False 9 isn't an oxymoron though.

A winger plays on the wings, a central midfielder plays in the centre.

It's impossible to be both.

But there's no other term to describe someone like Di Maria is there?

Might be an oxymoron, but I've not yet seen an alternative phrase.

Its simply an attacking midfielder...

A winger plays out wide and his main duty is to beat a man and cross the ball, so if Di Maria doesn't do this then he cannot be described as a winger anyway ffs. The term is absolute bollocks as far as i'm concerned.

I'd say an attacking midfield starts from a much higher position than Di Maria does for Madrid.

http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/12/03/introducing-the-central-winger/

Chalk boards don't work, and Di Maria starts from a deeper position than any of them.

It's just an attacking midfielder who has been given a free role and drifts around a bit more.

A central winger is a ludicrous term.

I'd say an attacking midfielder plays in a role behind the striker/strikers (or on the wing, but advanced) but whatever.

Its not so much I have a problem with the concept of the role.

Its just the fact that central winger is so obviously a piece of nonsense English.

How fucking daft is it sending negative tweets when you're in such a small bubble? (Assuming they're real of course)

Weez Keys Louize is at it again in the Guardian's pre-season preview, talking about the top 8 for Sunderland. She also calls Sunderland's defence an 'obstruction and destruction' unit, and refers to Jack Colback as 'defecting'.

btw - WKL is a horrendously biased Mackem North-East correspondent for the Guardian. Felt Poyet was MOTY last year and Borini scored the goal of the season. It was a good goal, a bit like Wilshere's against Norwich, but absolutely no where near as good.

She's not horrendously biased, she's just horrendously bad. She tipped Spurs for the title and a host of Spurs players for individual accolades last season (Paulinho as player of the season, iirc), Along with Jamie Jackson and Paul Wilson she's one of the Guardian's worst football journalists.

Jamie Jackson has a terrible reputation around United circles too, and I can't for the life of me work out why.

He's a negative cunt, sure, but he seems to have his sources and know a bit about the movements of the club.

Nobody actually seems to like him. He's dull, sycophantic and rarely ever seems to break stories - for City or United. Generally he just rehashes common rumours or reports on briefs from the club. Ogden and Ladyman can be depressingly dull/negative at times but they at least occasionally break news stories. On top of that he's not a particularly good writer. Compared to his predecessor (Daniel Taylor) he's massive step down.
