It's definitely more than advertising. They've funded research into various different fields which may have produced new technologies that could be very useful in a variety of fields.

In addition to that they've funded jobs when they could have just banked the money, given the global recession (or at least recession among many western countries) and all that seems like a pretty beneficial thing for others.
