Rio on David Moyes:

On the morning of the game everything seemed wrong. To practise our set pieces and stuff we went to a public park. It was bizarre! Local people started coming from all over to watch us and take photos and videos. It was amateurish. I mean, why not just send Bayern an email or a DVD? Footballers are creatures of habit and for as long as I can remember at United, it was a ritual that we had low-fat chips the night before a game. We loved our chips. But Moyes comes in and, after his first week, he says we can’t have chips any more. We weren’t eating badly. In fact, you’d struggle to find a more professional bunch of players than the ones at Manchester United in the summer of 2013. Moyes’s innovations mostly led to negativity and confusion.

Under Fergie, for example, before a game on a Saturday we always played a small-sided match on a small pitch on the Friday. We loved it. We’d get into the mood for the following day by expressing ourselves, having fun, trying stuff out. You got your touch right, experimented, got the feeling flowing. We’d done that for years and suddenly - again for no good reason - Moyes changed it by making us play two-touch. It was especially bad for the forwards who liked to practise their skills and shots and movements. They felt restricted. You’d come off the pitch feeling blocked, frustrated, like you hadn’t had a chance to express yourself. We complained but nothing changed. He’d slowly lost us. I didn’t enjoy playing under him. Sometimes our main tactic was the long, high, diagonal cross. It was embarrassing. Moyes’s innovations led to negativity and confusion. It was always how to stop the other side. Moyes set us up not to lose. We’d been accustomed to playing to win.

Once the chips were taken that was it!

If Van Gaal stopped them eating chips he'd be hailed as a mastermind in the media

Basically what I got from that, like the Leeds players under Revie then Clough (sort of).

If you actually read what Ferdinand says, especially the quotes like these ones:

“Sometimes our main tactic was the long, high, diagonal cross. It was embarrassing. In one home game against Fulham we had 81 crosses! I was thinking, why are we doing this? Andy Carroll doesn’t play for us!

“The whole approach was alien. Other times Moyes wanted lots of passing. He’d say: 'Today I want us to have 600 passes in the game. Last week it was only 400’. Who cares? I’d rather score five goals from 10 passes.”

As well as the stuff about setting us up negatively, and practicing set pieces in the park (!) its more than easy to see why he completely lost the dressing room. Inconsistency never works well.

But chips..

"Moyes has been gone about 20 minutes, we’re on the bikes warming up for the first training session without him and one of the lads says: “You know what? We’ve got to get onto Giggsy. We’ve got to get him to get us our fucking chips back.”

Telling anybody who is on 100k+ a week he can't have a few chips or something else they want isn't going to go down well.

Mata:

After a whole week waiting for the match I could not imagine a Sunday like this. The way back from Leicester to Manchester on the bus seemed really long.

I keep thinking about how we lost a game that was under control, but the thing is we were ahead, they equalised and when we tried to get advantage again we lost. It’s really tough to score three goals away and come back home with no points. On our way back to Manchester I was thinking about what had happened and felt so disappointed as all those that came with us to the stadium. Honestly, I feel very sorry that the weekend ended up for our fans in such a sad way.

He should have toughed it out at Chelsea that little longer. Surely would have got an extended run with the muck that Oscar was dishing up.

Maybe he would if it was not the season before the WC.. who wouldn't want to be sure he plays for the reigning champions and win it again (although looking back at it, it was all worthless )

I would feel bad if i'd lost the ball for what led to be the games winning goal after coming on as a sub.

Its weird to see how quick Rooney still is and how unwilling he now is to use that pace with the ball at his feet.

Running with the ball and without are two entirely different things. It's no surprise that he's far quicker without than with.

Acceleration is the bigger component with the ball since rarely are long distances covered in a single dribble.

I wish we could see something like his run to win the penalty against France at Euro 2004 again. (For England in a major tournament preferably).

I think we're quietly developing a pretty good squad here. Paddy McNairs been outstanding in his first two games and although he won't get games when our back settles down already looks a quality squad option. His emergence with Blacketts and Rojos more than decent start as a centre back all bodes well back there. Probably still need one but Van Gaal's preference for a left and right footer means we'll almost certainly be looking for a left footer and I can't think we'd easily find one good enough.

Valencia's performance at Central midfield was impressive too today and looks like he'll be a useful squad option there too

I've always rated him tbh. It's only really injuries that have held him back otherwise he'd comfortably be the best in the league already.

Was surprised firstly at LVG starting Valencia in there and then at how well he played.

The lack of games should keep us nice and fresh for when we play the harder games and also the Christmas/new year period.
