The problems small sample size, but Martial's been far more impressive than either of those so far. Sterling in particular has gaping flaws in his game. Whether he stays at that level the whole season is another question.

It's hard & too early to judge but those two breakthrough seasons were just as good so far imo. Sterling played a lead role in an unexpected title charge whereas Wilshere had an immense season (still his best about 6 years on) and looked comfortable, and arguably MOTM playing against one of the best sides of all time in Barcelona. Those were just the two I can remember, Rooney's in with a shout; Isco, Neymar, Hazard were all performing at a top level at a young age too.

I think Martial will be a great player and for me his price-tag isn't an issue. I'm not sure whether any profit will be made if he fulfils his potential but that doesn't and shouldn't matter for a club purely aiming for the League.

The problem with the claim, basically, is that its too early to tell. I think Martial's been better than most of them (although Hazard and Neymar did jump into my head), and certainly better than the ones I've seen a lot of i.e. Rooney but it is only a handful of games and statements like that have a habit of backfiring.

It's striking how well rounded his game actually is, and from the showing we've seen he looks as close to the finished article as I've ever seen a player that young. The big question mark is if he can carry it on.

Chelsea behind.

If they lose here surely questions of Mourinho have to be asked.

Well tomorrow will be a test. Although it isn't exactly hard to score against us it's easier now our best defender is out for a few weeks & Coquelin is half fit. I found Wenger's comments on Martial very strange.

Have you actually seen him play much?

Just wondering because based on what he's shown so far I don't think thats actually a very outrageous statement. It's obviously early and its hard to know if its just a patch of good form or if this is his level, but he's been incredibly good, and even in games where he hasn't scored he's caused every team we've played problems with his directness, pace, power and dribbling ability.

I can't think of many players I've seen who were already as developed as Martial is at 19. He's far further ahead in his development than Ronaldo or Rooney were at that age, for example, and probably further ahead than Messi was too. That's obviously not to say that he will be as good as any of them, players develop at different speeds, it just so happens that Martial appears to have developed a lot earlier than you might expect its not so much a reflection of his potential as the fact that he appears to be ready now.

Jose's cracking up, Jose's Jose's cracking up.

Blaming the ref for the defeat despite Southampton had two stonewall penalties denied. Losing the plot.

I'm more annoyed I didn't watch the game, thus I missed his entire interview. Raging.

Glad they got beat though.

He's lost the plot. No top team will appoint him once he gets the sack. Maybe apart from someone like Milan, it's international management time for him.

Goes on about the Falcao decision, asked about Southampton's "I don't want to comment" and walks off.

Before he was a bit of a dick, now he's just pathetic.

I haven't seen the interview but between the lines, it seems to be that he thinks he's fucked. And maybe he is. Quite something he and his team have turned to shit so quickly.

As for Newcastle, missed the game but it sounds like after the opening 35, it all fell to shit.

It wasn't that bad tbh - Newcastle should have been two up if it wasn't for another bad decision - and Man City looked like they may have fallen apart.

But after the equalizer, Man City were incredible, Aguero was absolutely clinical, he was proper world class. And yes their was three individual errors for the first three goals - But absolutely incredible exploitation by Man City. After that their tails were up and suddenly their team looked excellent again.

It was a million miles better than the horror shows of Sheffield Wednesday, Watford, West Ham and Swansea. And I'd say better than Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal as Newcastle actually looked dangerous, even if their defence was pretty ropey.
