There's no point having players playing for the sake of playing if you don't have them. Those 3 (with the possible exception of Jack Cork although he's not a world beater and unlikely to improve much) just aren't good enough.

The only workable midfield England have got is something like Carrick at the base, Henderson going box to box and someone else alongside them but I doubt you're ever going to get that because you've somehow got to fit Rooney, Kane and Sturridge in up top.

They're not playing for the sake of playing - they're playing because there's no one better. If Carrick gets injured (which is 'likely' as it's an England friendly) we don't have a defensive midfielder in the squad.

It's surely about time England and their fans/media recognise that a defensive midfielder is a position just as much as an attacking midfielder is.

We wouldn't go in to a set of games without a right back, so why is it okay we do it without a defensive midfielder?

Ryan Mason just been called up to the England squad. Didn't see that coming, although he has been good this season. Doubt he'll play though.

ENGLAND’S STARTING XI v LITHUANIA ‪#‎ENGvLIT‬
1 Joe Hart, 2 Nathaniel Clyne, 3 Leighton Baines, 4 Jordan Henderson, 5 Gary Cahill, 6 Phil Jones, 7 Raheem Sterling, 8 Michael Carrick, 9 Danny Welbeck, 10 Wayne Rooney (c), 11 Fabian Delph
SUBS
12 Chris Smalling, 13 Jack Butland, 14 Theo Walcott, 15 Phil Jagielka, 16 James Milner, 17 Andros Townsend, 18 Harry Kane, 19 Ryan Mason, 20 Ross Barkley, 21 Kieran Gibbs, 22 Kyle Walker, 23 Robert Green

Kane on the bench, Hodgson can just fuck off. Sturridge would have started had he been fit though and he's been shite this season.

Always? Find another occasion then please. I also said it's a pisstake that Welbeck is playing when replying to Poe...

Though I don't mind being wrong as Welbeck has been very good so far.

In all fairness, i think he'd be slagging Kane off rather than Sturridge if he actually were, especially as he plays for Arsenal's rival club

Very good?

I was thinking he'd found his level - been comfortably awful imo.

Rooney, Sturridge, Kane, Welbeck, Austin and Ings surely has to be some of the best attacking options England has had for many years? In terms of quantity at least.

Absolutely stacked in the mid 90's.

Cole, Fowler, Collymore, Sir Les and Le Tissier barely had England careers - A bit weird we went with Owen so early in hindsight.

Hard to get excited, when you look at the midfield though. Henderson is about the only one I would think seems like an England starting player.

Carrick is good, and doesn't really need pace for the role he plays.

I think Owen just grabbed the ball and went with it after his goal against Argentina - never really looked back.

Don't forget you had Phillips too and Chris Sutton. Loads of strikers struggled to get going for England.
