It's now official.

Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached agreement to sign 20-year-old defender Guillermo Varela from Uruguayan club Club Atlético Peñarol for an undisclosed fee.

Guillermo will immediately join up with the Uruguay Under-20 squad for the upcoming FIFA Under 20 World Championships in Turkey.

I'd rather play Smalling there, leaving Jones and Evans for cover in the centre.

Still, we shall see.

It's a waste of a very good centre back though.

Yeah, I'd rather Jones played right back than Smalling.

Is this a Moyes or a Ferguson transfer?

I imagine it's been on the cards for a while.

A lot of these sort of transfers are just going to be the young players found by the scouts that were assigned by Ed Woodward to go after regardless.

He had a trial with us before Fergie's retirement I think.

Apparently they've stopped selling Valencia 7 tops at the megastore. This is either (a) bollocks (most likely), (b) he's asked for a different number, (c) Valencia is leaving or (d) RONALDO.

I doubt even Sir 'Arry would spunk out on Tony V so it is more likely (if true) they know he has a different number next year

really cant see Ronaldo coming, as much as it breaks my heart. I think all these little things like him saying he hasnt signed a new contract, his house in Madrid going up or sale and now this rumour are just gonna get our hopes up and i really don't want it to

People who have a soft spot for him, he was fantastic a few seasons ago.

Still hoping he was just carrying injuries or something and will be fine next season, but I doubt it.

Rene's gone to be Ass Man at Anzhi.

Bit annoyed at that tbh.

I think all the backroom staff changes will backfire.

Could be a gamble that. Some very experienced and talented backroom staff left during the summer.

So according to David Moyes we'll be keeping Wayne Rooney.

Who would take him that would be a step up, to be honest?

As a Manchester United fan I don't think there is a step up, but I'm bias!!

I guess you have talk of Real Madrid and Barcelona although I imagine PSG would probably pay him an absolute fortune to move to Paris, you know them showing that they can compete with the big teams for the big players.

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern would be a step up, but he's not good enough for any of those sides. Monaco and PSG would match his wages and we could offer him more game time. I don't want him though.

Yeah, exactly. I would say an in-form Rooney would be good enough for Real or Bayern, but an in-form Rooney wouldn't have to bitch about not being in United's first XI.

I don't think Madrid are a step up on us at the moment, certainly not the club they were 10 years ago.

Barcelona and Bayern definitely are though.

Who would you drop in the Madrid and Bayern first team for Rooney?

In terms of personnel, Madrid are superior. If Rooney can't get in the United side on a regular basis he couldn't get in Madrid's either.

Not for long with Ronaldo coming back.
