path lead?
Mark stood, the weight of the night lifting from his shoulders, and left the office. As he walked down the tunnel toward the exit, he smiled, a quiet determination filling his chest.
Whatever came next, he was ready.

CHAPTER 6
- Season 2027/28 -
The 2027/28 season was fast approaching, and with the late conclusion of the OFC Champions League, pre-season preparations were brief. Despite the short window, new players arrived, and some familiar faces departed. A few younger players would only join once they turned 18, in compliance with transfer regulations. Among the new arrivals were promising talents like Oscar Delgadillo from Bolivia, Mohammed Al Obaidi from Libya, Valdimar Arason and Davíð Eiríksson from Iceland, and Miguel Cagua from Ecuador - all eager for fresh adventures.
However, departures also occurred. Flavio Neff made his move to AS Lössi in New Caledonia, while Sekone Faaoga left for rivals Royal Puma. With these changes, Mark felt the winds of transformation sweeping through Lion Heart, both in the squad and in himself.
- A Strong Start -
Barely a month after their OFC triumph, Lion Heart was back on the pitch for the new season. Their first match saw them dominate Taputimu Youth with a resounding 6-1 victory. Izz Kuzminykh, Akwasi Waita, and Tacettin Kumsuz all found the back of the net, while Kelvin Seong secured a brace.
The next four games were just as successful. They secured a 2-0 win over Vaiala Tongan, a 2-1 victory against Pago Youth, triumphed 3-2 over Black Roses, and capped it with a 2-0 victory against Ilaoa & To’omata. Lion Heart was on top of the league, and everything seemed to be falling into place.
- Reflections and Decisions -
Despite the success, Mark couldn’t shake the feeling that his time with Lion Heart was nearing its natural end. He had accomplished everything he set out to do in American Samoa: winning the league, the local cup, and, perhaps most impressively, the OFC Champions League. Appointed as manager in December 2023, he had built something special - but now, he sought a new challenge.
Mark began searching for a new chapter in Oceania. He wanted to manage a team that could compete for the highest honors in its domestic league. He wasn’t interested in a project that involved a promotion battle; he needed a club with immediate potential. But despite his efforts, nothing caught his eye for some time.
- The Turning Point -
As Lion Heart continued their undefeated run, securing wins against Tafuna Jets (2-0), Utulei (4-3), and Green Bay (3-0), along with a 3-3 draw against PanSa, Mark felt a growing sense of satisfaction. The team was playing the kind of football he had envisioned, and their dominance in the league was undeniable.
But after the last game, Mark went home and checked his emails. There it was - the response he had been waiting for. The club he had applied to was impressed by his journey with Lion Heart and wanted to set up a meeting the next morning. The email outlined several key points, and Mark knew he had to be prepared.
He replied immediately, agreeing to the meeting at 9:00 a.m. He then sent a quick message to his staff, instructing them to gather the players for training at 11:00 a.m., where he would have something important to announce.
- A New Opportunity -
The next morning, Mark sat in front of his computer, ready for the call. The representatives from the new club introduced themselves and spent the next hour discussing how they saw him fitting into their future. They admired his achievements with Lion Heart and believed he could bring the same success to their club.
As the call wrapped up, Mark had made his decision. He was ready to take on this new challenge, even though it meant saying goodbye to Lion Heart. Due to league regulations, the club couldn’t pay Lion Heart a transfer fee, so Mark would need to resign before finalizing the contract.
- The Farewell -
Mark arrived at training as usual, but this time felt different. He called the players and staff together on the pitch, knowing that none of them were ready for what he was about to say.
“This is a difficult day,” Mark began, “but first, I want to congratulate you all on what we’ve achieved together. Winning the league, the domestic cup, and of course, the OFC Champions League - it’s been a dream come true for me to see how far this team has come. We're leading the league once again, and I couldn’t be prouder. But as you may have guessed, I’ve spoken with the chairman, and we’ve come to a mutual agreement. I’m stepping down as manager.”
The players stared in shock, the reality of his words sinking in.
“Yesterday’s victory was my last with you as your manager. But I have no doubt you’ll continue to win titles and succeed in the future. It’s been a pleasure watching you grow into the incredible team you are today, and I wish you all the best.” Mark’s voice cracked slightly, but he held firm.
One by one, the players embraced him, their respect and admiration palpable. It was a bittersweet moment for everyone.
- The Next Chapter -
After the emotional farewell, Mark packed up his office, taking one last look at the trophies he had won with Lion Heart. He made his way to the chairman’s office, where a short video was recorded to inform the fans of his decision. After a final handshake with the chairman, Mark left the building and headed home.
Later that evening, he signed his new contract. Starting on September 21, 2027, he would officially be the manager of his new club. That meant he had just 14 days to pack up his life in American Samoa and prepare for the next chapter of his journey.
And so, Mark found himself on the brink of yet another adventure, the future once again uncertain - but this time, filled with new possibilities.

CHAPTER 7
- Introduction -
The day arrived – Tuesday, September 21, 2027. Mark Thompson found himself not only in a new place but also in a new country. A nation nearly 2,900 kilometers away from American Samoa, which he had left just a week earlier. This new land he was to call home was the Marshall Islands, one of the few atoll-based nations in the world. A country that had been under U.S. administration until 1979 and, before that, occupied by the Japanese. Majuro, the bustling capital and largest city, housed nearly half of the country’s population of approximately 32,000. In the Marshall Islands, the primary language is Marshallese, also known as Ebon, though many people speak English as well. But Mark wasn’t here for the language – he was here for football. And not the American kind.
Soccer in the Marshall Islands had little history. Before 2020, the sport was virtually non-existent. In 2022, however, the Marshall Islands Soccer Federation hired a British coach to build the foundation of a national soccer structure, including school and youth development programs. By 2023, a GoFundMe campaign had been launched to raise funds for equipment to grow the sport, with the ambitious goal of achieving FIFA membership by 2030.
The country's premier league, the Marshall Islands Soccer League, was where Mark found his team.
- The Team -
Just outside the capital Majuro, Mark’s new team, Nutmeg...Sub!, was relatively new to the league – just like most of the teams in the nation. The league was an amateur one, started in 2023, and thus had a short history. In the four seasons played so far, the championships had been split between FC Swell, with two titles, and Spartans and Ebeye Fly, with one title each. Nutmeg’s record over those four seasons was modest: 7th, 8th, 2nd, and 5th place finishes in a league of eight teams. The league structure prioritized making the top four after 14 games to qualify for the playoff semifinals.
When Mark took charge, only four games remained in the season, and Nutmeg still had a shot at breaking into the top four.
- Meeting the Team -
Mark’s arrival coincided with a break in the season, giving him a few weeks to settle in and get to know his players before their first game on October 10. Expectations were low; neither the board nor the players anticipated much success this season – though a miracle would, of course, be welcome.
Despite modest ambitions, Mark’s presence invigorated the players. Together, they looked toward a fresh direction, with hope that he could help them push that final step toward a playoff spot – if not this year, then in the seasons to come.
- First game -
October arrived, and so did Mark’s first game. The Majuro Track and Field Stadium, the island’s sole soccer venue, was a short drive from Mark’s cozy apartment nestled in Majuro’s heart. In truth, the Marshall Islands had no “big cities,” with only a single main road circling about half of the atoll.
The season opener was against Bako. Nutmeg conceded three goals before scoring a consolation, eventually losing 1-3. It was not the ideal start for Mark, but they had another game in six days.
- Second game -
Their next match was against Spartans, and this time, things clicked. Nutmeg took control and triumphed with a resounding 3-0 victory. The win reinvigorated the team, though they now faced a long 15-day wait before their next game.
- Third game -
Facing Ebeye Fly, Nutmeg struggled once more, falling short in a 1-3 loss. The playoff dream grew more distant. With a 20-day break ahead, Mark had to devise a plan to secure a top-four spot against all odds.
- Final Game of the League -
On the eve of the last match, fortune smiled on Nutmeg. Spartans, one of their key rivals, lost, ending their season with 19 points. Nutmeg, with 20 points, held onto fourth place. No other teams were within reach, so the final game carried no pressure – Nutmeg was already in the playoffs. Their opponents? League-topping FC Swell, whom they had already drawn with earlier in the season. Against all odds, Nutmeg held out for another draw, scoring in the 93rd minute despite being a man down, finishing 1-1.
- Semifinal -
Eight days later, Nutmeg faced FC Swell again in the semifinal, a high-stakes rematch. Nutmeg’s Nickia Hunter scored in the 39th minute, and that single goal proved enough. Nutmeg had managed the impossible: they were in the final, knocking out the league leaders.
- The Final -
The ultimate challenge awaited – a face-off with Ebeye Fly. Ebeye took the lead with a penalty in the 49th minute, and as the clock ticked down, Nutmeg’s dream seemed to be slipping away. But in the 90th minute, Hunter struck again with a last-minute equalizer, sending the match to extra time. No goals were scored in the added period, so it came down to a penalty shootout.
Both teams scored three penalties, but fate was cruel. Nutmeg’s Nickia Hunter missed, and though Ebeye’s Thompson missed as well, the final kick fell to Nutmeg’s Knight. Unfortunately, the pressure proved too much; Knight missed, while Ebeye Fly clinched the win with their final penalty. Nutmeg had come heartbreakingly close, only to fall short at the last hurdle.
- Recap -
Mark’s first season was nothing short of dramatic. In just six games, he took Nutmeg to the playoff final, narrowly missing out on the trophy. Now, he had six months to regroup and strategize. He’d likely take a bit of time off – after all, he hadn’t yet had the chance to explore the Marshall Islands properly. But soon enough, he’d be back to the grind, alongside his team, with the goal clear: to return next season and finish with the trophy.

CHAPTER 8
- Exploration and Preparation -
Mark's new journey with his team began on a rather unconventional note. With a generous six-month gap until their next game, he took the opportunity to fulfill a promise he'd made to himself—to explore the breathtaking landscapes of the Oceania region. In a bold decision, he informed the board of his plans and requested that the players be given a three-month hiatus from training. The board approved, issuing a statement to the players that no formal practice sessions would take place during this period. However, there were conditions: the players were mandated to maintain their fitness through a weekly running schedule tailored individually for each of them. The common minimum? Covering 15 kilometers per week. The coaches would track progress using a monitoring app, and failure to meet this target would result in a disadvantage when competing for starting positions during pre-season. Mark considered this a fair and necessary rule.
Unlike the players, Mark’s time was his own. He decided to embark on an adventure to explore the Marshall Islands' atolls. Among the 29 atolls, he was particularly drawn to the storied Bikini Atoll—a place steeped in history and intrigue. With its lush yet haunting legacy, it beckoned Mark to learn more.
- The History of Bikini Atoll -
Mark joined a guided tour of Bikini Atoll, eager to absorb the wealth of knowledge it offered. The guide, an expert on the atoll’s history, shared fascinating stories that painted a vivid picture of the land’s past.
Bikini Atoll, with a modest land area of 6 square kilometers, had been inhabited for roughly 3,600 years. Written records show that the Spanish were the first Europeans to stop at the atoll in 1529, naming it "Los Jardines" or "The Gardens." According to accounts, the Spanish feasted with the islanders, but a demonstration of a musket’s power scared the locals, prompting them to flee.
In the early 19th century, Baltic-German explorer Otto von Kotzebue became the first westerner to document the atoll during his 1816-1817 voyages, naming it Eschscholtz Atoll after his ship’s naturalist. However, the name "Bikini"—derived from the Marshallese word Pikinni—eventually stuck. Translating to “surface of coconuts,” it perfectly captured the atoll’s tropical essence, making it an attractive site for coconut production under German annexation in 1885. The atoll’s inhabitants were recruited to harvest and process coconuts for oil production.
The tides of history turned again in 1914 when Japan seized control of the Marshall Islands during World War I. They fortified the islands for strategic purposes, but left much of Bikini to its local residents. That changed during World War II, as the Marshall Islands became a critical outpost for Japanese forces. After fierce battles in 1944, such as those at Eniwetok and Kwajalein, the United States captured the islands. Remnants of these conflicts, including a sunken airplane graveyard with over 150 U.S. aircraft near Roi-Namur, still lie beneath the waters, a silent testament to history.
- The Nuclear Era -
After World War II, Bikini Atoll became the stage for a new kind of conflict. Its isolation made it an ideal site for U.S. nuclear testing between 1946 and 1958. The atoll’s leader, King Juda, reluctantly agreed to the relocation of his people, declaring, "Men otėmjej rej ilo bein Anij," or “Everything is in God’s hands.” The islanders were moved to other atolls, including the uninhabited Rongerik Atoll, which was unsuitable for sustained living and believed to be haunted by the “Demon Girls of Ujae.”
Over 67 nuclear tests were conducted on Bikini Atoll, rendering it uninhabitable for decades. Among these was the 1952 hydrogen bomb test—a catastrophic explosion 1,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. The blast vaporized three islands, scattering radioactive fallout across the region. Children on nearby atolls played in the ash-like fallout, unaware of the deadly consequences. The tragic aftermath left many suffering from radiation-related illnesses.
Attempts to resettle the atoll in the late 1960s were short-lived. Rising levels of radioactive cesium-137 in residents’ bodies led to another evacuation in the late 1970s. Legal battles ensued, and while the U.S. established a trust fund for cleanup and reparations, the payouts fell far short of what was needed. By 2001, only 70 of the original 167 relocated islanders were still alive. Despite being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, Bikini Atoll remains uninhabitable, though it attracts tourists for its diving spots and historical significance.
- A Sobering Visit -
Mark’s visit to Bikini Atoll left a profound impression. The guide’s parting remarks, including the lighter note that SpongeBob SquarePants’ fictional home of Bikini Bottom was inspired by the atoll, did little to overshadow the sobering lessons of its history. Even the iconic bikini swimsuit, introduced just days after the first nuclear test, was a stark reminder of the atoll’s legacy—a paradoxical mix of destruction and cultural symbolism.
- Back to Work -
Returning to Majuro, Mark felt a renewed sense of purpose. His time exploring the region’s history and natural beauty had deepened his understanding of the resilience of the Marshallese people. With his spirit invigorated, he shifted his focus back to football, scouting new talent to strengthen his team. Among the fresh recruits were:
- Pre-Season Kickoff -
By late March 2028, pre-season preparations were in full swing. The team gathered weeks ahead of their first friendlies to build fitness and cohesion. The results were promising:
Four wins out of four—a testament to the team’s growing potential. With another month of preparation ahead, the team’s eyes were set on the league opener in mid-July against Kwaj Rejects. For Mark, the journey was only beginning.

CHAPTER 9
- Pre-Season and Friendlies -
As preparations for the upcoming season intensified, Nutmeg … Sub scheduled four friendlies before their first league match in July. The opening friendly against Bako ended in a thrilling 4-4 draw. This was followed by a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Spartans. The third match saw Nutmeg facing their under-19 squad in an internal scrimmage, with the senior team prevailing 6-3. The final friendly, however, resulted in a narrow 4-5 loss to Ebeye Fly, leaving the team eager to iron out their weaknesses before competitive action.
- League Campaign Begins -
The league season kicked off on July 16th against Kwaj Rejects. Nutmeg started with a bang, scoring four goals within the first 25 minutes, three of which came in the opening 13 minutes. Their dominant start led the manager to believe the match would be a straightforward victory. However, Kwaj Rejects mounted a spirited comeback, scoring three goals before halftime to narrow the gap to 4-3. In the dying moments of injury time, a 96th-minute equalizer from Kwaj Rejects sealed a 4-4 draw, leaving the Nutmeg squad and their fans deflated.
Determined to bounce back, Nutmeg faced Ebeye Fly in their next game, securing a convincing 4-2 victory. Against Spartans 2, they delivered another solid performance, winning 3-0. Three weeks later, they faced Spartans again, this time achieving a dominant 4-0 win. Just three days later, Nutmeg edged out KFC with a narrow 1-0 victory.
By the end of their first five matches, Nutmeg remained unbeaten, with 16 goals scored and just six conceded.
- Mid-Season Success -
In their next three matches, Nutmeg picked up another seven points. A 3-1 win against Spartans 2, a 1-1 draw with KFC, and a 3-0 victory over FC Swell showcased their consistency. However, their unbeaten run ended in their ninth match with a narrow 2-3 loss to Spartans.
Following this setback, Nutmeg roared back to form, winning their next four matches: 4-2 against Bako, 3-1 against FC Swell, 5-0 against Kwaj Rejects, and another 4-2 triumph over Bako.
In the final league game of the season, Ebeye Fly avenged their earlier defeat with a 3-1 victory over Nutmeg. However, this result had no bearing on Nutmeg’s fate, as they had already secured a top-four finish and a spot in the playoffs.
- OFC Qualification Rounds -
Before the league playoffs, Nutmeg participated in the OFC qualifier rounds. Their first match in November was a rematch against Ebeye Fly, who had beaten them just days earlier. This time, Nutmeg delivered a decisive 3-0 victory to advance to the second round.
In Round 2, they faced Comp Phos from Nauru in an away fixture. Nutmeg stormed to a 3-0 lead by halftime, with goals including a penalty. Comp Phos managed to score twice, including a penalty of their own, but Nutmeg added a fourth from the spot to secure a 4-3 victory.
In the third round, Nutmeg faced Lae City Football Club from Papua New Guinea. Unfortunately, their attacking prowess faltered, and they suffered a 3-1 defeat, ending their OFC qualifying campaign.
- League Playoffs -
With their OFC run behind them, Nutmeg turned their attention to the league semifinals, where they faced FC Swell. Having beaten Swell twice earlier in the season, Nutmeg entered the match with confidence. Their dominance showed as they cruised to a 5-1 victory, earning a place in the final against Bako.
- The Final Showdown -
The final against Bako proved to be a nail-biter. Both teams struggled to find the breakthrough during regular time and extra time, leaving the outcome to be decided by a penalty shootout.
Bako scored their first penalty, and Nutmeg’s Hunter matched them. However, when Sadaka missed Nutmeg’s second attempt, Bako seized the advantage. Both teams converted their subsequent penalties, but Bako clinched the win with their fifth, leaving Nutmeg heartbroken once again.
- Season Recap -
For the second consecutive season, Nutmeg secured a top-four finish and advanced to the league final. Their journey in the OFC qualifiers also saw them progress to the third round, demonstrating growth on the international stage. However, for the second year in a row, they suffered the agony of losing a final on penalties.
The back-to-back final defeats were a bitter pill to swallow for Mark Thompson and his squad, but they remained determined to make the next season their breakthrough.
- Transfers and Looking Ahead -
On the transfer front, Nutmeg welcomed several new players in mid-December, ready for the next campaign. However, they also lost two players during the season, including Carlos Menéndez, who joined FC Swell in August. Nutmeg took great satisfaction in defeating Swell multiple times, likely leaving Menéndez questioning his decision to leave the superior team.
With a six-month break ahead, Nutmeg has ample time to regroup and prepare for another push for glory. Their sights are firmly set on lifting the league trophy in December 2029.

CHAPTER 10
- A Summer of Reflection and Recruitment -
The months leading up to the new season offered Nutmeg’s players a well-deserved break from football. They were free to relax and recharge, but as with every season, their choices during this downtime would directly affect their position in the squad.
While the players enjoyed their holidays, manager Mark Thompson stayed busy. He spent countless hours scouting for fresh talent and strengthening the team. By the time preseason preparations began, Mark had brought in 12 new signings, including one notable player from rival club Spartans. These acquisitions either bolstered the starting lineup or added valuable depth to the squad.
However, no one’s position was safe. Mark had priorities for certain positions, but he made it clear: players who returned from the break out of shape would see their status change quickly.
- Preseason Friendlies -
Nutmeg kicked off their preseason in mid-May with five friendlies to prepare for the coming campaign. The matches were a mixed bag of results. They started on a shaky note with a defeat but soon found their rhythm, claiming narrow victories and showcasing moments of promise. Though they suffered another setback in the fourth game, they ended their preseason campaign on a high note with a dominant and confidence-boosting 5-1 victory.
Despite the ups and downs, the team looked ready as they turned their attention to the first league match against FC Swell on July 15th, 2029.
- The League Begins -
The much-anticipated first league match finally arrived, and Nutmeg faced FC Swell. The opening 45 minutes were tense, with both teams struggling to break the deadlock. As the halftime whistle blew, the players returned to their dressing rooms still confident they could win the game.
The breakthrough came 23 minutes into the second half when Djevencio Rijssel scored the first goal for Nutmeg. From there, the team pressed on, and a late goal sealed the 2-0 victory, marking a strong start to the season.
- A Dominant Run -
Over the next four matches, Nutmeg proved their quality. They went on a scoring spree, netting an impressive 16 goals while conceding just 5. Victories came in convincing fashion, including scorelines of 5-2, 5-2, 3-0, and 3-1.
The team’s momentum was halted in the first game of August, where they were held to a 0-0 draw against KFC. However, they quickly recovered, marking the halfway point of the season with a decisive 3-0 win against Spartans.
At this stage, Nutmeg had yet to lose a game. The question now was: Could they keep this unbeaten run alive?
- Five More Games -
Nutmeg’s strong form carried into the next five matches, where they faced familiar opponents. Despite the challenges, the team remained undefeated, extending their unbeaten streak to 12 games.
With consistent performances, Nutmeg firmly secured a spot in the top four, ensuring qualification for the semifinals—just as in previous seasons.
- Semifinals on the Horizon -
After completing their 13th league match, Nutmeg faced an additional challenge: an OFC Champions League qualifier. This saw the team travel to Niue to play against Alofi. Unfortunately, the trip turned into a disappointment, as Nutmeg returned home with a crushing 1-5 defeat.
Their struggles continued in the final league match of the season. Nutmeg suffered their first league defeat, losing 2-5 to KFC. With the semifinals just four weeks away, the team needed to regain their momentum.
To rebuild confidence, Mark scheduled a friendly match, and Nutmeg responded well, securing a 2-1 victory.
- The Semifinals -
December arrived, and so did the highly anticipated semifinal against Spartans, a team Nutmeg had already beaten twice this season with a combined score of 6-1.
Nutmeg started well, scoring the opening goal of the match. However, their lead was short-lived as Spartans equalized just 7 minutes later.
The second half brought more drama. Spartans struck twice, pulling ahead 3-1. Nutmeg fought back with a goal to make it 3-2, but Spartans responded almost immediately, scoring again to make it 4-2 with only 20 minutes left on the clock.
Nutmeg managed to find another goal late in the game, but by then, time had run out. The referee’s whistle confirmed the final score: a 4-3 defeat. It was another heartbreaking loss for Nutmeg, who once again fell short of the trophy they so desperately desired.
- Season Recap: Success or Failure? -
For much of the season, Nutmeg had been exceptional. They remained unbeaten in the league until the final match and reached the semifinals once again. However, in this league’s structure, winning the finals was all that truly mattered, and finishing on top during the season meant little without a championship trophy.
Their performance in the OFC Champions League also ended in disappointment, with the team unable to progress beyond the qualifiers.
For manager Mark Thompson, it was a season of reflection. Despite his efforts to strengthen the squad with new signings, the team had fallen short. Was he still the right man for the job? Should he step aside and let someone else take the reins, or should he continue and try to make it happen next season?
These were the questions Mark now faced as he looked toward the next six months. While the fans largely celebrated the team’s success, Mark questioned himself deeply. He knew he had time to reflect—and to find the answers he needed.

CHAPTER 11
- Season 2030 – A Year to Remember -
The 2030 season officially began on July 12, 2030, but Nutmeg…Sub! had already been busy long before then. True to form, manager Mark Thompson made the most of the pre-season, organizing several friendlies while strengthening the squad with fresh talent. Determined to build a team capable of competing for the title, Mark scoured the transfer market and added seven new players to the roster.
The recruitment process began in February with the arrival of Mohamed Gabsi from Tunisia and Artur Manukyan from Armenia—both signed on free transfers. In March, the team welcomed Daniel Kouadio from Côte d’Ivoire, followed by two local signings in April. Matthew Denkov, formerly of Bako, joined Nutmeg, leaving behind his old club, while Mark Boikov made a similar move, departing Ebeye Fly to sign for Mark Thompson’s side. By June, the squad was further reinforced with Khachik Tadevosyan from Armenia and Kenichiro Nakamura from Japan, completing the transfer window.
While Nutmeg had bolstered its ranks, the team also bid farewell to Roger Damme, who left to join Panatina Kings FC in the Solomon Islands. Damme departed with a respectable record of 32 appearances and 7 goals, leaving behind big shoes to fill.
The pre-season preparations featured six friendlies, but the early results didn’t inspire much confidence. Nutmeg opened with a draw against KFC and followed it up with a loss to FC Swell, leaving Mark concerned about the team’s readiness. However, his worries were quickly alleviated as Nutmeg turned things around spectacularly. They stormed to victory in the next four matches, crushing Kwaj Rejects 6-1, edging Bako 4-2, exacting revenge against KFC 4-3, and demolishing their own U-19 team 9-0. By the end of pre-season, Nutmeg looked sharp and primed for the season ahead.
- League Campaign – A Tale of Two Halves -
Nutmeg hit the ground running when the league began, and their opening games made a bold statement. The first match saw them dismantle FC Swell 5-0, combining lethal attacking play with defensive solidity. Their momentum carried into the second match, where they overwhelmed KFC 5-3 despite conceding three goals. The third match was even more impressive - a 4-0 victory over Ebeye Fly, marking their second clean sheet in three games. With three wins from three and an avalanche of goals, Nutmeg looked unstoppable.
However, the team’s form soon faltered. In their fourth game, they suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat against Spartans, ending their perfect start. This was followed by a 1-1 draw with Kwaj Rejects and another frustrating 3-3 draw against Spartans 2. For the first time in the season, Nutmeg found themselves struggling to win matches.
They finally broke their winless streak in the seventh game, claiming a 3-1 victory over Bako just before the halfway point. Despite the rocky stretch, Nutmeg remained in contention for a playoff spot. At mid-season, they had 14 points, trailing Kwaj Rejects by three but with two games in hand.
- Second Half – The Push for Playoffs -
The second half of the season began with renewed determination. Nutmeg scraped a hard-fought 1-0 win over KFC, but their momentum was soon interrupted by a three-week break without matches. To maintain match fitness, Mark organized three friendlies, producing mixed results - a win, a draw, and a loss.
When the league resumed, Nutmeg’s struggles returned. A 1-1 draw with FC Swell was followed by a string of scoreless encounters - 0-0 draws against Ebeye Fly and Spartans 2. The pattern continued with a 2-2 draw against Spartans and a 3-3 draw against Kwaj Rejects. With five games without a win, Nutmeg’s playoff hopes began to hang by a thread.
Heading into the final match against Bako, Nutmeg had already secured second place with 22 points, but their inability to finish first meant that the league title was out of reach. That final game ended in disappointment as Nutmeg fell 0-3, leaving them to focus on the playoffs as their last shot at silverware.
- Playoffs – Redemption and Triumph -
In the semifinals, Nutmeg faced Bako, the very team that had defeated them just a week earlier. Determined to avenge that loss, Nutmeg rose to the occasion. With goals on either side of halftime, they claimed a 2-0 victory, securing their place in the final for the first time in two years.
The final brought them face-to-face with Kwaj Rejects, a team they had failed to beat in two league encounters. The match promised to be a tense affair, and it did not disappoint.
Kwaj struck early, scoring in the 2nd and 28th minutes, but Nutmeg refused to back down. Matthew Denkov ignited the comeback with a goal in the 42nd minute and followed it up with a penalty just before halftime, leveling the score at 2-2. The second half brought more drama as Kwaj reclaimed the lead, but Michael Da Silva equalized in the 71st minute, pushing the match into extra time.
Neither side managed to break the deadlock in extra time, leaving the championship to be decided by penalties.
The shootout was filled with tension. Kwaj missed their first attempt, but Nutmeg’s Jinyi Sadaka failed to capitalize. Both teams converted their next three penalties, but when Kwaj’s McEvoy saw his shot saved by Nutmeg’s keeper Brooker, the stage was set. Joel Knight had the chance to seal the win but struck the post, prolonging the agony.
Finally, after another Kwaj miss, Michael Da Silva stepped up. Calm and composed, he sent the keeper the wrong way, securing Nutmeg’s first-ever league title.
- Recap – A Season of Resilience -
Despite facing setbacks and inconsistency throughout the season, Nutmeg’s determination carried them through. They earned a playoff spot, overcame adversity, and emerged as champions in dramatic fashion.
For Mark Thompson, this victory was the culmination of years of hard work and perseverance. At long last, he could lift the trophy he had chased since the beginning of his Marshall Islands chapter. With the title secured, Mark could finally enjoy a six-month break, reflecting on the journey that brought him here.
But as one story ends, another begins. The question now is - what’s next for Mark Thompson in his Oceanian Odyssey?
