I assumed there was checkpointing in the first, at least I remembered it that way. After like nine tries I finally made it out of the asylum, all the way to my house without being busted and met up with Zoe. As I remembered the white elephant comes to search the house. Only it's been so long I forgot where to hide. Get busted and the game starts me right back in the asylum. I said fuck that and I won't be playing that again. It's 2013, I'm too used to nice saving.

I had this feeling with it.
It's the worst one of the series imo.
I really liked the first one, warts and all, and the 2nd was amazing but it's become increasingly bloated with random shit thats got nothing interesting to it and the story was shit.
I should probably put this in Spoilers, but if you've played about 20 mins of it you know it will happen but the kills of Haytham and Charles in particular just felt so unsatisfying.

So Napoleonic Wars if they want to draw out the long 19th Century, maybe Opium Wars? Either way, they're getting very close to the stage where guns are going to have to play a huge role, bigger than AC III.
