How must Clyne feel? Picked in a squad and then the guy who comes in as a replacement for an injured player starts ahead of you. Would love a journalist to ask Hodgson some of these questions. How can he say he is picking players based on form and then do that. Kick in the teeth to players in the league like Shawcross aswell and others who are in good form but never selected.

Rooney again showing he is massively overrated.....Cue second half hat trick

The media love him for some reason. They won't. I'm not actually sure he's an improvement over McClaren.

It was pretty grim yeah.

At least the international break is over for now, for about a month anyway.....although the friendly away to Scotland should be alright.

Rooney alone cost Wilshere about 6 assists in the last two games.

Who are better than these players though?

Nathan Dyer is the only player I'd argue that is in good enough form to warrant selection and even then - is he even any good?

Charlie Austin maybe too.

England aren't a team that can afford to pick players on form anymore - you have to pick the best possible players regardless if they're performing for their clubs or not.

Barry > Carrick, Dyer > Walcott (going by form, Walcott's played about 10 mins in 9 months), Austin > Lambert (offer the same style, Kane might've been useful but not the same 'mould' as Lambert), anyone > Townsend.

Still no Shawcross either, which is a bit shit

But Walcott is better than Dyer?

Barry and Carrick are non entities in that squad for me - both too old and shouldn't really be playing for England. I'd rather have Barry though, you're right - we don't play with a 4-3-3 and a defensive midfielder though, so that's pointless including him as he's nowhere near mobile enough to play in a 4-4-2.

But Walcott hasn't played in 9 months, who knows if he'll even be fit enough. At least have Dyer in there as a backup.

Noble instead of Barry then, or even Cork. Rather than repeatedly trying to shoehorn Wilshere into a DM role

But these players aren't good enough, the players selected there with the exception of Austin over Lambert are the best players available for England?

England don't play with defensive midfielders ever - it's part of the reason we're so poor. People like Cork will never get a start over Henderson and Wilshere regardless of what they offer.

At this moment in time, Dyer is better than Walcott and Barry/Noble/Cork are better than Carrick regardless of playing a proper DM or not. You're saying Townsend is a better player than Dyer?

I'm saying there isn't much difference between them at all.

Walcott is better than Dyer, too. Regardless of how fit he is.

Townsend actually plays well for England in fairness.

Disappointed by the lack of Catts, AJ, Rodders and Wicks though.

And how come Barkley isn't in your list with Walcott and Carrick.

Looking at that squad shows you how low English football is right now. Players that have done nothing this season still make the squad over ones that have. Great work Roy.

I really wouldn't be surprised if we signed Shawcross in January and he went straight into the side.

TBF though, has there ever really been a period of time when England picked players based on form? It's always been the same players picked, irrespective of how they were performing for either club or country. Once upon a time there were those who wanted mainstays like Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard, A.Cole, etc dropped for lesser players who were either in better form or would provide a more balanced system.

These days the pool of quality players England has to select from is dismal, so it definitely makes more sense to base selection on form rather than reputation. Even if it does mean selecting less talented players on occasions.

In Walcott's case Hodgson pretty much said that he probably won't play (or if he does, it won't be much). If I'm not mistaken after this break the national side won't meet up again for a few months so it makes sense to get him back in amongst the squad given it's the last chance he'll get for a while. He's also one of the best attacking players we have - he's not some shit player on getting in because he plays for a big club.

Gibbs is likely to play. Good news for England cause he's not a fraud like Baines; bad news is that he'll probably get injured.

Its my birthday today, don't let me down (again) England! For the last 2 years the game nearest to my birthday has ended in a derby defeat. 2012 Spurs lost to Arsenal and 2013 England lost to Germany. Hopefully it doesn't happen again today.
