Whiplash is my favourite film of the last 12 months. It's measured in ever aspect, stripped down and just relies upon simply breathtaking acting performances and music. You need to see it.

Loved Whiplash. Particularly exciting as a drum player to see it filmed like a proper action sequence.

Fuck me those American Sniper wannabe emulators are fucked up.

Doesn't help when you read some of the things about the dude it's about. Sounds like a bit of a dickhead.

Of course he was. Referring to Iraqis as savages, saying killing people was fun. He was a fucking asshole.

I like the story that he picked off 30 Americans who were looting in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

I meant to go see it last week but the fucking cinema near me stopped showing it! I thought it had only just come out.

I'm desperate to watch it though so am travelling a bit further afield to go watch it next week instead. Off to see Inherent Vice tomorrow as well. Been a crazy good few weeks for movies - seen Birdman, Foxcatcher and American Sniper already this month.

The acting from the three leads is exceptional and really holds the film up. It's really, really slow-paced but it just about kept my attention for the most part, although if you're not a fan of slower movies I'd avoid it. It does a good job of making you really unsettled and uncomfortable though which is probably the point.

One of those that was very good but I'm in no rush to see it again.

Just got back from seeing Whiplash.

Absolutely incredible. Everything about it - from the acting to the pacing to the score - was immaculate. Hard to say after a first viewing but I think it'll go down as one of my all-time favourites.

JK Simmons is getting tons of praise (and rightly so) but Miles Teller was brilliant as well.

Ex Machina

Its a very interesting film tonally and atmospherically. The 3 leads certainly hold it together, and the realisation of the cyborg Ava is extremely impressive.

I need to watch it again. I spent so much of the film desperately trying to work out what was happening with the plot I perhaps didn't appreciate it as much as I should have. It's probably better to just let it wash over you and to enjoy it for what it is.

Some review I read made the point that Doc doesn't have a clue what's happening, he's also smoking pot consistently and as the film is told from his perspective, his confusion over what's happening should be felt by the audience as well.

I think it's a hard film to enjoy, tbh. It's a weird mix of olden timey slapstick comedy, and a total drug haze.
I mean, it probably is one of PTA's weakest films, but that still makes it better than most director's best.

Finally picked up Control on Bluray so gave that another watch, actually kind of scary how much Sam Riley looks like Curtis.
